LucasArts partners with Steam for retro adventure revival photo

If you're a fan of LucasArts' classic PC adventure games, you've probably already rapid-fire F5'd your way into the light on this one, but if not, here's what all the fuss was about yesterday. LucasArts has announced via their Twitter that they've partnered with Steam to bring the company's back catalog of adventure games to the digital service for your point-and-click pleasure.

Among the titles already slated for arrival are Loom, The Dig, Battlefront 2, and the Special Edition Monkey Island that's also coming to XBLA. They're scheduled to start hitting Steam on July 8th, and have reportedly undergone testing to ensure that they'll run in Windows Vista or XP with minimal system requirements and on an array of hardware.

Now that the cat's out of the bag, details are raining down faster than I could ever put them here, so if this has you bouncing around with excitement, you might just want to head over and watch the tweetstorm as it happens. Hooray?

OMG I'm such a fan of Lucasarts games I'd just LOVE to buy them all again rather than play my original copies in ScumVM ;)

It's a great start and I'm hopeful more are coming soon. Getting Grim Fandango to work on Vista would be awesome.

Hooray? Hooray indeed!

They chose Steam over GOG.com? Why?

Oh well, Loom sounds like a good deal...

...

Still think it would have been much better with GOG, their fans have been waiting longer there for that.

YES! I remember back in the day when I tried to pick these up used and they wouldn't run on Windows 2000... great news!

Yeah, I'd buy Grim Fandango again.

The little Manny Calvera skeleton toy that came in the box still sits beside my computer monitor to this day. That guy has outlasted Star Wars droid figures, lego constructs, pics of a girlfriend, several little stone gargoyles, and even my Big Daddy fig.

Considering these games have been running beautifully in ScummVM for years, I would hope there's no trouble. Grim Fandango is a trickier beast and I would gladly throw money at them until it ran in Vista. I guess what I'm trying to say is: If LucasArts and Steam can give me Grim Fandango again, I will make it rain on dem hos!.

Seriously, I hope this spurs a "real" revival, as in new games that are as awesome as those ones were. greatest streak of excellence in the history of gaming.

Holy shit, this is just awesome news, I'm really pleasantly shocked.

I hope this stuff sells like hotcakes and Lucasarts realise what they've been squandering all these years.

HarassmentPanda: In an interview with Joystiq, Darrell Rodriguez, Lucasart's CEO says that there is the potential for games like Maniac Mansion, DOTT and Grim Fandango to get the special edition treatment if Monkey Island sells well enough.

Hi Def Grim fandango? everyone needs to buy 10 copies of Monkey Island SE, although nothing will quite beat the first time I played through it and switching through those 4 CDs.

I hope these games still run on the SCUMM engine so I can play them on my mac. Otherwise, looks like I'll be using Boot Camp. :(

Getting Grim Fandango to run on a multi-core PC is a trick and a half, even with XP installed. Last time i had it working was when I was running a Pentium 4. Even then, I had to disable hyper-threading to get it to run with sound. I would love to buy a copy of that game and discover some of the adventures that slipped through my young fingers while I was hip deep in Monkey Island.

Why not making sequels? I mean: Sam & Max, Monkey Island, why not Grim Fandango 2? I've been waiting patiently 10 years for it, I beg LucasArts to make it real now that Adventure games are coming back to life.

I'm glad for others but since I own almost all the old Lucasarts games and ScummVM works great this isn't as exciting as I'd hoped. Now when they release Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders onto steam then I'll pee my pants.

Adventure games were cool back then, but are they still fun right now? I hope these new revival games that LucasArts has planned isn't a clickfest and take everything that isn't nailed down, like in the past.
