After years of hard work, Mount & Blade total conversion mod 'The Last Days of the Third Age of Middle Earth' version 3.0 is up for grabs on ModDB. This mod is based on the books and not the movie incarnations, and well... it's The Lord of the Rings meets Mount & Blade! That means LOTR styled armies, NPCs, towns, interactions, and a ton of things to do as you field your army to end the last great war of that age.

It's a mod for the original Mount & Blade version 1.011 -- not for Mount & Blade: Warband or With Fire & Sword -- and the devs will be adding even more features and fixes in the coming months. They also point out that future updates to the mod will likely not be compatible with your old The Last Days save games.

It looks like a great reason to get back into Mount & Blade if you stopped playing it, and it's free to boot. If you don't have Mount & Blade, I'm sure it will make an appearance in the Christmas Steam sales again.
