Made up game box art is better than Easter photo

I have to be quick about this. The Easter Bunny has me pinned down behind a crate of chocolate eggs. Who knew he'd be so well armed? Thankfully while he's lobbing grenades around me I have these fantastic game covers to look at. The friendly people of at the NeoGAF forums have started "The GAF Collection," a bunch of photoshopped box art in the vein of the Criterion Collection.

If these were real it would sell games faster than the Easter Bunny runs from my chainsaw attacks of death. I can't tell you how many times I've stared at the box of an insanely expensive Criterion Collection DVD, basically thinking it was worth it just for the box art. I'd pick up plenty of games again if they looked this good. Must buys would definitely include Killer 7, Zelda, Katamari, Shadow of the Colossus, Pikimin, Dr. Mario, Ico, Another World and Rez. Those are just from the first three pages! It's pretty awesome in general. Crap, you have to see this BioShock one as well.

OK, time to make my move. It's just you and me now, Easter Bunny.

What's stopping us from resizing them and actually using them on glossy paper? I'd consider replacing the killer7 and SotC ones if I had a high quality printer ATM.

I really love that Bioshock one, I just wish it was in full print size rather than slightly larger than my iPod's album art display.

Why you hatin on the Big Bunny Matt? All he wants to do is spread his shit filled (but delicious) eggs throughout the world. Do you know how much work the Easter Bunny has to go to provide eggs to everyone in the world? He has to shit tens of billions of shit shaped eggs every year just so every child and adult can enjoy Easter. That's alot of shit! How much shit can you produce in a year?!

*whistles* A few of those would make perfect covers for... I dunno, the novelizations of their respective games, I guess?

Lots of good stuff there. It always bothers me how bad American box art is. Movies have it worse though.

That is amazing, Criterion make the best type of box-art already and this in game form is even better :)

this forum is nice, but VGBoxart is probably the most comprehensive list around.

Something Awful had a photoshop thing not long ago in a similar vein where most used the idea of what book covers would look like for games

That header image immediately made me think of Killer 7. Well done, whoever made it.

No box art can capture the frustration of trying to shoot an invisible, giggling target. Killer7 = not a fan.

This. This is what perfect box art looks like.

Since when has our bunny friend been so violent?

Toward the topic, I don't recall the Katamari Prince having an antenna resembling that of a television. Then again, I haven't played the game in ages. Pikmin is scary, just seeing all of those little eyes staring at me... The Bioshock is brilliant just because it is so simple yet it manages to tell exactly what happens in the beginning of the game.

Everything else was awesome as well but doesn't manage to stick out as much as the SotC one.

These are fantastic. I really bemoan the fact that video games generally have such terrible box art. DMV and I looked at all the games we had in the room, and the only covers we were FFXII Collector's, Bioshock Collector's, Halo 2 Collector's, WarioWare Touched, Dead Space, Madworld, Katamari Damacy, and the Grand Theft Auto and Metal Gear Solid covers. Everything else just looks...so meh. It's a shame that so many games have poor art, and I hope the increasing frequency of threads devoted to more artistic covers inspires game publishers to put some more effort into their packaging.

At least we're only subjected to a few absolute travesties like the cover for The Orange Box in a given year.

The Killer 7 one is cool but I think most of these quite underwhelming, if not a bit rubbish. Maybe I've just been spoiled by the Something Awful ones (see comradetrotskii's comment).
