LOTR Online gets new expansion: Mines of Moria photo

Codemasters is holding its Connect 08 event today, and unfortunately yours truly can't attend (indie blogging has its downsides). Fortunately, I had planned to send a very capable and trusted colleague to go in my stead. With nobody of that caliber available, I just told Wardrox to go. He's providing me information for the frontpage and the first big announcement is that Lord of the Rings Online is getting a new expansion -- Conquer the World Beneath.

The new expansion, taking players into the Mines of Moria, includes ten new levels, two classes and three regions including Loch Lorrien. Other general notes of hype include dynamic lighting, "world changing" instances, environment aware AI and bosses such as The Balrog.

The game's creators claim that LOTRO is "just getting started," and with two new books (patches), dwarf cities, and "legendary items" on the way, it sounds like Codies is really pushing for this to be a high level MMO.

We just got word that a Web site for the new expansion has launched seconds ago, and can be viewed right here. It will feature a Web game that launches on March 31st and can be played to unlock stuff in the real game. Check it out for the full info.

Does anyone in the community play this game? I've read at IGN and GFW that this game was actually pretty good. No WOW killer of course but its fun nonetheless.

I tried the open beta and found my old rig simply couldn't handle it. It seemed interesting enough for the short amount of time I played.

Also, be ready 'LF DPS 4 Balrog. PST.'

Played the Open Beta and then up to level 25 ish after launch. Was fun but my friends went back to WoW and I lost interest at that point. This expansion does sound tempting though.

I play this game. I've never played WoW so I don't have a comparison, but from the way people describe WoW, it seems they're having fun just being with their friends, accomplishing shit. And you can do that in this game, to say the least.
My favorite thing about this game is the fellowship maneuvers in the group combat system. :)

I don't play MMOs, but if I did, I'd likely play this. It looks so cool.

Thanks Wardrox!

Also, I remember playing the beta of this. It's almost identical to WoW in terms of gameplay (or at least the beta was. I don't know what's changed.)

I played LOTR:O for about 6 months after release, and I have to say I enjoyed it much more than I did WoW (played WoW for a year).

If you can run it at full settings, the game is -beautiful-. I still remember arriving at Rivendell the first time, and the trolls... oh man the trolls. A low level troll is spooky, but a level 50 troll is full battle armor is incredible. Don't even get me started on Dragons... Thorog the zombie dragon!

I ended up quitting after 6 months simply because I'm not a fan of end game content. They do have lots of it though, raids, "Book" epic quests, PvP, and reputation grinds. There's a lot of stuff to do, but you can finish it up over the course of a month.

My MMO jumping friends and I really want a reason to go back, and I think this will be it!

hopefully there will be new character slots to go with the new classes. as for those on the fence about trying it there is the free 7 day trial and how many MMOs can you play that include a Keg o' doom that gets you so drunk you end up being ported to some random place.

Haha fish with hat! Where'd you end up?

Started at my kin's house... woke up stinking drunk at the Forsaken Inn... Kinmates of mine woke up naked on top of the Giant's Needle.

I might have to consider start playing again with all this new content...

For all you asking, the game is amazing! The reason I had to quit is because I was spending too much time playing it...
