Make a house out of 3,000 explosive barrels in Crysis

3:05 AM on 12.16.2007, Hamza CTZ Aziz 64 comments

     PC

Or you can make a giant tower. Or giant chairs. Basically, anything you can think of looks to be possible here.

This is just a fantastic example of how powerful the CryENGINE2 is. It's amazing to see how all of the barrels and surrounding plants react realistically as the barrels fall all over the place. What's even better is watching all the barrels explode. The player is able to look directly at everything when 50 barrels explode, but when all 3,000 are going off, he has to turn away from the explosion otherwise his system will crash.

Fine fine fine... I'll play through Crysis the moment I have a PC that can run it at full settings. You people happy now?!

The last part of that could actually pass for part of a documentary where some random runs away from a volcanic explosion... awesome. The music is suitably br00tal, too.

The graphics/video quality don't even matter really. The physics are so intensely believable. The explosions toward the end are especially stunning.

This makes me wanna get Crysis working on my computer again. It runs fine mid-spec, I've played it for a couple hours, but lately it don't seem to wanna run. Blast. now I'll be up for even later trying to get this thing to run again.

Quick heads up for the uninitiated: this is awesome alright, but it's not realtime. It's recorded by forcing the engine to properly calculate the physics for every object on every frame (by using additive time).

The actual FPS in which this is recorded may vary depending on CPU, but these videos are usually done at something around 1fps or less, then the video is sped up to the original speed.

I can't get over how strangely shiny the barrels were.
I'm of the mindset that making every single fucking thing shiny you can is a bad thing. It's one of the things I didn't like about the Doom 3 engine either (other than it ran like shit on my ATI card and didn't have any good games made in it).
Also, if you're going for realism, more than one single appearance for every single explosive barrel might be a good idea Crytek.

Such a shame you can't do that in real time. I still like Half Life 2's engine better. It's more realistic, and has much better selection of items. I bet I could do this fairly easily in Garry's Mod.

Seeing those huge towers collapse was epic. What's in those barrels anyways? Crushed hopes and dreams of children?
