Atlus sucks at keeping secrets.

Let me explain, in the spirit of full disclosure: I love Atlus. I also have to admit that I get the "Atlus Faithful" newsletter every so often, the latest of which ends with a little tease: "you'll absolutely love what we're getting ready to announce next week ..." Fans knew about Persona 3 FES coming stateside weeks prior to its announcement, and Colette seems to have beaten them to the punch again, bringing us a de facto announcement of Persona 4. It's on its way, and here's a 15-minute trailer to prove it.

I have to congratulate Akayuki for digging these up, as the Atlus website is totally devoid of any information on the game (since, y'know, it doesn't officially exist yet). Info on P4 is sparse, and unless you are fluent in moonspeak, this trailer isn't going to fix that.

The second half of the trailer (available after the jump) shows a bit of gameplay and some combat, both of which should seem familiar if you played Persona 3 (please do). It seems like Social Links and the tarot influences are back, and the art style and character models are instantly recognizable (Hi, Igor! Nice limo).

That being said, I'm going to reserve judgement -- as much as I loved Persona 3, which was a lot, I'd rather see a new, innovative experience than Persona 3.5. I know that Atlus is capable of innovation in a genre that most people think is stagnant, and I would hate for the bar, admirably raised, to get stuck at Social Links and persona fusion.

[Via Akayuki -- thanks Jak!]

Oh hey, I've seen this title before :3

I'm slowly getting excited about it. The game looks a lot faster than P3 (which had a brisk pace) and the combat looks like it's the same but improved (yay lifting up allies!).

Not as excited as I am about P3FES, but still intrigued.

I'm not worried that it's going to be Persona 3.5. Just because it looks similar doesn't really mean anything, DDS and Nocturne had similar visual styles and had the same basis for combat(Press Turn system), but were wildly different games.

Just because it LOOKS like they're implementing Social Links and Tarot-based things and whatever-whatever doesn't mean it's going to turn out exactly the same. I'm waiting for more info before I pass judgement.

In any case, DO FUCKING WANT.

finally sat down and watched the trailer.
can't. fucking. wait.

i'm not sold on the cast yet (is it just me or do they seem younger overall?), especially that hollow thing they come across. wtf? do not want.

If they release Personas 1 & 2 somehow, maybe over PSN, I will get a PS3. I promise.

@Gen -- good point. Don't get me wrong -- this is definitely at the top of my DO WANT list, but I don't want Atlus to get stuck in a rut.

FUN FACT: Dale North and I fought over this tip. =D

Yeah the small amount of in game stuff that was showed looked exactly like P3 on the PS2. Looks great though and I can't wait. I hope they have something big for the PS3 lined up after this.

@Pheonix -- I totally didn't see your post until now. A. I would've used your Gametrailers link. B. I wouldn't have ripped your title off. Great minds, eh? Right?

Sorry. :(

Haven't tried any Persona games yet, but hearing you guys go on about it really makes me curious, do I have to play the others to be able to enjoy P3?

no, they pretty much stand alone. i played the first a long time ago on my ps1. persona 3 bears little resemblance to the first as i remember it.

I really need to get some time to sit and play these games. They seem to be insanely loved... hopefully picking up a copy of Persona 3 won't cost me an arm & a leg these days.

Also: Spencer over at Siliconera apparently understands more Japanese than I do, and he can provide some context for the trailer: http://www.siliconera.com/2008/03/19/watch-%e2%80%93-17-minutes-of-persona-4/

All that's left now is for them to get over their "OH NOES America is afraid of Hitler and homosexuals!" thing and release Innocent Sin over here already. The fuckers.

awesome persona 3 rocked and hopefully p4 wont disappoint,i wonder if this will connect with the anime since one of the characters in it summons his persona by taking off his glasses and i do see the characters in the trailer wearing glasses
