Madden 10 is loaded with micro-transactions photo

While Bethesda may have backed off after horse armor, Electronic Arts continues to keep micro-transactions at the forefront of its downloadable content strategies. The latest title supported by a bunch of ticky-tacky DLC is Madden 10.

A YouTube video has surfaced displaying the megaton of content that will be offered when the game hits retail in a few days. Most of it only affects Franchise Mode. You can download advanced trainers, staff, and scouts as well as a plethora of game-breakers such as temporary boosts to player and coaching statistics.

It may sound like overload, and it is in many ways it is, but don’t fret too much: these micro-downloadables aren’t malicious. As far as we can tell, EA isn’t selling modes or other frill content players are accustomed to receiving with the purchase of a core Madden game.

The one offensive scrap of optional content we’ve spotted is something called “Elite Status.” IGN covered the content (400 Microsoft Points) moons ago. It’s a download geared towards good players, adding a harder difficulty setting and special online lobbies just for them.

Madden 10 will be a success -- there’s no doubt about it. But we wonder how these micro-transactions (whatever the price) will sit with NFL-starved consumers. Guess we’ll to wait and see.

I ... I think I'm tapping out.

I was most looking forward to franchise mode, but putting really tempting stuff, like "Not Done Yet" is a freaking sucker punch. Hell yeah I want the perk, and I can afford a micro transaction, but I find the offer kinda of offensive...

Can i earn these thing through something dumb in game like Madden Cards?

heh. Maybe I should just find my madden 06 disc and get my franchise on...

bleh.

They're doing it wrong. And you got it all backwards. Don't give players advantages like stat boosts for extra money... stuff like that kills the game for competitive players. How about things like downloadable rosters and such to extend the longevity of the game so they don't have to release a new Madden every year?

I solemnly vow to never buy stuff that would normally be included with the game. The minute we open that door devs will start excluding things from the game so that we can pay for them again later on. I know that sounds alarmist, but just you wait...

Wow…I am actually not upset to see this. They run the risk of narrowing their audience from NFL enthusiast s to a more niche group of just Madden diehards. Their exclusive rights run-out this year, I believe, and with this significant misstep of blatant greed….we may get a NFL 2k 11. I am curious to see the reaction of this with non-Madden football fans who have simply had no “other” game to buy for the past 5 years.

I've got no problem at all with them adding in the micro-transactions for the casual gamer with some cash to blow -- the hardcore gamer looking for realism can simply ignore the option.

Buy this spending money to unlock the "elite status" thing is a terrible precedent. They are essentially charging you a tax for being good at the game. Those are the gamers they need to be embracing, not the ones that should be nickled and dimed.

Madden 9 had the WORST menu system I have ever come across. Trading it in for RE5 was the smartest movie I have made on my 360. The assumption that the menu system coupled with microtransactions for Madden 10 is a no brainer.

@ Maddenhq

I would normally agree that micro transactions suck, but something like elite status is a good idea for the "hardcore" Madden fans. It's a little extra money that they can all afford to go into a special room where they wont be bothered by us "normal" people or our "ten year old brothers" while searching for matches. One could argue that we could buy it too, but only a few dinks would actually do that, it basically isolates them mostly.

well that's what I "think" at least.

@Casket What do you mean that's exactly what they are doing. Lots of games do that already.

Wow. I can't believe the Stockholm Syndrome that has set in. It's egregious enough that EA rolls out the same game every year at full price, but to charge for any bit of progress they make feature-wise? Progress that 2K5 had in some cases, oh, five years ago - a $20 game btw. And now people are defending it? Online franchise, difficulty modes, medical staff??

How does Peter Moore look himself in the mirror knowing that he rapes sheep...err...Maddenistas so? Oh, I know....he justifies it the same way Mick Jagger did to a reporter, once, when asked why he sleeps with 20 year old girls even though he's triple their age, saying, "because I can". Fair enough, enjoy the game, all...I'll be skipping it.

Aside that madden suck's and nobody cares about the game except the casual american player , i never buy or would buy a micro transaction in a game it just sucks and is a big downer to buy a game and see you only get some extra stuff to pay more.

this is the first Madden game i've bought in 5 years, so it doesnt bother me. If you dont like them charging for the same game every year, just dont buy it. All the DLC they are charging for here is stuff that doesn't really matter anyways, and if it does, you're not going to care about spending a couple of dollars on it.
