MAG goes gold, beta opening to everyone with a PS3 photo

Sony has announced that Zipper Interactive's "OMFG there are 256 people playing at once" first-person shooter, MAG, has gone gold. That's right, it's done -- the game hits North America on January 26.

More good news is that the beta, called "MAG beta 5," is launching tomorrow for everyone North America. Yes, everyone. If you have a PlayStation 3 and an Internet connection, you can simply log in to the PlayStation Network, download the beta file, and then spend the next five hours downloading updates and the actual game files. But it's worth it, because "OMFG there are 256 people playing at once."

Those in Asian territories can start playing on December 25, and the European PS Store will receive the file on January 4. The beta will run through January 10, at which point Sony expects you'll run out and pre-order the game. Right? Right.

[Thanks, Elsa!]

This is a pretty good idea for a such a massive online game.

I mean, most companies have serious online issues for a while after launch because they weren't ready for the flood of actual players.

Maybe this tactic will help sort out any server load issues before launch.

MAG still have the most retarded name in history. Doesn't help that all the screenshots look plain. I might try it when I'm not playing LFD2 though.

It's actually a very good game if everybody cooperates in your squad, I've had some pretty shitty matches because I had a crappy squad and platoon leader but I had way more good matches than bad ones (towards the end of the beta only the people who enjoyed the game were playing so it made for better matches), my only problem with this game is that I have to pay full price for a multiplayer-only game, and I don't know if that is a good investment for me (they usually cost around $80 to $90 here in Brazil).

it'd sell better if they left their potential customers in the dark.

I'm all for this! Just wanted to point out that we are no where near full digital distribution if it really will take 5 hours to download a new game that is this large. Just a thought.

Maybe beta 5 will be kinder to me than beta 4 was. I was never able to log in last time, and I tried on a daily basis for like a week before I gave up.

I'm curious about friendly fire options with this game, do they give you the option?
If it's always on I can see this quickly turning into a chaotic team killing cluster-f*ck of insanity.

Just a minor correction though... we can download the client starting tomorrow... but apparently the servers are only running from January 4th till January 10th. Not sure if that has changed. It seems like a short demo period... but it's enough to give people on the fence about the game a bit of a free test run!
(and it's a big-ass download so it's nice that they're letting us download the client in advance of the beta start).

I only "spell" the 4 when I use the acronym. Tell you the truth, I thought everyone did it that way. >.>

I also really don't care if you take me seriously, it still doesn't make MAG's title any better. It's like they were taking titles that Atari forgot to use.

I hear Uncharted was going to use the title "Adventure", but Atari got it first. :P

Amazing! So I can get back in the beta tomorrow?!?!?!

I was gutted when the beta ended, I've kept it installed and check it now and then. MAG is fucking off the hook, how a shooter should be, I couldn't get enough.

End of January is a long wait, but getting back in tomorrow is fucking brilliant!

Whooooooooo!

I really wish I had enjoyed the beta up to this point...it's still too buggy, the network code is still really twitchy, and there are too many imbalanced choke-points on the maps available. I really want this to turn out good, so the more time spent in beta, the better. Hell, I wouldn't mind a few more delays if it means a non Socom-style rollout.

I have been in the beta since phase 1 and I will have to say I am a lover of all shooters, and MAG didn't live up to my expectations of what they said the game was gonna bring to the table. I would give this game a 5/10 from beta, just the respawn massive chaos isn't really that fun unless you get lucky and actually get with a squad of people who communicate and work together which is extremely RARE.

It's definitely worth checking out. Played in the last beta, can't be arsed d/l 2.5gb for only one week of playing, but if you haven't looked at it yet, it's worth your time.

It doesn't look mindblowing, but the gameplay is A1.

Also, I've got reasonable internet speed and it downloaded in less than 20 minutes, so Sony have a bit of backbone in their servers for this one.

If what @Senger said is true, it worries me a big shooter fan was disappointed with MAG. To me it looks like a poor man's version of Battlefield. In any team-versus-team game cooperation is important. If none is present, it can really ruin a game and one's opinion of it.

Also, its under New Releases > MAG

@Rammstein

worry not my friend. That is just one opinion. Check out the beta, it's well worth the download.

If you liked Counter Strike as many original online FPS fans did, and you like the scale and complexity (talking more than just running around getting kills ehem CoD ehem) of Battlefield you will love MAG.

It's a strange thing to understand without playing it, yes it kind of naturally breaks it's self down to 8vs8 matches, but there are 256 players there and you're not stuck with your 8vs8 match. People tend to do as they're instructed as you get double XP, and if a leader is piss poor and doesn't set suitable objectives it's fairly easy to get them voted out. It sometimes get's hectic, but in a good way, it sometimes stays chilled and organized.

I think the real beauty of MAG is that you can play it however you want, you make up your own role, be it a sniping medic, or an assault/rpg troop, or the guy who keep the APC in a suitable spawn spot, whatever you want to do.

I love the way that it fells like a constant battle, with dynamically changing frontlines, spawn points and objectives.

Imagine a solid shooter experience, which puts a load of different game types into one, links them seemlessley and gives a set of squad / platoon / team leaders the choice of where to send troops and how to complete the overall objective.

@mizzougrad01 - Wow, you're done with Sony because they let you download a FREE BETA client in advance of the actual beta starting?

You know, so that you don't have to waste the first day of the beta downloading?

Wow, ungrateful much? What bastards giving you FREE SHIT and letting you download it in advance.

Would hate to be giving you a Christmas present,

"sure thanks yeah, but it's hardly Tshirt weather right now, when the fuck am i going to wear it? I'm done with you gran."

Stop complaining about servers. Open beta = stress testing servers = server issues galore.

The game is awesome, you just have to give it some time and be patient and get into it.
