Look at this gorgeous New Super Mario Bros. Wii artwork photo

Even though the serious lack of a playable Princess Peach in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is disappointing, I can't stay mad. Watching this gameplay footage always leaves a smile on my face, and I'll be in need of a light-hearted game soon, what with Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 also arriving in November.

It's weird that there hasn't been more buzz for NSMB Wii lately; or maybe there is and I'm just not seeing it. A new side-scrolling Mario game? If we were living in the early 90s, we'd be losing our collective s**t right about now.

In the hope that this will get everyone talking about the game again, here is a small collection of character artwork Nintendo released today. The Koopa Kids are looking good -- I can appreciate the subtle changes that were made. And as for invincible Mario ... I'm absolutely mesmerized here. Must. Look. Away.

Koopa Kids make NSMB Wii a must buy.

Those layers of dust on my Wii will have to be removed, though.

That picture of the Koopalings brings a huge smile to my face, as well! The game is gonna be full of amazing retro-tastic fun!
You're right about the lack of buzz... Why?! Oh, well. I'm excited as hell, Grim!
"If we were living in the early 90s, we'd be losing our collective s**t right about now." =) Ha ha! So true.

I think some people refuse to talk about it for the tease the DS game was. I for one part feel very excited for it. Especially as it has been mentioned before, the Koopa Kids had to come back without excuse. They are the real mischievous siblings while Bowser Jr is just late to the party.

I think the issue is it's a Wii game and it seems every Wii title receives nothing but a mediocre reception from core games regardless of its pedigree. I'll definitely pick this up, 4 player for the win.

Yeah, well, call me when these characters get the proper treatment and respect and are placed in a proper 3D Mario iteration. Quit being lazy Nintendo.

That's not invincible Mario, it's just Chad in a Mario costume.

Ah, fuck. The Koopalings are back for real this time.

Here's hoping everyone at Nintendo forgets about them again after NSMB Wii...

@Solgrin

Not sure how the Koopa Kids are being disrespected by being resurrected in what looks to be the best Mario 2D platformer since SMW. Besides, 2D Mario > 3D Mario.

fuck. you got me. i was totally preparing a loud and ridiculous boycott of this game but god dammit if it doesn't look incredibly fun. the whole princess peach thing just pissed me off so much...i think i just feel pretty grossed out by NOA. reluctantly, this game is now radar'd.

ok 'gorgeous'? Are you being serious? It just looks generic cgi crap you get on kids channels like Dinosaur Train.

Very few people are excited by the latest Pearl Jam album either so I'm pretty sure we have moved on as a culture since the early 90s. To me at least, a side scrolling game in this day and age should be a downloadable, low budget game or on DS. No way will it earn my gaming cash over the winter's other big releases.

@ Your Moms

New Super Mario Bros. outsold Super Mario Bros. 3. The sidescroller is arguably more popular among consumers than it was during the original Mario's debut, seeing as one of the series' most mediocre entries beat out it's strongest entry sales-wise.

I don't know why there isn't hype, but it's pretty much a given that this Mario will be more popular than Galaxy if you use history as a guide. Not immediately more popular necesarily, but don't be surprised to see this game in top ten best seller lists years after it's release.

What's up with the symbols coming out of the torch? Is this a subliminal message that this game will later be ported to PlayStation systems? Oh, wait, it's Mario. nvm.

@Your Moms Hot Lover: Because just because a game is restricted to 2-dimensions, it can't be more fun than a 3D game, right? I don't understand why the thought is that side-scrollers should be nothing more than cheap or portable games. Maybe it's the stigma of "Well, they made games like that 20 years ago. Oooooold". If the game manages to give you even 6 hours of fun, then it's already reached the length of most current-gen games at a price point that's $10 cheaper.

Maybe it's nostalgia in part, but this is exactly the sort of thing I WOULD pick up over other upcoming releases. It's fun, it's lighthearted, it's colorful, and it's not the kind of thing I need to devote hours upon hours to, even though I might end up playing it that long anyway.

Did we not play SMB3? Those are magic wands.

I can't wait for this. I've played every Mario game I can get my hands on, and I don't plan to stop now. I consider it the pinnacle of gaming, and will probably take a day off from work just to play this when it launches. CAN'T WAIT. KOOPA KIDS HELL YEAH.

Digging the graphics at this point, they almost look like they were sculpted in PVC or clay instead of just being a generic CG render. Hope it looks as good in game.

@bobtpooner:
Nope, he was able to in SMW if you played him in 2-player mode.

Also: KOOPA KIDS! WOOO!!

Wouldn't it be funny if they had them AND Bowser Jr. though? I was always wondering how that worked...

This game doesn't need hype to sell. All it needs to do is come out in time for the holidays and it'll ultimately outsell everything else that has come out for the past year and the year to come. Everyone loves 2D Mario, because almost everyone has played 2D Mario at least once in their lives at some point.

@Your Moms Hot Lover,

I would love to hear your reasoning why a side-scroller should be on the DS or a low budget download. I really want to know how you could possibly turn that into a reasonable statement.

@runtheplacered maybe I should make it clearer, what I'm saying is there is no way in hell I will ever buy a full price retail release that is a sidescroller that's not on a portable system or is a DL game. It's simply not worth the money to me.

Things like Shadow Complex and Splosion Man have set the bar too high. Making a sidescroller is less effort and cost for Nintendo to develop - it should be a budget title.

That's my opinion. I'm entitled to it.

Less effort? 4-player co-op and bringing back all the stuff from Mario's glory days is less of an effort to you? Well, to each his own, then...

Well said.

The Koopa Kids are finally back! Sweet.

Also, have many of you so quickly forgotten?! Those are magic scepters originally used by Kamek in SMB3, they shoot out square, circle and triangle magic attacks.

Was anyone seriously expecting Peach to be a playable character in this game when she wasn't playable in the other games like this before it aside from the USA SMB2 that wasn't truly a Mario game?

On topic... Why does Wendy O. Koopa look so angry compared to the rest of the Koopa Kids?

The new artwork is nice but frankly its only that, artwork. I have majorly serious doubts that any of the characters look like this in the actual game. To me this just looks like stuff they'd put out to make the populous excited.. and I suppose it's working
