Magic: The Gathering Tactics announced photo

Wizards of the Coast and SOE are getting together to make a 3D turn-based strategy game based on the Magic: The Gathering property called Magic: The Gathering Tactics.

In an official release sent out this morning, Wizards of the Coast announced the partnership, but went general with the details. According to the release, the turn-based game features forces and spells from the popular paper game. It will also have 24-hour PVP combat, which is where we guess SOE steps into the picture.

In the grand Magic: The Gathering tradition, Wizards and SOE plan to augment the title with expansions, a tournament “environment,” a ranking system, and a bit of story. We're guessing the single-player component will explore the latter bullet point.

Magic: The Gathering Tactics is expected to hit the PC in early 2010, with a PS3 version following after.

As a still-hardcore M:TG fan, I would like to say *fap*fap*fap*

Assuming that it stays true to the core of the game and doesn't overload it with broken "new features". Don't let me down, Wizards.

DL? Or retail price? If retail, no thanks.

Color me skeptical. The only times I've ever enjoyed Magic in a non-paper format has been a regular translation of the game. Battlegrounds was absolutely unfun.

I want to be excited about this, but I know it is going to be so loaded with microtransactions I will refuse to even bother.
