LOTR: The White Council cancelled; hope for Tom Bombadil cosplay dwindling photo

Shacknews brings us word that EA's somewhat anticipated mega-RPG The Lord of the Rings: The White Council has been cancelled. The game was set to combine the open-world, single-player-MMO dynamic of Oblivion with Tolkien's familiar and oft-copied climes, and as such, it was one of the biggest releases based on the property since Bilbo's Mule Adventure.

While (book-to-)movie-to-game translations rarely work, the Lord of the Rings series had done surprisingly well for itself. It didn't hurt things that Tolkien's ideas have been the blueprint for everything from Dungeons And Dragons to Warcraft, but it was also evident that EA was putting forth more than their usual effort when translating an existing IP to a game. Personally, I would have liked to have seen White Council released simply so that consumers would have a chance to support that kind of effort, which we see all too rarely.

I guess this cancellation signals the end of the media juggernaut that was Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. When a company like EA (that hooks their employees up to catheters to save them from wasting their most productive moments with something as trivial as urination) feels it can no longer milk your franchise like the emaciated, dust-coughing cow it has become, it's quite apparent that you won't be seeing Gandalf doing lines with Robert Evans in the bathroom at Spago.

1) Is Bilbo's Mule Adventure a real game? The link is broken. I'm guessing the JPG involves Gandalf stuffing heroin-filled balloons up Bilbo's hobbithole.

2) Funny the Robert Evans reference. I just saw "The Kid Stays in the Picture." It gets two Lezbros!

But sincerely, this is why videogames are so fucking adolescent and do not deserve to be taken seriously as an artistic medium. Why isn't there a Bob Evans videogame, a Brief History of Time videogame, a Klaus Kinski as Faust videogame?

Elebits.

Who has the brass ones to stack that pile of horseshit up against Fitzcarraldo, Jackie Brown, or Do the Right Thing? Miyamoto -- widely regarded as top of the medium -- is not worthy to lick the boot of Kurosawa.

aww man! this sucks!!! i met with one of the lead developers this summer!!! they're a bunch of really cool people (3 of the developers are CMU grads) who are actually working hard!! the game was really far a long!!! it was going to be a huge world (bigger than oblivion) with up to 16 players forming a team (so you could go along if you want, or up to 16), but only 16 players per world.... everybody else would be an NPC... i saw some early shots from the game.. it looked really good!!! i mean i personally wouldn't get it unless it was amazing (i have my other priorities), but i know this would appeal to many many people and was proving to be a very good game! and the developers were working hard! this really sucks!

Nex, thanks for the suggestion, I wouldn't have watched it otherwise.

@thisissami:

That's the most information I've heard about the White Council so far, it actually sounds like it could have been pretty interesting. After that lousy LotR: The Third Age RPG, I had zero interest in it.

This guy claims to work for EA. He says the game is delayed till Feb 2008. The cancellation report came from an anonymous source at 1up? (This is all according to this guy)
