Lorne Lanning further confirms Oddworld project photo

Last week, we posted the news that Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun had confirmed a new Oddworld game, and there was much rejoicing. Now the head of Oddworld Inhabitants, Lorne Lanning, has added his own confirmation.

"I can confirm that we're working with Jeff on Oddworld stuff," stated Lanning. "That's all I can say at this time. [Braun] was giving a talk to a school, but there hasn't been a formal announcement, yet."

For me, Oddworld Inhabitants was a tragic creative failure. Originally designed as a quintology, we only ever got two official titles in the series, Abe's Odyssey and Munch's Odyssey. There were other spin-off games (the last game being '05's Stranger's Wrath), but the project was canceled before its grand designs could ever be close to realized. Oddworld Inhabitants scrapped the idea when they decided to move into animated films, which was a real shame as the games and universe were excellent.

With a ridiculous six games unfinished, there's plenty for the team to be getting on with. Will we finally get Squeek's Odyssey? Sligstorm? Hand of Odd? Probably none of those, but I'm going to wait expectantly for a quality Oddworld game regardless. It's been far, far too long.

They should release their unfinished projects anyway to keep us happy!

So long to wait!

I'd guess it would be on 360 or PS3 since the previous games were on PS1 and Xbox. Who knows though, it's way too early to think about that yet.

Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus were awesome. Munch kind of sucked but they redeemed themselves with Stranger. I would love to see what they can do on 360/PS3.

There are only 3 more games in the quintology though, not six (that'd make it an octology).

I don't mean to be Debbie Downer, but everyone who made Oddworld so great, the artists, designers, coders, where fired when Oddworld "decided to go into animated films" and they were fired with very little notice. All that is left is Lanning and I am dubious of what he can pull off with all the creativity that was responsible for the first games working elsewhere.

So boo on what is most certainly a game made with mostly outsourced talent! Bad for us good for India or Korea!

As fun as Stranger's Wrath was, they really need to make another title in the likeness of Abe's games.

To this day, Abe's Exoddus is the only game I have beaten more than four times. I love Oddworld that much, and I am SO excited it is coming back.

Ah, nothing beats the sight of a depressed Mudokon slapping himself to death. Reminds me of summer...

I've liked Oddworld with Abe since the Amiga/PS1 days.. I'm hoping to see more of the original storyline(s) as Stranger's Wrath didn't get my attention.

If it's as good as Stranger's Wrath, I'll be a happy camper. That was easily one of the best Xbox games.

I played Oddworld when I was younger and rather enjoyed it. I wasn't very good at games back then, so I didn't beat it nor get very far really, but it was a pretty fun game.

I'll definitely look into this when some info comes rollin' out!

But for now, Maxis: STFU MOAR SPORE!

Only two official titles? Wasn't Abe's Exoddus official? That was my favorite one!

Lorne "up the establishment" Lanning. Decry's corporate fuckery "globilisation" across the board yet has no problem dropping long term employees the second it looks like he'll lose a dime of his own cash. Then dismantles his company and heads off to india to save on manpower costs. The guy fulills every ridiculous stereotype of a limousine liberal.

"Only two official titles? Wasn't Abe's Exoddus official? That was my favorite one!"

Nope. Abe's Exodus is officially a spin-off game. The "proper" Oddworld games were five titles each revolving around a brand new character. The fact that this idea derailed after the first game was probably proof that it wasn't going to work. Not that Abe's Exodus is a bad game, it's a fucking stellar game -- it just deviated from the plan ridiculously quickly because they realized they could make a few more bucks out of the Abe character.

I like the Oddworld games (Strangers Wrath was my favourite) but I was always annoyed when they would cancel an upcoming title.

That being said, I hope they do a Strangers Wrath 2 as it was left wide open for a sequel.
