Mad Catz: Microsoft won't block our Wireless N adapter photo

While Mad Catz' wireless N adapter may not be as sleek as the official Microsoft device, it has a few good things going for it. Namely, its price -- $79.99 compared to Microsoft's $100 asking price -- and the fact that it works with both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The cheaper MSRP has caused people to speculate that Microsoft may react negatively, similar to the situation with unauthorized memory units from Datel. Eurogamer spoke with Mad Catz' Alex Verrey, who says this is not going to be the case.

"They can't lock it out and nor would they want to," he says. Because the wireless adapter plugs into consoles via an Ethernet port, "both consoles pick it up as a wired connection."

"Microsoft is a licensee of ours," Verrey continues. "We would never ever do anything to put Microsoft's nose out of joint as it were, and we would never look to battle against them in any way by producing a cheap knock-off product."

This is the part where you leave mean comments based on that last line.

Allegedly, everything I've ever thought about MadCatz business strategy has been completely wrong.

WAR is so sickeningly amazing.

Too bad their singer is kind of a douchebag.

I owned a Belkin knock-off similar to this (wireless G) and it was pretty mediocre. The disc that came with it to customize the settings via PC didn't work, so I went ahead and paid MS the $100 for the wireless adapter.

...Verrey then wiped the poo off his lips and went back behind the curtain to continue satisfying his Microsoft handlers.

"#Adult Unicorns, Sex With"

This is indisputably the best tag ever put on anything anywhere on the internet.

Wait, for PS3 too?

My question to that would be, why if it already has built in WiFi?

@Fission Mailed This adapter supposedly gives faster speeds than the internal PS3 one or the old Microsoft wireless adapter. The main selling point for me is that I could switch it between systems.

Wireless N boasts greater range and faster speed, but you also need an N router. No console has wireless N built in (yet) so that's why it also work for PS3. If you buy an N router, your old b/g things connected to the network will still function as they always had, but they will not benefit from the increased speed of wireless N. Another draw is that you can wirelessly stream 1080p video from PC to your console thanks to the increase in speed.

"...it works with both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3."

Make that "anything with an Ethernet port." It's just a wireless bridge.

So the reason that this is $80 is because they had to brand it for console gamers. Why not just sell a cheap, $40 wireless bridge (which it is) and say "Works with Consoles (360, PS3)" on the box? You'd save us even more money.

Now for the real question: Why would i pay $80 for a wireless bridge? There are cheaper allternatives or/and you could do like me and use a thing called "ethernet cable" which most ppl seems to have forgotten all about...

Its not even going to get the speeds that N draft can deliver because it is limited to the xbox 360's Ethernet port which is 100Mbit.

Disregard the last post, I apparently didn't see the box at first. Anyway, I didn't want to pay the outrageous $100 fee for the Microsoft adapter, since I just dropped $300 on an Elite Holiday bundle, but thanks to some Reward Zone coupons I had stocked up, I picked this up for $50 plus tax.
