Loads of Sonic 4: Episode 1 details hit photo

The latest issue of Game Informer has more information on Sonic 4: Episode 1 than one could possible want, with screens and an interview that should please plenty of old school fans. At least, the old school fans who aren't busy whining about Sonic's legs being too long.

Here's all the important stuff gleaned from the interview with Takashi Iizuka:

  • Episode 1 is a prologue to the main story
  • Tails and Knuckles are teased to return in Episode 2
  • Moves include: Spin Dash, Rolling Attack, Homing Attack and a fourth mystery one
  • Classic special stages will be returning
  • The graphics aren't 3D, but CG pre-renders
  • If you don't get all the Chaos Emeralds, you'll receive a classic "Try Again" ending. Getting all the emeralds results in a cliffhanger tease for Episode 2

Of the controversial Homing Attack, Iizuka says he wanted Sonic 4 to have an easy-to-play feeling, as well the ability to find "fun routes in the air." He also says that this is the return to form that "you have been waiting sixteen years for." Some bold words indeed. Very, very bold.

Tails and Knuckles are teased to return in Episode 2

...Oh shit.
I can see it now.
Episode 3: - Amy and Cream return!

Don't do it Sega.
Tails and Knuckles are fine, They're Genesis characters. Anything other is not OK.

I wonder if putting the homing attack in a 2-D Sonic was influenced by its use in the well-known ROM hack Sonic Megamix. Having played it, the homing attack adds a new dimension to the speed aspect, as you can chain enemies together in the air to build momentum and reach new areas. I hope Sonic 4 uses the technique similarly.

What Guncannon said, as long as they implement it like this I don't see why people have any reason to moan about the homing attack making an appearance.

inb4 WAH WAH SONIC CYCLE WAH!

The only thing that's missing before I decide whether I'm going to buy it is the price and how long it'll be.

how do CG renders work then? are they suggesting that the whole level is made from pre-rendered 3D models flattened into images?

"you have been waiting sixteen years for [homing attack]"

Yea, one thing I was hoping for in the genesis games was a Win Button so that I wouldn't have to think about jumping on enemies. Or anything else.

I almost hope this game sells poorly. I just want Sonic to go away.

I'm still optimistic but the homing attack and prolouge idea sound pretty weak.

The CG pre-renders bit has got me very intrigued however.

@Munkee- It works like the Donkey Kong Country games for the SNES. They basically make a sprite out of a CG image.

I am just psyched to see that Tails and Knuckles may be returning. If Sega were truly self-aware, they'd realize that these are the only secondaries anybody ever gave a shit about.

Meh. The homing attack won't be that bad, if you don't want it, then don't use it. Assuming they're using the same method from Adventure, then all you have to do is not double-tap A or X.
Other than that, Tails and Knuckles would be good, and the CG rendered graphics look great, so that's cool. I'm becoming more optimistic as this gets more information on it.

Can someone tell me how you can leave a sonic game on a cliffhanger, doesn;t there have to be a pretty deep story for players to actually give a damn and from my memmory previous sonic games had very little narrative at all.

With each bit of new information this is becoming more and more interesting, tbh I just like seeing Sonic in the news be for good or bad reasons.

Alternate Universe 2: No new playable characters, sonic fans "Man SEGA screwed everything up, it was fine in prologue, but now"
Alternate Universe 3: 34 playable characters, sonic fans are......Snowmen who vomit cotton candy and shit candy corn

As long as the homing attack isn't like Unleashed (IE homing attack an enemy 4-5 times to kill it), I'm down with that.

Technically, Amy appeared in Sonic CD on the Sega CD, so she's been around longer than Knuckles has (hard to believe). I bet you anything though, that the special "fourth move" is turning into a Rabbit so you can lift things with your ears.

And it'll be funny.

"At least, the old school fans who aren't busy whining about Sonic's legs being too long."
Which is, you know, very few. Most people are complaining about the design as a whole, among other things, but I guess you wouldn't know that, what with you being too busy singling out issues people have and oversimplifying and exagerrating them.

"Of the controversial Homing Attack, Iizuka says he wanted Sonic 4 to have an easy-to-play feeling, as well the ability to find "fun routes in the air."
The classic games were already easy to play, this is just unnecessary simplifying, and those "fun routes in the air" have never been very fun, it's just the same tired crap they've been pulling with the homing attack for a decade.

"He also says that this is the return to form that "you have been waiting sixteen years for."
It isn't.

4th Move? That 'bubble bounce' move? Super Peel out? Oh damn, peel out would make me wet myself. Though...it could just be the lame ass somersault...

I don't see why the homing attack is so controversial either. It technically WAS in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Jeeze, makes me think that some of these so called "fans" don't know what the hell they are talking about...

You want to know why this article makes me smile? Because it proves the circle of Sonic rule so thoroughly. Touting one character, telling us they're tossing in Knuckles and Tails. Giving it a shitty "story" spanning throughout (assuming that by "story" they mean anything more than a two second scripted event that happens every now and then, as it was back in the "good" Sonic days). The fucking homing attack to make gameplay "easy" (meaning that they're confused by their own design, making a game that is supposed to appeal to the people who played Sonic back when it meant something, but then catering to the moron casual gamer crowd who had every modern Sonic game to appease them).

Seriously...

SERIOUSLY...

It's over, Sonic. It's fucking over. Go die in a ditch.

I've got no quarrels with homing attack actually.
Playing through Sonic and Knuckles there are a lot of start and stop moments. Homing attacks would add an additional element to keep your momentum going or to reach secret areas in the air, which if used right can be awesome. Also, just because you use a homing attack doesn't mean it'll hit and kill the enemy. Consider that you have to time the (probably slightly delayed) homing attack appropriately, and that if the enemy relights itself on fire or raises its little coconut arms again, you'll just home into danger. So no dilemma with that. You'll want to jump for the most precision anyway.

Mostly though, I just want a run button. You know, a nice run button to hold the entire game. Like Mario. Because after I play Mario and try to play Sonic, I hold that damn button (which is Jump in Sonic) and extend all my jumps inappropriately.
