Sony has announced that Zipper Interactive's "OMFG there are 256 people playing at once" first-person shooter, MAG, has gone gold. That's right, it's done -- the game hits North America on January 26.
More good news is that the beta, called "MAG beta 5," is launching tomorrow for everyone North America. Yes, everyone. If you have a PlayStation 3 and an Internet connection, you can simply log in to the PlayStation Network, download the beta file, and then spend the next five hours downloading updates and the actual game files. But it's worth it, because "OMFG there are 256 people playing at once."
Those in Asian territories can start playing on December 25, and the European PS Store will receive the file on January 4. The beta will run through January 10, at which point Sony expects you'll run out and pre-order the game. Right? Right.
[Thanks, Elsa!]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I mean, most companies have serious online issues for a while after launch because they weren't ready for the flood of actual players.
Maybe this tactic will help sort out any server load issues before launch.
Wut?!?! MASSIVE ACTION GAME! *explosion, guitar solo* What more could you want?
I can't take anyone who spells the 4 in Left 4 Dead 2 seriously.
I have to admit...I lol'd. :)
If it's always on I can see this quickly turning into a chaotic team killing cluster-f*ck of insanity.
(and it's a big-ass download so it's nice that they're letting us download the client in advance of the beta start).
what xzyliac said. also 'wii' is still a more retarded name than MAG.
I only "spell" the 4 when I use the acronym. Tell you the truth, I thought everyone did it that way. >.>
I also really don't care if you take me seriously, it still doesn't make MAG's title any better. It's like they were taking titles that Atari forgot to use.
I hear Uncharted was going to use the title "Adventure", but Atari got it first. :P
I was gutted when the beta ended, I've kept it installed and check it now and then. MAG is fucking off the hook, how a shooter should be, I couldn't get enough.
End of January is a long wait, but getting back in tomorrow is fucking brilliant!
Whooooooooo!

It doesn't look mindblowing, but the gameplay is A1.
Also, I've got reasonable internet speed and it downloaded in less than 20 minutes, so Sony have a bit of backbone in their servers for this one.
Also, its under New Releases > MAG
worry not my friend. That is just one opinion. Check out the beta, it's well worth the download.
If you liked Counter Strike as many original online FPS fans did, and you like the scale and complexity (talking more than just running around getting kills ehem CoD ehem) of Battlefield you will love MAG.
It's a strange thing to understand without playing it, yes it kind of naturally breaks it's self down to 8vs8 matches, but there are 256 players there and you're not stuck with your 8vs8 match. People tend to do as they're instructed as you get double XP, and if a leader is piss poor and doesn't set suitable objectives it's fairly easy to get them voted out. It sometimes get's hectic, but in a good way, it sometimes stays chilled and organized.
I think the real beauty of MAG is that you can play it however you want, you make up your own role, be it a sniping medic, or an assault/rpg troop, or the guy who keep the APC in a suitable spawn spot, whatever you want to do.
I love the way that it fells like a constant battle, with dynamically changing frontlines, spawn points and objectives.
Imagine a solid shooter experience, which puts a load of different game types into one, links them seemlessley and gives a set of squad / platoon / team leaders the choice of where to send troops and how to complete the overall objective.
Yeah, thats real great,,,I can downoad the file, but cant play it for another 2 weeks. Nice Going. I downloaded and was ready to play. Seriously, Im done with sony.
You know, so that you don't have to waste the first day of the beta downloading?
Wow, ungrateful much? What bastards giving you FREE SHIT and letting you download it in advance.
Would hate to be giving you a Christmas present,
"sure thanks yeah, but it's hardly Tshirt weather right now, when the fuck am i going to wear it? I'm done with you gran."
The game is awesome, you just have to give it some time and be patient and get into it.
