Luc Bernard: DLC is like 'raping the customer' photo

With digital distribution taking over this generation, we've all gotten used to the idea of paying for extra content. However, iPhone developer and controversial figure Luc Bernard has railed against the idea of paid DLC on the App Store, claiming it's a rape of the consumer.

"I keep on seeing all this talk about paid-for DLC on the App Store," explains the Oyaji Games head. "I honestly don't like it. When I buy a game I want to have everything in there for the price I paid.

"We could have made the online portion of the game an in-app micro transaction but I think that would be raping the customer. I honestly don't believe in paid-for DLC on the App Store. Most of the top games are 99 cents games so the average iPhone customer is obviously not willing to spend a lot of cash on games. To be honest, I would rather have a fresh new experience than loads of additional content."

What do you think? Is DLC rape? Do you mind paying a few extra bucks for some new levels, and are you willing to do that on an iPhone? Is console DLC more worthy than portable DLC? Right now, all I know is that these Rock Band Unplugged tracks aren't going to purchase themselves.

Most of the time yes it is.

But occasionally the price you pay is worth the extra content. (think broken steel for Fallout3).

Or its free! free sex is not rape!

Like Luc said iTunes games are dirt cheap, people aren't willing to pay 99c for a game and then 99c more for more of the game, the only exception might be the actual expansions, the only game with expansions I know of is The Quest, I haven't purchased any expansion yet, but it adds enough hours of gameplay and new items to actually be worth paying for....

If it's just a few extra missions, then it should be free, if it's almost doubles the hours of gameplay, a price is justified.

I think it depends. Sometimes it’s worth it like some of the Fallout stuff. But asking me to pay for the ending to Prince of Persia........ that’s just taking the piss.

I've been saying this for a lot. Releasing the game for $60 then three more levels for $10 doesn't make the game better.

Well this Luc (or is it Lucy?) seems to contradict him/herself:
"Most of the top games are 99 cents games so the average iPhone customer is obviously not willing to spend a lot of cash on games. "

If that's true (and it is for less perceptive buyers), then people aren't going to buy the in-app DLC anyway. What's more, only paid apps can charge you for in-app DLC and of course, just like on a console, it's entirely optional.

I remember when everyone was up in arms about the horse armour DLC, but now that's the standard. But I suppose times have changed, and there's some good DLC out there. Screw paying to unlock stuff that's already on the disc though.

On the App Store, sure. Most people will never pay another dollar for DLC to their bite-sized game anyway.

However, I see DLC on consoles/handhelds/PCs to be an advancement of retail expansions. Quality DLC like the Shivering Isles and Broken Steel is cheaper to download, you don't need to go to the store to add to a game you already have and developers can get it out into the market faster.

I agree with him in principle (DLC should not be abused to nickel-n-dime the consumer, I'm looking at you Rock Band), but this

When I buy a game I want to have everything in there for the price I paid.

is a very arbitrary statement. You pay for a game and you get a game, that's it. If they release additional DLC, that doesn't necessarily mean they're holding out on the initial release. I mean, would you rather they not release that DLC at all?

Man, remember the days of EXPANSION PACKS? That was crazy shit right there. Buying a game for $60, then paying another $30 or more to get an extra campaign, or two extra character classes, or being able to turn into a werewolf...

If DLC is rape, I'd like to know what expansion packs are. Or were, at any rate.

I think, like most things it's neither all good nor all bad. You have to take it on a case by case basis. If I like a game and the creator releases more content for it, I'm usually grateful.

I'll give you a for-instance. I'm currently madly addicted to Demon's Souls. I haven't beaten it, but after I do, if they announce down the road they're going to release some new dungeons or something, I'm going to be stoked! As long as the pricing is right and the addon is quality I will be totally on board. I think DLC add-ons are a great hold-over until the sequel comes out (hint hint, I already want a sequel!).

Me personally I can agree with the whole DLC rape topic, however nothing burns my ire more then the fact that DLC stays the same price even after the game went down in price. If the game is selling at 19.99 in the bargin bin then the DLC should be lowered as well, if not FREE.

Because the iPhone and related service charges aren't rape at all? Hah, typical Apple mentality. The content is dirt cheap which makes it perfectly fine for the device to be overpriced. So this iPhone developer (which already knocks his credibility down significantly) is against additional content? Not every single idea can be thought out and created by a game's release date, or even finalized. Things take time to create, and instead of delaying a games release several months, they utilize DLC. Think about it, if Fallout 3 had to wait for all of it's DLC to be on the disc, we would just now be seeing it on retail shelves. Of course there are exceptions (the Beautiful Katamari DLC comes to mind) but for the most part DLC is a legitimate expense that covers the costs of making the content. People need to eat and live, just because you're a cheapass doesn't change the fact that real people spent their time creating this. Unless it's DLC on day one or DLC that completes a game's core storyline (like PoP) or something horribly buggy (like ME's Pinnacle Station) I have no problems with it.

Considering the vast majority of apps are less than $5, I think that DLC is a rather silly concept, at least on the iPhone department, unless they give an equal amount of enjoyment and gameplay, but those could really just be sold as sequels. DLC in general can be a good thing I will admit, just developers and publishers need to be responsible and intelligent about it.

To be honest DLC is like a "catch 22" situation. Yeah, we want new levels and content and are willing to pay for them but, we are not willing to pay for DLC of half made stuff or things designed so that DLC will come out, or even worse unlock something that comes with the product.

The thing is it works, people know it does and because of this they release DLC and charge for it; it's set in stone now and theirs probably F*all we can do about it apart from boycott, which in turn leads to no DLC... a healthy balance is needed though.

If you pay extra to get more toppings on your hamburger, that's your decision. Bottom line is, you still have a hamburger.

Now, if you have to pay the restaurant extra to get the hamburger cooked, you're getting screwed.

If DLC adds to the game experience without detracting from the original on-disc game itself, it's fine. If the DLC is used to "patch" a game up to what it should have been when you originally opened the box, then it's wrong.

I totally agree, but the people that are the real problem are the MORONS that pay for it. The games companys are out to make money, that's why they exist. If no one bought DLC then the developers/publishers would stop blatantly holding content back until after release.

If you buy DLC then YOU are the problem.

I don't like DLC, but I think it depends on the game. stuff like Rock Band is basically made to keep changing and growing, and DLC really enhances the experience. however, for more story-based games, I think it's a bit of a ripoff...why not save it for a potential sequel?

No, it's not. Comparing an optional content update to rape is ridiculous. Don't want to pay for it, don't buy the DLC. Have a moral objection to games selling DLC? Don't buy the game at all. It's a product being sold to you, you don't have a right to it.

I think trivializing rape by comparing the occasional case of selling witheld parts of a game and the more likely situation of charging money for extra content you spent time and resources making to forced sex is fucking stupid.

Dear Mr "Jean" Luc Bernard,

IN regards to your statement

"I honestly don't like it. When I buy a game I want to have everything in there for the price I paid."

Everything you paid for is in the product. You are purchasing extra content which may or may not have been available at the time of purchase. Just because you and your company decided not to charge for an extra feature does not mean everybody else has the resources to do so.

You also made the following statement:

"I honestly don't believe in paid-for DLC on the App Store. Most of the top games are 99 cents games so the average iPhone customer is obviously not willing to spend a lot of cash on games."

Perhaps they are not worth anymore as the iPhone is not designed as a gaming device, but has been used as such by iPhone adapters. If you want to have a portable gaming device with games worth more, I suggest a Nintendo DSi or a Sony PSP.

Lastly you commented on something I am confused about:
"To be honest, I would rather have a fresh new experience than loads of additional content."

Are you saying that developers should release a new game instead of adding in new content for a small fee? If the new content is a new level or other such trivial content, are you stating that they should hold onto this new content from the player and release a new version to sell for the price of a new game? Isn't that like raping the customer in the ass compared to the vagina? Which hurts more in your opinion?

I understand that you do not read Destructoid, but I thought i would pose these questions to you anyhow.

Sincerely,

IMO, the Horse Armor DLC wasn't rape, it was volentary self inflicted broomstick sodomy...

I do not consider DLC in general a problem, but the pricing model currently being accespted as the "NORM" does not reflect the value of the content itself. Then again, I guess that could be argued about entire new releases as well....*shrug*

Well, I think it is up to the user as to whether or not he or she pays for DLC. Personally, I never bought one map pack for COD World At War. I did not like that game nearly as much as COD4 and I did not find the multiplayer better than the multiplayer for COD4. When Modern Warfare 2 comes out, I will buy DLC because all my money for COD4 has been well spent and continues to be since I still play COD4 online and even take a stab at the higher difficulty levels in the single player. So, I think it is a call the user should make based on their taste for the game they are playing.

just thought we could take another look at that statement. isn't the only difference in the current plastic guitar games from the original titles, the fact that they now cost more to play?
