Lost Odyssey creator talks about his next project photo

Lost Odyssey kind of made an impact on me. Sort of. Destructoid's Jim Sterling and Chad Concelmo were also both vocal fans of the Mistwalker RPG, and I've personally found myself keeping a close eye on the studio's future since. Hironobu Sakaguchi recently updated the Mistwalker dev blog recently with some information about the new project, which he describes as a "four wheel drive Lego with removable doors". Here's more from the blog:

What about the game itself? Planning to basically put importance on having seamless control of the overall direction of the game, mixed with CG spectacle scenes. Controls will have a bit of a trick to it, while having a blend of RPG-type strategy and growth. Behaviors based on interaction with the situation around you...wait, I'm not supposed to say more than this… ^^

Sakaguchi also says more info about the game will be coming later this year. Can't wait! We'll bring you more as soon as we hear it, but I'm very excited to see more about this new project.

I was hoping it would be Lost Odyssey 2, but then, I'm keeping my eye on everything Mistwalker puts out, considering LO was so fantastic.

so, is it Lost Odyssey II or Blue Dragon 5?

I worship Hironobu Sakaguchi, likely due to his involvement in the creation of Final Fantasy IX. Can't wait for more Mistwalker games.

I have respect for the man and all, but there is nothing in that description that sounds new, interesting, or special in any way.

I suppose I'll have to wait and see more.

What was the name of that Mistwalker game that got canned a few months ago?
I think I saw some images of it lookin pretty good. Such a shame.

All of MistWalker's games have been great, looking forward to whatever else they plan to put out.

I actually don't want a sequel to Lost Odyssey. The game was spectacular as its own entity. I want Mistwalker to make something else though of that calibre.

I guess I will have to keep an eye on this.

I agree with you Naia. I want that game left alone too, but I want something equally as good. I know after LO, Mistwalker can do it. :)

Blargh, I've had enough of JRPGs, they are so damn stale and dated when compared to other genres. I don't get the Lost Odyssey love, I found it hackneyed and badly acted. Gameplay wise I guess it was pretty solid if uninspired.

As for The Last Remnant, I rented that recently and sent it almost straight back. When Epic saw what Square Enix were doing with the Unreal Engine 3 they should have taken the license off them and then sent a rape squad to the developers' office to repay the insult.

I just bought LO the other day (just spoken to some queen or other).

It seems to start a bit slow =/.

i want an LO sequel. Kaim gone missing, Cooke and Mack grown up, and the epic return of Seth in the 3rd disc.. nice!

Yeah, Lost Odyssey is one of those games that people around me keep telling me is amazing, but I just found it completely mediocre. Beyond any story or character issues, it had some terrible game mechanics and encouraged the worst kind of "check every container" exploration. Not too excited about any sort of follow-up by the same team.

LO was superb enough to put anything Mistwalker does on my radar

Unless its another blue dragon

@naia and Colette: I don't see why they wouldn't make a game called Lost Odyssey 2 that has little to do with the original, with still the same care and quality put into it. It doesn't have to be a direct sequel featuring Kaim et al., just another really solid traditional JRPG.

Currently playing through LO, and loving it. One of the best RPGs I've played in recent times. Eagerly anticipating what Mistwalker come up with next.

Also, I don't know how many times I've posted pretty much this same message in the past month or so.

@Dexter: I agree, isn't that what each new Final Fantasy iteration is. They have nothing to do with their predecessors, and simply use the name to keep it identifiable and marketable.

FFXIII could be called "Eloi vs. Morlocks: Battle for Gotham City" (from what I've read of the plot synopsis and setting it seems plausible :) ). But if they called it that, a lot of people would probably not buy it.

Therefore, Lost ODyssey 2 needn't have anything to do with Lost Odyssey 1.

I gotta get Lost Odyssey after my 360 and PS3 get back from the repair shop. Of course, that would conflict with Valkyria Chronicles, and that makes me sad T_T

Im with you falcon, LO came out around RROD #1 for me so I passed it up, now I want to get it but Im playing through valkyria chronicles, and cross edge and infamous are out at the end of the month (and I have P4 and rouge galaxy untouched right in front of me), I just cant find the time of day to play all these games.

I played Lost Odyssey for, at max, 40 mins and almost burst into tears. Not picked it up since. Not because it's a bad game, more because I can't cope with the emotional trauma it deals!

Whatever Mistwalker comes out with next, i'm just praying it's easier on my girly side than the time I spent with LO was!

Another LO would be nice, but I don't want Mistwwalker to fall into the fear t business of sticking to one name for the games.

Yeah, I'd rather see a fresh new game. Jrpgs are indeed becoming stale and cliched, despite the positive changes of Persona, LO and Valkyria. I hope Mistwalker take a look at what some western developers are doing with rpgs, as well as the east. Then he'll be in a prime position to take jrpgs in a different direction.

By the way Mistwalker, where's our english translation of Archaic Sealed Heart for DS? This game seems to have gone awol, and should have been out ages ago.

I think Mistwalker's cancelled porject was Cry On.
The new project might be another blue dragon with DS version's game play?

If they were to make an LO2, I think it would be proper to be a prequel. Either their homeworld and all the Gongora nonsense. Or they can take Kaim's (and maybe Seth's) most important battles/moments from the dream sequences.
