M.I.A says videogames teach kids to be violent photo

I've never heard of M.I.A before, but this story makes her sound like a silly person. She's some singer/political activist and she believes that violent videogames are teaching children to be violent and preparing them to go to war. She even said that, having seen real violence herself in Sri Lanka, she doesn't know whether her experiences are worse than these videogames or not. Seriously.

"I don't know which is worse. The fact that I saw it in my life has maybe given me lots of issues, but there's a whole generation of American kids seeing violence on their computer screens and then getting shipped off to Afghanistan," she claims. "They feel like they know the violence when they don't. Not having a proper understanding of violence, especially what it's like on the receiving end of it, just makes you interpret it wrong and makes inflicting violence easier."

Funny that she mentioned Afghanistan. By all accounts, there are some pretty violent bastards out in the Middle East, many of them very young males, and something tells me they didn't get their tendencies from videogames. I should think somebody claiming to have firsthand experience of violence would have the maturity to realize that videogames have never been needed to encourage inhumanity, and that it's something unfortunately hardwired into our basic evolutionary nature. Of course, it's just quicker to say that videogames are doing it, isn't it?

Blaming a media source for violence is an easy ticket. It's intellectually lazy to do so, and you'd think we could expect more from a political activist who has had traumatic experiences herself. Apparently this M.I.A character would rather keep that easy ticket though. Shame.

Red headed children being herded into a minefield and having their heads blown off by pistol wielding guards. This was in MIA's last video and she says that video games are a problem...?

A bad case of foot in mouth disease methinks.

I squeel with glee while chainsawing aliens in half... but yesterday *sniff*. The vet had to dock (cut off) my 4 day year old puppy's tail and remove its claws. To say the least, I wept like a bitch from when I heard it cry. Chainsawing all of the aliens in the world would not have dulled that experience.

She's a total fuckwit. She just got reamed in the NYT's Magazine about a month ago and then like a petulant child, she tweeted the journalists phone number so all her fans would call and harrass the writer. She's a spoiled, idiot princess. BLECH!

Dammit...and she makes such good music too, aside from Paper Planes. Sucks that a person with such driving beats and catchy (But sometimes incomprehensible) lyrics has such a stupidly narrow world view. Especially considering how overwhelmingly violent and vulgar her own brand of entertainment is. Pot, kettle, black, yada yada.

So its not OK for a video game to be violent, but in one of her own music videos it is OK to gather children and either shoot them or make them run through a mine field. Yay, another person who think double standards are the way to go.

I don't think she is saying that "video games teach kids to be violent." Seems to me she is saying the opposite. She is saying that video games are portraying violence, but doesn't give children a "proper understanding" of it. So in that respect, I think she is right. How many suburbanite kids fully understand the consequences of violence?

I'm mostly amazed that people were able to put violence in movies, games, television, and music even though we had no concept of violence until after those things existed. It's almost as if the entertainment industry is influenced by people and not the other way around. That couldn't be the case, because that would make someone like M.I.A. look like a moron.

Didn't she do that song about fake passports and "I just want to bang bang bang and take your money!" The bangs accompanied by gunshots?

Also, by I just want to bang bang bang, I don't mean the fucking amazing song by GroupX.

This hypocritical whore can blow me....

...up.

Yeah, i went there.

In other news, I'm half Sri-Lankan, never been, but it's hardly been a nice place to go for the last few decades, my family left as the shit kicked off. - maybe when the shit settles.

Love how they go on about how video games make kids violent, when we have the lowest youth-violence rates in 20 years, in 1993 there were 3,284 incidents of youth homocide/violence, and that number drops as videogames became more prevelant, dropping continuously throughout the 90s untill 2000 when the rate more or less holds still between 900-1000 cases per year for the rest of the decade...

More violent games = less real world violence anyone?

You all just got trolled by Sterling.

She never said that video games cause violence, just that they only see it from their own perspective and don't think of the victims. Not once in that quote did I see her putting the blame of violence on games or anything else.

Seems to be the norm with this site to post bullshit headers just to get more views, sort it out.

Everyone pays attention to the violence video games cause, but why doesn't anyone pay heed to the problems caused by Pokemon Cards. Or Furbies. Or RPGs. Or Rock-and-roll. Or television. Or books. Or [some other shitty scapegoat here].

The REAL question is, "What will shitty parents blame violence on next?"

Yes, she said 'making inflicting violence easier'. Not 'teaches your kids to kill'. Meaning it plays the part of people having a misguided idea of violence from video games to real life. She saying how it desensitizes people and makes it 'easier' for people to kill/to be killed because kids interpret the idea of violence wrong.

But either way, you could say this about all entertainment. I just don't think what she is saying is as bad is it's made out to be.

@Turd Burglin Chodeo Clown: Which is true... In videogames and any other media.
But some people confuse "makes inflicting violence easier", with "makes inflicting violence desireable". It is one thing to say it makes violence easier to cope than to say it makes violence more attractive.

Same mistake is made by Jack Thompson, don't you fall into that.

Violent video games were featured on Penn & Teller's Bullshit. Not only do they not cause violence, they don't even make it easier to commit real violence later. The ability to separate fantasy and reality is something we learn very early on, and it's something that kids are good at. There is NO link between fantasy violence and real violence.

But who cares what some nobody blames the ails of society for?

@ gore on the floor OK pally, let's scope out that whole sentence, then [scoping in progress] yup, she's saying that violent video games make you misinterpret violence (a statement that makes less sense ever time I try to decipher its meaning) and makes you more capable of committing it. In closing: get off mah nuts.

I see two arguments: "Video games cause violence" vs "video games make inflicting violence easier". Just because she's not saying the former, it doesn't give the latter any more merit. They're BOTH worthless statements that aren't grounded in anything resembling real science.
