LucasArts not planning to update more Monkey Island games photo

LucasArts doesn’t plan to continue updating games in the Monkey Island franchise; but critical and financial success could sow the seeds for a continuation.

We recently spoke with Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition producer Craig Derrick via e-mail. In the interview, he voiced a deep appreciation of Monkey Island and a desire to continue updating the LucasArts classic series. Derrick supposed that an update to LeChuck’s Revenge hinges on three factors: sales, reaction, and attraction.

“I think LeChuck's Revenge would be awesome to revisit, but at this time we have no plans for future updates,” Derrick said.

“It all comes down to whether people like what we've done with the Special Edition and see the potential for future projects,” he added in a later question. “Sales are definitely an important measurement of this, but so is fan and critical reaction to the game.”

“The fans have been asking for this for a long time and I hope we're giving them a great new experience that complements their memories of playing the original game, but I also hope we attract an all new generation of gamers that have only heard about Monkey Island or point-and-click adventure games, but have never played them," he added. "If both parties show up, enjoy the game and want to see more then I think we'll be on the right path to not only do more updates, but all new adventures.”

Speaking of new adventures, Monkey Island fans will soon be able to enjoy Telltale Games’ Tales of Monkey Island episodic series. The first episode, "Launch of the Screaming Narwhal," will be available on the PC on July 7. LucasArts’ The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition will be available later this summer.

Who wants to bet now that LucasArts FINALLY STOPS remaking their series to death some people will still complain that they won't get to play more >_>

Can't LucasArts hire DoubleFine to make the Monkey Island's without looking like shit?

At least a remake of Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango or Full Throttle.

I hope they do. I have been really impressed with the screenshots and footage, they have been very faithful to the original and id love to see more classic lucasarts games redone like this.

This is the GREATEST PR spin of all time. Every company needs to learn to do this.

"We won't milk this franchise and piss you off, BUT IF YOU WANT IT, we will deliver, because we love our fans!!!! <3 <3 <3"

I really can't imagine why they wouldn't keep rereleasing SCUMM games. Heck, Curse of Monkey Island looks nicer than most current games as-is. DotT, Sam and Max and Full Throttle have great voice acting already.

I agree with Monodi though, I really don't like the character designs for the Tales of Monkey Island games. Guybrush looks like he has a birth defect. Hope there's still time to do a little tweeking...

@GoldenGamerXero

What the hell are you talking about? Monkey Island fans have been waiting for this for YEARS!

@Monodi

Way to comment on a screenshot of an unfinished scene without the lighting and shader polish that will be in the final game. The final game will look closer to this level of quality throughout:

And I think that's just FINE.

Umm... and then I posted the wrong screenshot. I meant it'll look closer to THIS:

They should, at the very least, also update Monkey Island 2. MI3 and beyond really don't need remakes, though.

Yeah, they're just waiting to see how well this one does before they waste their time on the sequels.

I have a feeling, or at least a hope, that they'll be remaking at least MI2 though.

I really don't understand all the complaining about Tales' graphics. I understand the desire to keep things true to the original beloved games, and the fanboyish fear of any sort of change, but there's really nothing wrong with the graphics. The updated graphics of the Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition do look arguably better, but the 3D graphics in Tales do look objectively better than the pixelated graphics of the first two games, and are undeniably an improvement over Escape from Monkey Island.

What's with the headline...? Talk about lame journalism. Brad, you should go work for Fox News, they love it when people make bad news out of no news.
