Major Nelson: Next Xbox 360 dashboard will be faster photo

You want a faster Xbox 360 dashboard, right? In his latest podcast, Major Nelson dropped hints about some performance enhancements that will make the next dashboard update faster.

"The team has done some really good stuff around making performance enhancements," Nelson said. "'Performance enhancements' doesn't sound right because it sounds like we're going to give the guide a little blue pill, and we're not doing that."

The next...thing is also going to have some "cool new features," though nothing specific was mentioned: "Whatever we call it (and it's not going to be called the NNXE), but whatever the next version of the dashboard is called, it's better with a lot of very cool new features. That update will be out later this year," he said.

I'll tell you how to make it faster: get rid of the silly boot-up animation. Just make the logo appear and disappear. Gimme MS-DOS Xbox 360 version.  I'd like to just boot up, do a "/ DIR" and look at my games list.

I'm not gonna lie Dale, an MS-DOS version would be a vast improvement.

How about adding the ability to pause downloads?

That would be awesome. Then some of the XBLA downloads could include text adventures too.

I think you'll find Gsmer Limit broke it here - http://gamerlimit.com/2009/06/major-nelson-says-the-xbox-360-guide-will-be-faster/ first.

But why would CVG credit a..a...blog.

My only gripe is that it takes a while to show all of my XBLA games, but I can live with it either way. Not a huge deal.

I still miss the old dashboard. NXE is cool looking yes, but I found the blades to be WAY more functional.

the slow dashboard harder bothers me and i notice it since the beginning, but im glad there is an improvement coming.
ms-dos? think of the children who werent born in the 80s, how do you expect them to navigate without interface?

It's just C:>(program).exe nubs.

Also you mean a nongraphical interface where all these fucktards can attempt to run stuff with a command that don't exist? Well except in the graphic os.

I find the whole interface to be tediously slow, I hope this is a substantial improvement.

The whole 'NXE' thing is absolutely bloody awful. You can joke but an MS-DOS type system would be better than the piece of shit we have now.

While the NXE can be slower than the old dashboard I've actually preferred it over all. Anything's better than the XMB on my PS3 which just falls short of it's potential - if it had a few performance updates it would actually be far better (imo) than the NXE.

I don't really find NXE that slow. Then again, I'm used to XMB so that might explain it.

Well I definitely think that it could use a speed update.. but personally I just feel that there are many interface improvements that could be made all around, without it having to change too much - and then I'd be a lot happier.
Jut give me a little bit more customization please? If I could just change colors of things to suit me more... or toggle the transparency of blades stuffs and that damn giant globe that takes up the whole bottom half of the screen! I think then I'd complain a lot less.

XMB is better than NXE in every way as far as I'm concerned. For instance you can create your own themes and wall papers, for free! What a concept!!!

And it doesn't make you use stupid little cartoon people.

Couldn't they just have optimized the whole thing in the first place? Or maybe, instead of waiting until the next huge update.. just roll out a patch to fix the performance issues. It's frustrating to even turn my 360 on sometimes.

My main problem with it is the slow startup when you're not connected to XBL. News flash Microsoft: not everyone has their console hooked up to the internet 24-7. Put in a quick check for an active ethernet port and move the code along, dammit.

I remember when the NXE first came out, it felt faster than the old dashboard, but now, it is significantly slower than it used to be. It's sort of frustrating hitting the Guide Button and having to wait up to ten seconds to get the guide to come up.

My only complaint is the guide with the NXE. It does take ages to pop up now, but the rest of it seems somewhat fast. I've had issues with items taking FOREVER to load, but that may just be my connection.

It's just like Windows. Real fast on a fresh install, but slows down to a crawl after a few months.
