Shortly after I brought home a copy of Capcom’s Street Fighter IV, I realized I made a huge mistake. The mistake wasn’t the game -- I think it’s the cat’s ass -- it was neglecting to pre-order Mad Catz’s lauded Tournament Edition Arcade FightStick. I assumed that my wicked controller skills would translate to success. They haven’t. I’ve discovered that I desperately need the edge that a good joystick provides.
It’s no secret that MadCatz’s TE FightStick shipped in an extremely limited quantity. However, it’s also no secret that Mad Catz are shipping more in April. Despite knowing that it won’t be available for a while, I still find myself checking every retailer where the joystick is listed just in case a shipment comes in early. One of the retailers I haunt is Amazon. They’ve yet to restock their supply, and authorized sellers have taken the opportunity to sell the stick at a greatly inflated price.
Over the last week I’ve watched four of Mad Catz’s plastic diamonds sell for over 420 dollars -- 270 dollars above the retail price. Today, I noticed that another overpriced FightStick had appeared. This time, the seller wants an astounding 1,000 bucks for his Xbox 360 FightStick.
When I talked to Mad Catz global communications manager Alex Verrey about FightStick availability, he gave me a statement that advised potential consumers to avoid bloated eBay prices. At the time, the rate was roughly between 250-400 dollars. This new Amazon FightStick seller is asking for way more cash.
I happen to find this funny, but also sad. Do you guys think the one-grand FightStick will sell? I have a hunch that this puppy will be gone by the end of the week. I'm told that Ken's Shoryuken is much easier to pull off with a joystick.
[Update: Christ, that was fast. It has either been purchased or pulled.]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Wait, PS3? Okay, that's retarded when other options are available.
That's $193 US DOLLARS to you!
I think there is an internet conspiracy to use this number when ever it comes to using this number. Not accusing anyone of anything, just pointing it out.
Assuming this isn't a joke about the huge amount of Ken players, I have some advice... for I am also limited to a controller.
Using the analog stick is easiest for me. I just push it right, then while holding as right as it can go, I wiggle the stick down and then up very quickly while keeping it pushed as right as it can go the whole time, obviously followed by a punch.
The shoryuken movement is cake that way.
Fry's Electronics has a dual x-arcade stick for $119.99. It has 2 sticks on it, perfect for extended grudge matches. man it would be fun to play MK II with that thing. =D Damn it's not compatible with Xbox.. hmmm. Maybe there's another out there...
Many of my co-workers and friends pre-ordered this thing only to get screwed.
(I'm not the expert though. I pre-ordered the fightpad cause it looked cool. I'm really happy with my purchase )
Though I feel you with the Xbox d-pad, dude. Mine reads left and right when I press up or down.. =( I couldn't imagine doing Street Fighter "hadoken" and "Dragon punch" moves with the xbox controller.. let alone some of the moves that were in Castlevania: SotN. >_<
Oh wow, I forgot all about X-Arcade! Shame that the 360 is the system I need the stick for, and it's like the only system their sticks don't work for. :(
But it's not just MadCatz sticks; the fighting pads and the Hori sticks have all jumped in price. Capitalism at its finest I guess. I feel lucky I got my Hori Pro stick in store at MSRP lol.
seeing you could probably have got someone to make you a stick for much cheaper and be just as good or better than the TE sticks.
It is VERY surprisingly awesome and has been getting good reviews accross the board. All six buttons up front and a great d-pad to boot.
And $40 is a helluva lot cheaper than any deal you'll ever get on that stick.
