Even though the serious lack of a playable Princess Peach in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is disappointing, I can't stay mad. Watching this gameplay footage always leaves a smile on my face, and I'll be in need of a light-hearted game soon, what with Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 also arriving in November.
It's weird that there hasn't been more buzz for NSMB Wii lately; or maybe there is and I'm just not seeing it. A new side-scrolling Mario game? If we were living in the early 90s, we'd be losing our collective s**t right about now.
In the hope that this will get everyone talking about the game again, here is a small collection of character artwork Nintendo released today. The Koopa Kids are looking good -- I can appreciate the subtle changes that were made. And as for invincible Mario ... I'm absolutely mesmerized here. Must. Look. Away.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Those layers of dust on my Wii will have to be removed, though.
You're right about the lack of buzz... Why?! Oh, well. I'm excited as hell, Grim!
"If we were living in the early 90s, we'd be losing our collective s**t right about now." =) Ha ha! So true.
Here's hoping everyone at Nintendo forgets about them again after NSMB Wii...
Not sure how the Koopa Kids are being disrespected by being resurrected in what looks to be the best Mario 2D platformer since SMW. Besides, 2D Mario > 3D Mario.
Very few people are excited by the latest Pearl Jam album either so I'm pretty sure we have moved on as a culture since the early 90s. To me at least, a side scrolling game in this day and age should be a downloadable, low budget game or on DS. No way will it earn my gaming cash over the winter's other big releases.
New Super Mario Bros. outsold Super Mario Bros. 3. The sidescroller is arguably more popular among consumers than it was during the original Mario's debut, seeing as one of the series' most mediocre entries beat out it's strongest entry sales-wise.
I don't know why there isn't hype, but it's pretty much a given that this Mario will be more popular than Galaxy if you use history as a guide. Not immediately more popular necesarily, but don't be surprised to see this game in top ten best seller lists years after it's release.
Maybe it's nostalgia in part, but this is exactly the sort of thing I WOULD pick up over other upcoming releases. It's fun, it's lighthearted, it's colorful, and it's not the kind of thing I need to devote hours upon hours to, even though I might end up playing it that long anyway.

Did we not play SMB3? Those are magic wands.
I can't wait for this. I've played every Mario game I can get my hands on, and I don't plan to stop now. I consider it the pinnacle of gaming, and will probably take a day off from work just to play this when it launches. CAN'T WAIT. KOOPA KIDS HELL YEAH.
I never imagined myself saying that, congrats Nintendo. Can't wait for this game!!
Nope, he was able to in SMW if you played him in 2-player mode.
Also: KOOPA KIDS! WOOO!!
Wouldn't it be funny if they had them AND Bowser Jr. though? I was always wondering how that worked...
KOOPA KIDS!!!
I would love to hear your reasoning why a side-scroller should be on the DS or a low budget download. I really want to know how you could possibly turn that into a reasonable statement.
@xero - it surprises me that the fellow in that picture can make such a good living being not funny.
Things like Shadow Complex and Splosion Man have set the bar too high. Making a sidescroller is less effort and cost for Nintendo to develop - it should be a budget title.
That's my opinion. I'm entitled to it.
@Your Moms
Less effort? 4-player co-op and bringing back all the stuff from Mario's glory days is less of an effort to you? Well, to each his own, then...
Well said.
The Koopa Kids are finally back! Sweet.
Also, have many of you so quickly forgotten?! Those are magic scepters originally used by Kamek in SMB3, they shoot out square, circle and triangle magic attacks.
On topic... Why does Wendy O. Koopa look so angry compared to the rest of the Koopa Kids?
(ahem)
