Magic: The Gathering Xbox LIVE Arcade title hitting June 17 photo

A fresh Magic: The Gathering game is releasing on Xbox LIVE Arcade soon.

Earlier today, Wizards of the Coast announced the downloadable title Magic: The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers would hit Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE Marketplace on June 17. The launch will accompany two events -- Game with Fame and Game with Developers -- that allow early purchasers to play the game against the studio responsible for the title as well as Magic: The Gathering (card game) champions.

Duels of the Planeswalkers was originally announced August 28 last year and it will be the first official Magic: The Gathering game since the release of Magic: The Gathering -- Battlegrounds in 2003.

According to the Duels of the Planeswalkers official Web site, the game will feature eight “unique” player decks, single and multiplayer campaigns, and ranked cooperative play.

As an added bonus, anyone who buys the game can redeem a code for an exclusive Magic: The Gathering card called the Garruk Wildspeaker Planeswalker.

The first screenshots of the game are available in the gallery below. Judging purely from the images, it appears as if Duels of the Planeswalkers is a digital version of the tabletop game -- not a bad option if you’re tired of buying cards or hanging out at the creepy shops that sell them.

Nicol Bolas is going to be such a cheap bastard in that game...

@Unangbangkay

Except this doesn't require me to purchase cards in order to play, even though you could just print the cards out for Eye of Judgement. It would be nice though, I have a bustling collection of over 3000 cards I wouldn't mind scanning in some of my killer decks but oh well this will suffice, pain in the ass to get anyone to play MTG anyways.

I can't help but think of this as a DLC money sink for new cards. Without the ability to create my own decks, this seems far less appealing to me - but conversely, I wouldn't want to pay for access to an entire set, nor would I want to continuously face other players who play whatever cards are determined to be the best in each set... So I guess this is likely to be the best solution.

Consider me interested!

I'm intrigued, since finding someone to play against IRL is difficult, especially in the UK, but I'd be disappointed if you're limited to premade decks. Half the strategy in the game is about good deck construction.

@Arttemis Because real MTG isn't a money sink at all :-P

If it's just using premade decks then it can just suck a fat one. Hell most the fun I have in the game is building a deck and seeing my well formed strategy for the deck unfold and DOMINATE...well sometimes at least. Doesn't interest me that much cause I have a good many friends I see every week that still play magic and we can just pick up and play any old time. Still nice to see it being introduced to a new audience. Without a doubt some of the most fun I've ever had playing a game.

I haven't played Magic in ages. Perhaps now would be a good time to start back up. . .

Will there be booster packs and cool shit? Because if I can't rock Volrath The Fallen this game has already failed my test.

@Dragonzingg: I never implied that the physical cards weren't money sinks...

However, if this game consists only of pre-made decks, then this would actually turn out to be far less of a money sink than any other form of the game. That's actually something I could enjoy, since I think being able to play the cards you're given is just as important as making your own decks.

I played Magic like a decade ago, never going back to that game or any collectable card game, EVAR.

As for the game itself, as long as the game provides you with every card available instead of making you buy random crappy booster packs, it might be a very great game to play, no longer will you have to visit your local hobby shop to play games with the local nerds.

I'll probably pick it up. Even with premade decks, I'm sure if the game is popular enough that we can expect more decks down the line.

Awesome I have been waiting for this a while now.
I love playing magic with my friends but im not social enough to go to the gameshop and play with people there so having it online will be great.

I haven't played MtG since college. Good thing too, because otherwise I'd have been so broke. I'm looking forward to this because I'll be able to get back into things without putting out a whole bunch of money, but I have to say I'm surprised that Wizards of the Coast haven't gone whole hog and made their regular online version of Magic available on the consoles yet.

Just so you are all aware, you can customize your own deck.. just not right away. You start off with a "starter deck" and you unlock cards through single player/coop campaign.

Then you can bring your customized deck to fight people online

hope to see you all online :)

FINALLY.

I hope the deck customization is significant, as building decks has always been my favorite part of the game. Regardless, I'm excited to play... assuming this isn't $20.

this game looks amazing...but 8 decks to futz around with does not impress. I know DLC will be huge with this, but I'm wondering how that will affect the gameplay for people who don't purchase it.

This would be interesting if it went without the microtransactions for new cards. I highly doubt it would make that awesome jump, but it would be nice.

Culdcept Saga did it right. Let me play a game for a ridiculous amount of time for cards, not throw money @ you. I don't know many people who have culdcept saga, but those who do, love it.

A friend and I were talking about an old Win 98 Magic TG game he had that was fun, and didn't have micro-trans-rape going on.

i hope this game has a robust tutorial for newbs. i tried to get into Magic in the beginning but i was a little too young and impatient to properly learn the rules. i just thought the cards looked cool as hell and even went so far as to invent my own variant (read: bastardization) of the rules just to play with my cousin. anyway, i'd love to give Magic another try without having to buy a bunch of ridiculously priced cards.

my wife was interested in learning to play. Seems like this will be a good way to do that. It would be move if you earned points in game that would let you get boosters.

Price has been announced, it's 800 MSP ($10). A fucking amazing deal if you ask me, especially since Garruk Wildspeaker normally goes for $15-$20.
