Lucky Japanese kids get Super Famicom controller for Wii Virtual Console photo

By all rights, our resident teddy bear Aaron Linde should be the one posting this story, as this tip came in last night and he quickly claimed it. Always the skeptic, I told him to hold off because we were uncertain of whether it was true, and as it turns out, it is.

Starting in April, Japanese members of Club Nintendo wil be able to trade their club points for for a new Wii controller that looks to be an exact replica of a Super Famicom controller. Now anyone who wasn't a fan of the Wii Classic Controller can keep it real with their Virtual Console games while the rest of us scour the internet in search of one for ourselves.

No plans have been announced to bring this to the rest of the world, (of course,) but that never stopped me or Niero from getting our hands on the best in gaming, and it shouldn't stop you, either. Although when these start hitting eBay, you will have to fight us for them.

That's it I'm boycotting Nintendo and Nintendo games until we get a Club Nintendo in the US.

Club Nintendo gets all kinds of cool shit in Japan. The US one gets like hats and shirts.

God, the SNES/Super Famicom controllers are so timeless...

I'd really like to have one of these for my Super NES VC games, but since Nintendo of America never feels generous I guess I'll just Ebay it. Hopefully a deluge of the Super Famicom Controllers will keep the price reasonable!

What does it plug into? The Wiimote, just as the Classic does?

If not consider me unimpressed. I still have my GCN Hori controller that is basically the exact same thing, the only bitch I can lobby against it is that it only works through the GCN controller ports and most VC games are not "optimized" for the GCN controller, leading to some terrible button layouts...

I was trying to cross them. Apparently I'm not so good at that. Either way, blame Hamza for that picture, I took it months ago to make fun of him for something and he insisted I use it.

Again, I lament the lack of Club Nintendo in America...

I guess we got that Zelda stylus... That was kinda cool. Sorta.

That controller brings back memories. I remember spending hours playing super mario world. Those later star were soooo hard. I can’t count how many times I died, but I keep playing because I just had to beat it. So many hours lost, good times.

Man, cool stuff. The Star Catalogue over here has always sucked. Ringtones and Wallpapers?! Awesome. Occasionally there would be a game or something on there but even that is scarce and you still can't buy VC games with your stars. What a jip.

Just hope that if it comes to the US you don't get those ugly purple buttons. Blergh.

I've seen this al over the net today, but not one pick of the connection. Does it plug into the Wiimote for wireless play, or does it plug into thw Gamecube controller ports?

Now if they got a PS2 controller, they'll be playing with power.

Seriously though, SNES controllers are like the next best thing!

@ Rimbaud:

"...the only bitch I can lobby against it is that it only works through the GCN controller ports and most VC games are not "optimized" for the GCN controller, leading to some terrible button layouts..."

That is one of the most ridiculous things about the VC. Why couldn't Nintendo have implemented a 'Control Customizer' for each game? Playing some games with the GC controller is way too difficult due to Nintendo's horrible preset layouts. I know that they are trying to push people to the Classic Controller, but the methods that they have employed thus far have been embarrassing!

Not bad, but there is another method for this already (assuming it plugs in the GCN ports):

Yeah, the reason I have a classic controller is because my Gamecube Hori retro controller is mostly okay, but the occasional game like F-Zero is unplayable with the buttons configured the way they are. So because I like the SNES controller better, I'll probably be importing one of these.

I see only one flaw with this controller (as good as the console was)... it is so hard to pull off a strong dragon punch or fireball in SFII since the strong punch button (which happens to be 'L') is in close proximity to the D-pad.

"An interview with Perrin Kaplan asks why there is no Club Nintendo in the US, she replies that area of the US is much larger than all the other Club Nintendo countries and that the cost-wise it would be very expensive. Kaplan also said the pre-order bonuses and game registration promos are an alternative for Club Nintendo."

Well, I have Club Nintendo in the UK, but all you get is crap like ringtones and wallpapers. They promised us free Wii Points (but AS ALWAYS Japan gets it) and we haven't seen a single point for grabs.

Game and Watch collection for DS goes for loads of money on ebay, approximately GBP£40.25, but if they had sold it (online or something?) they could have made big $$. I don't think Nintendo thinks outside the box - that box being Japan.
