Luc Bernard quitting the games industry photo

Luc Bernard, following on from his now legendary behavior following Destructoid's review of Eternity's Child, has today announced that he will be leaving the games industry to concentrate on graphic novels. Once everything concerning Eternity's Child is wrapped up, he's gone.

The outspoken game designer made no secret that his love of the business was pretty low. He had viciously and publicly criticized many publishers in the past, and seemed to hate dealing with anybody during the course of development. It would seem that our review was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Luc claims that his other projects will now see the light of day as graphic novels, once he has overseen chapters two and three, as well the WiiWare version, of Eternity's Child. Claiming that the negative press attention caused illness and alcoholism, Bernard is leaving before the stress does him in.

Bernard is a creative man with a lot of ideas and a very clear desire to be successful. I've certainly enjoyed speaking with him over the past year and hope he really does well for himself. However, if he wants to continue to work in the public eye, he has to realize that bad things will invariably get said, and that negative reviews are part and parcel of whatever creative business one enters. Simply giving up after one bad press experience is not the way to triumph.

Looks like we'll never see more videogames about Pugs.

Judging from his comments I really don't think that life in the public eye -through any medium- is really his thing, despite what he may want.

Announcing after your first games poor reception that the negative criticism aimed at you has caused you to become a depressed alcoholic in the space of a fortnight is ridiculous and totally over the top.

The guy clearly isn't thick skinned enough to be able to handle the negativity and mindless insults that every person who has any kind of public presence suffers judging by his recent behaviour. I'd say good luck with whatever he goes on to do, but how will he react when someone says they hate his comic books or whatever, and someone will.

It seems that Mr. Bernard's newfound alcoholism has reached beyond his physical self. It's also reached into his child.

His eternal child.

This is a screenshot of the latest added scene. 100% unedited and completely real and definitely not faked with a minute of MS paint.

People need to learn that it's not enough to read something. You have to be able to comprehend what you're reading.

He didn't compare himself to Uwe Boll. Luc was getting at how people gleefully fucked with him, without any thought payed to how it might effect him mentally and emotionally. Just like they do Uwe.

It's like if you're a public figure, you're fair game, and fuck whether or not it might break you down.

Which I don't think was entirely wrong, if not for the same reasons Luc thought so. The tone does seem very unprofessional, but that's sort of what D-Toid is about. They aren't journalists after all.

Well, saying "DUDE, your fucking game KICKS FUCKING ASS!" isn't very professional either, but I doubt he'd have cared about the lack of professionalism if such had been the reception of Eternity's Child. He KNOWS Dtoid isn't orthodox, but I don't think I've ever seen an unFAIR review. Maybe it's not full of sugarcoated pleasantry, tiptoeing around saying not-so-cheerful things, or bland and passionless language. But I don't believe I've ever seen a review whose content I couldn't agree with (whining about numerical scores aside).

It's not the "professionalism" or lack thereof he had a problem with; his problem was with the meat of the review itself. He, being Tom Cruise, couldn't handle the truth. He knows what Dtoid is like. He expected glowing praise. He didn't get it, and instead got what Dtoid normally gives - the standard few inflammatory trolls aside - and when he whined and squealed and blamed everyone but himself, THAT'S when he got ripped to shreds.

Don't act like he didn't know what to expect. He was perfectly fine with the fact that Dtoid isn't "professional" (whatever the fuck that's REALLY supposed to mean) or traditional in its methods, until it got turned on him for half-assing his game.

The Internet...she is a hard mistress.

To quit because a bunch of people ripped on you...well, maybe you weren't meant to be in the gaming business. Hell, every game gets ripped on, even the best ones out there. If every developer acted as Luc did, we'd have no video games to play.

Oh well. Carry on.

I wish the man luck in whatever endeavor he wishes to participate in. Hopefully he will try his hand again in games. I highly doubt the greatest or even the most competent game makers out there started with resounding critical and/or financial success.

His art was strangely beautiful, I could easily see it being implemented into game form with the right amount of work, dedication and collaboration with seasoned veterans in the business.

It's a shame really. If he was to continue making games, then his next one would have a huge amount of free publicity and what better way to say "fuck you haters" then to make a really good second game.

Well the artwork is what always stood out in Eternities Child so maybe this is a better way for Luc to utilize his skills and I wish him luck in his adventures.

I love his art style and I hope he finds a decent writer. If he gets big enough as an artist, he might be able to work on games with a larger team where he would not have to handle so much of the production on his own.

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you allow your work or people's view of your work to define you as a person. When an internet community is your standard, and that community belittles you as a person (nevermind his remarks...they WERE unprofessional, but what other "professional" game designers are here trolling these boards offering some peer-to-peer advice as opposed to outright defamation?) it is bound to rock your world. I think the 1/10 reviews were well written and fair. The fallout was not.

My advice to Luc: In terms of art, do your best, and pick yourself up when you fall and then do your best again. Your best will get better. And there will always be people who don't like it or refuse to like it. That is them defining themselves, not defining you.

My advice to critics: We all have our weaknesses. Luc just showed his off, and got jumped on for it. Take a minute to look at your own. If you have none, start producing something, instead of destroying someone.

This whole thing has been pretty fascinating, to be sure.

It seems to me that Luc is just not cut out to be a public viewed artist. His game had some major flaws and he was jumped badly on it. Some were FAR more critical than they needed to be.. Honestly, two reviewers gave the game a 1/10 and yet Destructoid gave Eternal "Worst Fucking RPG Of This Generation" Sonata a 7.5/10? Overly critical and might I say it might even be a biased angle.

Yes, Luc didn't deserve all the childish commentary, likely over half of which came from people who didn't give a damn and just jumped on the bandwagon.

But this is just an extreme example of an individual who is acting like a spoiled brat who bought their way into art. Luc is not letting his creativity be an inspiration or letting it flourish into great lengths. Instead he got a mediocre team to make his game, and expected people to just like it. Making a game is a team effort, and apparently Luc didn't know that - and still doesn't.

Luc, if you want to make yourself a good person who is well respected in any community - it has to be earned. There will always be douchebags out there with unfair views, but for even the kindest of people - especially if your product costs money - you have to show them that you went to extra lengths to provide a quality product from day one. If you do not, then expect a great deal of backlash.

A movie studio cannot release a DVD release that has terrible audio quality and extremely pixilated video steams. A game studio cannot release a broken game and expect good response. Fix it, Ship it. That order, no other.

God damn. I wasn't particularly interested in the game, so I didn't check out the review until today when it all of a sudden became a big thang.

Granted, he shouldn't have allowed a bunch of tards on a website to bother him so much, but I think as a whole Dtoid took things a little too far. Not the reviews, they told me that I was wise to not play the game that I didn't intend to play so thats fine, thats what they're for.

@ Bioautographical

One can deliver positive criticism in the most off-the-wall manner possible, and the message itself is going to superceed how it was presented. You're right about that much. However, the opposite is true where negative criticism is concerned. If you dress it up in irreverant overtones, then the message often gets buried under the words you used to convey it.

Now while you and I might appreciate the tone of D-Toid's reviews, and how they go to great lengths to separate themselves from other sites that post dry, and arguably soulless, reviews, you gotta be fucking blind not to see how that approach might bite D-Toid in the ass from time to time. I'm not saying that I think that it's right that anyone should be bothered by D-Toid's reviews. These guys are just bloggers for fuck's sake, not the Pope of Video-games. Even so, I sure as fuck understand how it might happen that someone could.

Look, I don't think that the reviews were unproffessional, but then, I wasn't the one with my head on the chopping block. However, I can see how their tone might come across as being unprofessional to someone who just saw something he poured himself into appearing to be savaged. It's all down to perception. I don't have to think that he's right in order to see it his way either. A little understanding does the trick.

And that's what this is about to me. The dude fucked up, sure, but where was the understanding? Y'all act like you've never fucked up before, but the moment someone else fucks up, you fly at your keyboards like mad-men, textually raping people like your lives depend on it. And saying he started it doesn't excuse give you free reign to jump up his ass and plant your eggs in his colon either. If the dude is being a bitch, then be the bigger man.

Anyway, none of that shit would bother me so much if it weren't for how much it reminds me of shit-holes like GameFAQs. I'd hate to see one of the best sites on the web overrun by stupid bullshit. D-Toid is better than that.

As for this well, it sucks what happened but he did bring it on himself or at least his team, the game would have been better received had it gone through extensive playtesting.

I know the PC market is the only place where you can release a beta for full price but it still pisses people off and saying you will patch the game is no excuse.

For those of you who are defending Luc, I'd like to remind you (in the most mature way of saying "He started it" that I can muster) that he started this backlash. He called the staff unprofessional because they didn't like his game. He made false claims of humility and accepting responsibility, in the same breath that he tried to spread the blame.

Some people were really harsh towards him, yes; but I think some of you are being way too charitable towards a man who clearly is a bit of a pretentious, oversensitive twat.

By the way, how did Destructoid cause his alcoholism? He responded to the reviews almost immediately stating that he was already drunk, he is probably already a drunk but just wants to blame it on someone else for the pity. Don't forget, he did the same thing to his programmer, he took no responsibility for the problems with the game and then blamed it all on his programmer. He does these things. He blames his problems on other people and then the people who pity him jump in and act like he's done nothing to warrant the negative attention.

Also, in an underhanded and sneaky move, he put Mr. Destruction in the game to try and gain favor with the Destruction community. After the reviews turned up detailing how bad the game really was he flipped; insulted the reviewers, community, and even his own programmer then announced that he was removing Mr. Destructoid. That doesn't warrant negative attention? He acts like a child who can't get his way even after trying the "puppy dog eye" routine.

If he had simply accepted the blame for the mistakes of his game and said he'd work to correct the mistakes. I guarantee that he would still be in good standing with the Destructoid community. He brought it all on himself. Blaming Destruction, the community, and calling them "sheeple" or "sheeptoid" just makes you look as foolish as Luc.

He's definitely better as an artist than a programmer or game developer, so going with graphic novels will be better for him. Let's just hope he doesn't piss his pants and beat his fists against the floor in anger when someone criticise his art work, because it's going to happen. Everyone and everything has it's critics no matter how well received they are.

I believe the only hopes and dreams of Luc Bernard, is money. That’s all I’ve ever really noticed from his posting of this game and others. You could always tell how bad the gameplay looked from videos but that didn’t stop him from publishing it. He even planned merchandise and a film around it. $5 adds up quickly when you think about how many possible purchases can come from Steam and WiiWare. This ontop of his subject matter which always has to "shock". This game contains an orphaned gay, drug addicted, homeless prostitute. Oh and this one is about a lesbian and a drug addicted, alcoholic, mechanical rabbit. Oh and this one is about the Holocaust. I feel none of these things would be that big of a deal, but he seems to makes it a big deal and creates his own controversy.

He needs to start small. Get some free games under his belt, learn what makes games fun. Everyone has ideas, but it takes someone special to actually make them work. How much time did he really spend on the artwork, a week" a month at the most? And his only job was the artwork(game design and story don’t amount to much it seems)? He could of at least animated all of the characters instead of cheating his way out.

WW: "Do you see yourself as a videogame creator or an artist, and do you think it’s possible to be both without one area of expertise suffering?"

LB: "Videogames are entertainement, you just need to be good at entertaining. People should stop thinking that videogames should only be done by game designers. Now everyone plays games this industry needs more people from other areas in it. For example, one of my friends is a singer and she came up with the best gameplay ideas and she hardly ever touches videogames."

Way to get butthurt over internet commentary, Luc. I'm sure there have been plenty of devs who released a few shitty, critically panned games before making anything good. You just have to swallow your pride and keep going. Destructoid is the voice of probably 1% of the gaming community, and that might be a pretty generous estimate.

If making games just isn't your cup of tea, that's understandable. But why give up on something you love just because some kids on the internet said some bad things? Take the criticism constructively, use your experience and feedback to make an even better game in the future.

Ah well, you probably won't read this anyway.

Luc, you reacted like a baby, passed the buck, back-peddled and never once, that i have seen, owned up for your own shortcomings.

The reviewers were fair with giving a broken product a bad score, and even if the community acted like juvenile pricks, you weren't any better. If you can't take criticism, you will never succeed in any creative media, or at most anything in life for that matter.

Do your best, admit your mistakes, learn from them and try again. Lather, rinse repeat.

All that said, I'm sorry your brainchild got such negative attention. I'm not sure I would have done any better if it was one of my story concepts being grilled to a brittle piece of carbon.

Hopefully it will once again broadcast the message that art does not equal design, and you can't make a game good by making it pretty. Too bad that message has been going around for 20 years and 90% of developers still don't care.
