LOL Sports: ESPN streaming to Xbox 360 soon? photo

The Xbox 360 gets some kind of new content all the time. I'm in this to play games, so I don't really pay much mind to any of the features that are added. I know that's just me, but I don't do Facebook, Twitter, or movies or anything like that on my consoles. Just games. The newest rumored addition is something I can assure you I'd never ever use.

The rumor is that there are talks of launching something called ESPN360. Users could stream live sporting events direct to their console. An anonymous source says that streams may come to the console on a per-subscriber fee, and that related interactive games could be included.

Sports fans, would you get down with this? I can't see anyone picking this over their standard delivery method. Making it a pay service would probably be even worse. Then again, if you've canceled your cable or satellite service, this would be great. What do I know? I can't even throw a football.

Not a sports fan but I can see why this would be attractive to some. Basically it's Netflix but sports. Sounds fine by me.

It kinda depends. If it's a per game basis (like pay-per-view), then it might be kinda neat. Like, if I were to move to an area where my team's games weren't show on the networks, I could just purchase the one game on the 360. It'd be cheaper than purchasing a package on DirecTV or something.

I would definitely use this. It's the same as ESPN360 on the computer, only it will stream to the tv. There are a lot of extra viewing options on the website, so it would be cool to have access on a normal tv and get games that aren't offered on cable.

Available to the UK, I wonder.

PPV would be awesome, and is what I was hoping the Sky player would have. But it didn't, so I was gutted, though if I ever decide to get Sky/Espn (ie: if the powers that be ever manage to stop the internet streaming all the footy I watch), then, living in a rented flat, through my Xbox would be the perfect form of delivery.

"ESPN360" already exists and is (until now, maybe) completely unrelated to the Xbox 360. It's basically a way for you to watch certain sports streaming live on the Internet. They probably won't be "launching" this new service but rather extending it so you can stream if off your Xbox 360 - until now, streaming was limited to computer (like, as Xzyliac said, Netflix).

The ESPN360 service actually is useful when used in conjunction with the "standard delivery service." E.g., on college football Saturdays, there are way fewer games than there are networks to broadcast games, so some games don't get televised in certain areas. When these games are really important games, I'll watch them on 360. ESPN also usually doesn't broadcast soccer (football) games that don't involve the US in the US. So it's good for that too.

Well, it's great they're adding all this stuff, but I wish they would add things I cared about. Last.fm was alright, but that's all I've used so far. FB and Tw support would have been better if I could create an account from the console, which I can't.

Give me some kind of streaming G4 content at least. Something video game/technology related. Y'know?

I think this has merit; even if with a fee associated. Let's face it; XBL isn't expensive in the least. It's 50 bucks a year and offers way more features than cable tv which runs more like 50 bucks a month. On top of that if you want special sports packages you have to pay the cable company extra for those and they usually aren't cheap. The NHL package from my cable provider costs nearly $300 on top of the regular service fee. Needless to say I have elected not to get that package. If this comes out and is even close to reasonably priced I could definitely see myself going for it.

Sounds good for people like Chaos etc who have them sorts of problems or want to stop watching poor quality net streams (I do watch them mate when United not on) I stay in a rented flat but I do get Sky/ESPN so I wouldn't downgrade to using a 360 to watch sports but can see the appeal for some.

Oh and Dale you don't throw footballs you kick them, that weird shaped thing Americans call a football is nothing of the sort, it's a rugby ball if anything. Sure some English person gonna now say that it's not a rugby ball because they ain't pussies and don't wear pads ;P

The idea behind ESPN360 as currently implemented is to give people a chance to watch sporting events that are not televised in their region or country. I've used it to watch college football and Premier League soccer, stuff like that.

It's a cool feature to offer people, so long as there is no additional cost.

Not sure how excited I should be about this. I miss the few games I'd bother watching due to not having any cable, but at the same time, I can't think of any time the Phillies, Eagles, or Flyers are broadcast on ESPN.

Get it out before the World Cup starts, however, and I will rub this all over my body.

YouTube could work too, I never thought about that. I'm not sure how they'd handle it, but it wouldn't be too difficult to implement. Maybe it could come alongside that Hulu support that has eluded us for so long.

Like you mentioned, it sounds great for people that no longer have cable, which seems to be more and more these days. I'd like to see some hockey games as they're pretty much impossible to find outside of local cable sports networks.

I'm not a sports fan so to be fair, I guess this would be great for those without access to this type of stream. I'm more concerned about the turn of focus onto our gaming consoles as a conduit for what should be primarily be broadcast on TV (and other mediums) and feel hesitant to buy into too many peripheral clutter. I realise you can choose to opt in, but it's starting to feel like a bazaar of random offerings. I feel that various medias have found a cash cow in our consoles. I'm not okay with it.

I still want PPV in the UK. Fuck paying like £40 a month for Sky and Sky Sports just to watch TV on my 360. If it was a reasonable cost to screen a single event in HD however, they would have my moneys.

My dad would like this. I have no Cable at my house so he can't watch football when he comes over.
This would solve that. Pay me money and he can stream the game.

this is a big deal.

you can already download movies and tv shows through live, with live sports, there's no reason for many people to pay for cable tv. if they can keep pricing competitive this may be a huge kick in the nuts to cable companies.

only downside is needing a $200 console in every room you wanna watch tv in, rather then paying $5-10 for each box w/ traditional cable providers.

make it a universal subscription, that works on 360, windows OS, and win mobile, and you have something interesting on your hands.

This should be free, like the current version of ESPN360 is (as others have said). Toss it in as a part of the gold subscription, and I'll be all over it...even though my college football conference already gets every game televised :-)

i agree with everything @ndschroede23 has said. ESPN360 is already a web service with a coincidental name. the "per subscriber" fee they mention is most likely not a fee that the user pays. If it follows the same model as the web channel, the fee is actually turned toward the ISP (or perhaps in this case, Msoft) where they come to an agreement about how espn will be paid for supplying this content to a set number of subscribers to microsoft's service (xbox live). this model actually got them in hot water with comcast, because they wouldn't agree to pay ESPN the amount they wanted per subscriber, but couldn't justify passing the cost to subscribers (net neutrality, etc). for a while, this meant that consumers on comcast could go to the ESPN360 site, but would be greeted with a message stating that they couldnt view content since comcast hadnt agreed to allow it (ie hadn't agreed to pay ESPN). the business model as it stands now actually lends to a description of the "reverse" of a world without net neutrality... so that is kinda interesting in an anticlimactic sort of way. i would use this if it came to xbox 360. no more cable = yes very yes.

But as a lot of people have said, extending the existing ESPN360 service to Live probably isn't a bad idea. It's like Netflix, only with live sports.

@Dale North: I'm sorry, man, but streaming Netflix is one of the best things ever. I don't watch TV because I pretty much hate TV culture today (E!, VH1, all those shows with D-grade comedians sitting in front of a camera making shitty jokes about some police videos). I get to see all these worthwhile TV shows that I would not otherwise watch because I hate TV, like 30 Rock, The IT Crowd, etc. My son gets to watch Blue's Clues, Dora, Disney movies, etc. My wife gets to watch Dirty Jobs, Law and Order, etc. No cable bill, no commercials, hundreds of options.

I know I sound like viral marketing, but I really don't know what I'd do without streaming Netflix.

Last.fm and Facebook are things I use, but the XBox apps are poorly executed. You can't do anything on the FB app except read other people's updates and make some. There really should be an option to at least upload photos from your 360/flash drive/whatever. Not being able to listen to last.fm while playing games is complete crap. They can do party chat/IM/Live Messenger no matter what you're doing; there's no excuse.

This is a good thing. The NY Times was running a story about that Fox/Time Waner spat. The reason they were fighting is Fox wanted to charge 1 dollar per subscriber for TW to carry Fox (in the old days broadcast was free for cable providers). The story went on to mention that most cable channels get about 50 cents per subscriber.

How much does ESPN get? $4.50! That's freaking huge, and I can understand while. Before I canceled my cable outright I was getting it for one reason, ESPN. If I could subscribe to it directly on my xbox for something like 5 or 10 dollars and maybe get Sport Center on demand that'd be huge. I'd take that over paying 40 or whatever TW charges me for their package of channels I could care less about.

Micrsoft has brought some interesting things to the Xbox, I particularly enjoyed Netflix but ESPN would be a coup. Cable providers should be afraid and Sony better start talking to Disney, because this is one boat they do not want to miss.
