Magic guys tell us what XBLA game will offer newbs photo

Magic: The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers is slated to hit Xbox LIVE Marketplace later this afternoon. If you’ve never played Magic: The Gathering before, you may be thinking twice about the 800 Microsoft Point commitment -- the Magic paper game isn’t the easy to learn. Understanding this, I asked two guys behind the XBLA title -- senior business manager Worth Wollpert and senior brand director Aaron Goolsbey -- what the game offered to newbies.

Their answer to my question revolved around two things: a visual tutorial and minor simplifications to the game itself. The developer, Stainless Games, have cut the initial two rounds of traditional Magic: The Gathering play and created a robust tutorial aimed at holding the hand of total rookies. Not bad.

“I think one of the key elements, for us, for this game versus what we’ve done in the past -- aiming stuff at new players -- is we took a different approach to the tutorial,” Wollpert told me. “We started by dropping players into game situations that are a little further along. We did away with the first couple of turns of the game that we found a bit dry.”

Hit the break for the rest of the responses.

"Obviously," Wollpert continued "necessary when you’re actually playing the game, but it’s not the most exciting part of the game. Like, you want to get to the part where you’re casting dragons and attacking and casting big spells. So we sort of did some focus testing, found out -- honestly, now that we’re looking back on it -- pretty logically, that the most fun people were having was when they were casting their bigger spells and attacking with dragons and big monsters and stuff so we kind of focused the tutorial on that and made the game engaging and fun, and sort of left the rules behind the scenes. I mean, it’s not like it ignores the rules or anything like that. It’s just that we kind of lessened on the book learning and upped the fun quotient.

Then Goolsbey chimed in: "Magic has traditionally been best learned by a friend," he told me. "Duels of the Plainswalkers is the next best thing to having a friend teach you. And, so, for us, it’s like the way that Worth’s team put together the design of this was that it walks you through the various turn steps, as well, in a graphically understandable way. It allows you to pause at certain times, and it gives you a good sense of the pacing. Additionally, they created decks for this particular game that are just fun to play. When worth was talking about the best part of Magic is casting those big spells and doing the attacks and really having a good time doing some stuff, those decks are designed to get people introduced to that right away."

One thing Wizards of the Coast have learned over the last few years is that the Magic paper game isn't accessible. They've been making strides with new decks and cooperative packs aimed at indoctrinating those without a clue. I'd imagine Duels of the Planeswalkers is a natural extension of that. Guess we'll have to see.

What do you think, newbies? Will you try it out? Sound off in our comments.

If I had an 360, I would definitely download this game. I've always liked Magic. When I was a kid, I was OBSESSED with Magic. So yeah, this game is relative to my interests.

I am picking up some MSpoints tomorrow and will buy it. I always loved the paper game, but just could not focus the money in it.

I love MTG. I have over five thousand cards. If I had a screen to hook my xbox 360 up to I'd totally buy it.

I try to keep an open mind about this stuff, but when Magic went through that huge makeover a couple years back I completely fell off the boat. I'm all for clarity and that sort of thing, but the new look feels too much like Portal for my comfort. And everybody knows Portal was for 5-year olds.

Oh, wait, we're talking about the video game. I'm holding out for a remake of the old Microprose game.

I agree with everything Dogen said, Mirodin, the first set that featured the revised card style, was the last set that I purchased any cards from and I had been playing since Ice Age. I may get this game but only if it's more like the Microprose game than MTG: Online. I don't care if I don't have every card available to me but I want enough that I can make interesting decks and I don't want to have to buy card packs. If card packs are in the plans than you can count me out.

I never got into Magic. I always played Pokemon TCG. I know all the "cool" kids played Magic(I say cool in parenthesis because you can only be so cool if you play collectible card games), but Pokemon was clearly the better game. Pokemon had Blastoise, and he allowed you to lay down as many water energies as you wanted on any of your water Pokemon on a single turn. Let's see Magic beat that.

Nintendo should put the Pokemon TCG on WiiWare. Too bad that probably won't happen because Nintendo is dumb. That would be the perfect game to play with the Wii-Mote too.

Yeah, it's more like the microprose game where you buy the game and have all the cards. I'm waiting for some review to make sure the game isn't an abortion before I buy it.

Sadly, it won't download. the Marketplace is having a weird problem that makes you unable to download any of the new games or content they released today. Sam and Max Save the World is also affected.

I am quite sad.

I will try it out at Kyle's house. I don't think I'll buy it, unless I unexpectedly fall in love with it.

I'm sure the game won't let you make illegal moves. So there is one sure fire way to get people to understand them right there. Add a tutorial in there and I'm sure most people will pick up on the basics within the first day of playing it.

Paid for the game, download won't go through at all. My best guess is it's something to do with the downtime yesterday.

I was a little afraid when you said "simplifications to the game itself" because I thought that you meant the rules had been dumbed down, which I hope is not the case. I'm not the ideal person for this article (I've been playing the game on and off since Unlimited), but I'm looking forward to giving this game a shot. Unfortunately, casting big spells and creatures has never been interesting for me. I much prefer designing decks (which I'm sure is greatly limited in this game) and concentrating on control and library/hand manipulation.

I'd give my actual opinion of the game, but I've been trying to download it without success for the last 14 hours... damn you, Microsoft!

I've never played the game, paper or otherwise, which is probably a good thing cos of my wildly addictive personality and lack of common financial sense.

Downloading now. I know it's not going to be the best thing ever, but I've been pretty excited about it nonetheless. I think I'll have a lot of fun with it (if it ever finishes downloading......stupid crappy DSL).

I stopped playing at the time of ice age, was playing for a few years prior. I even got my cards out last year to have a look whether anything was worth anything. Haha.

I have to say, I had no interest until it was released, now Im thinking about the 800 unspent MS points I have on my account. Damn you WotC.

Maybe I'll wait for a review or something.

Man I haven't played in a decade and I still remember crazy rules for things like spell effect stacks and such, game is like riding a bicycle.

so how does this work, is it like all cards for the one price? if so, I'm there. I've always hated the idea of paying for non-physical cards.
