Mad Catz paid $300K to miss out on Guitar Hero's success photo

Oh, Mad Catz. Does your ignominy know no bounds? The accessory manufacturer, whose name has long been synonymous among gamers with inferior peripherals -- sturdy FightSticks aside -- recently admitted to a decision that looks rather silly in hindsight. Darren Richardson, the company’s president and CEO, told Kotaku that Mad Catz could’ve been a part of the Guitar Hero phenomenon from the start: it was set to make an Xbox version (or presumably, its guitar controller) of the original game, which launched exclusively on the PlayStation 2 in November 2005.

However, due to a legal battle with Konami (whose GuitarFreaks games directly inspired Guitar Hero), Mad Catz paid $300,000 to extract itself from the contract. That left Harmonix and RedOctane to jointly develop the PS2 game that would go on to sell over 1.5 million copies and spawn a sequel that moved nearly twice as many units. Of course, this all happened before Activision acquired RedOctane and the Guitar Hero name, while Viacom bought Harmonix, who then created Rock Band.

“Everyone else made hundreds of millions and we paid money to not be a part of it,” lamented Richardson. Indeed, Activision and Neversoft are swimming in money vaults, Scrooge McDuck-style, while Mad Catz keeps pumping out awesome-looking arcade sticks. But then, don’t feel too sorry for Mad Catz -- they’ve made a nice business out of producing Rock Band peripherals, like this crazy $299.99 wooden Fender guitar controller.

So there was an Xbox version of Guitar Hero! The rumors are confirmed! Not that anybody but me cares.

Anyways sucks for MadCatz although I quite like RedOctane's peripherals. Now maybe if they had done the Rock Band peripherals instead of EA I wouldn't have two busted RB1 guitars and a near busted RB1 drum in my closet.

I thought Frequency and Amplitude (also made by Harmonix) were the basis for Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

It's a pretty healthy combination of the two.

At least they ducked all manner of legal nightmares and ridicule from major names in the music industry by having nothing to do with these games.

That's just painful to admit.

Hmm... takes guts admitting a mistake that huge. And with the quality of their fightsticks (damn do I love my SF4 TE), they are starting to slowly earn my trust after years of shoddy products.

God, that's painful to read. I hate all the music games form Activision and Harmonix, and even I wouldn't have passed up all that success and money.

And wow, that headliner pic of the Vader kid is... I never thought I could be so depressed from looking at a picture. I don't know what it is about it, maybe the GBA SP just sitting there, or the little ketchup cup also... just sitting there. It's like the kid's dad went to go get him some french fries, and never returned o.o I feel more sorry for that kid than I've ever felt for any human being in the history of the universe.

Isn't GitarooMan the basis for Guitar Hero? Anyways, sucks for MadCatz but as previously stated, their new peripherals are a good start to regaining many gamers' trust. I <3 My SFIV TE Fight Stick, SE Stick, Fightpad and I'm in the market for a new headset and have been reading glowing reviews about their Modern Warfare 2 throat-communicator.

For Madcats, a company that sells dance pads and the like, ducking out when Konami got legal was probably a sound move at the time. Having played the Wii dance game made by Madcats, I'd have to say if they were doing the whole dealy Xbox might have been better off.

Well if my kid had a face like that, I'd leave him at a motorway service station as well.

Poor old Crazy Catz, I've never bought one of their products, but I might do just out of pity.

@The Silent Protagonist + Xzyliac

uh ever heard of PARAPPA THE RAPPER, BEATMANIA or DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION??

konami were doing rhythm games before harmonix were doing pretty much anything at all. guitar hero is beatmania with a plastic guitar instead of a plastic turntable.

i can't help but post when people accuse GH of being original, but it's extra irritating to see it this time. sooner or later some idiot is going to suggest that beatmania is a DJ hero rip off, and my head is going to explode.
