The latest issue of Game Informer has more information on Sonic 4: Episode 1 than one could possible want, with screens and an interview that should please plenty of old school fans. At least, the old school fans who aren't busy whining about Sonic's legs being too long.
Here's all the important stuff gleaned from the interview with Takashi Iizuka:
- Episode 1 is a prologue to the main story
- Tails and Knuckles are teased to return in Episode 2
- Moves include: Spin Dash, Rolling Attack, Homing Attack and a fourth mystery one
- Classic special stages will be returning
- The graphics aren't 3D, but CG pre-renders
- If you don't get all the Chaos Emeralds, you'll receive a classic "Try Again" ending. Getting all the emeralds results in a cliffhanger tease for Episode 2
Of the controversial Homing Attack, Iizuka says he wanted Sonic 4 to have an easy-to-play feeling, as well the ability to find "fun routes in the air." He also says that this is the return to form that "you have been waiting sixteen years for." Some bold words indeed. Very, very bold.

...Oh shit.
I can see it now.
Episode 3: - Amy and Cream return!
Don't do it Sega.
Tails and Knuckles are fine, They're Genesis characters. Anything other is not OK.
inb4 WAH WAH SONIC CYCLE WAH!
The only thing that's missing before I decide whether I'm going to buy it is the price and how long it'll be.
Think of it as super-detailed sprites.
Yea, one thing I was hoping for in the genesis games was a Win Button so that I wouldn't have to think about jumping on enemies. Or anything else.
I almost hope this game sells poorly. I just want Sonic to go away.
The CG pre-renders bit has got me very intrigued however.
Game still needs to evolve.
Games should evolve towards something good, not something brainless.
Not to be startin' somethin' but a prolouge is not evolution. Just sayin'.
Other than that, Tails and Knuckles would be good, and the CG rendered graphics look great, so that's cool. I'm becoming more optimistic as this gets more information on it.
Still, I'm gonna wait until I play it to judge the Homing Attack.
With each bit of new information this is becoming more and more interesting, tbh I just like seeing Sonic in the news be for good or bad reasons.
Alternate Universe 2: No new playable characters, sonic fans "Man SEGA screwed everything up, it was fine in prologue, but now"
Alternate Universe 3: 34 playable characters, sonic fans are......Snowmen who vomit cotton candy and shit candy corn
My point being, absolutely nothing.

Oh, wait, this is Sonic Team...
Technically, Amy appeared in Sonic CD on the Sega CD, so she's been around longer than Knuckles has (hard to believe). I bet you anything though, that the special "fourth move" is turning into a Rabbit so you can lift things with your ears.
And it'll be funny.
Man, this is going to be so rad. Just loike the Power Glove, right Lucas?
LOLOLOLOL, I kid, I kid. That game is terrible.
OK. From now on I'm really starting to belive in that game.
Which is, you know, very few. Most people are complaining about the design as a whole, among other things, but I guess you wouldn't know that, what with you being too busy singling out issues people have and oversimplifying and exagerrating them.
"Of the controversial Homing Attack, Iizuka says he wanted Sonic 4 to have an easy-to-play feeling, as well the ability to find "fun routes in the air."
The classic games were already easy to play, this is just unnecessary simplifying, and those "fun routes in the air" have never been very fun, it's just the same tired crap they've been pulling with the homing attack for a decade.
"He also says that this is the return to form that "you have been waiting sixteen years for."
It isn't.
I don't see why the homing attack is so controversial either. It technically WAS in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Jeeze, makes me think that some of these so called "fans" don't know what the hell they are talking about...
Seriously...
SERIOUSLY...
It's over, Sonic. It's fucking over. Go die in a ditch.
Playing through Sonic and Knuckles there are a lot of start and stop moments. Homing attacks would add an additional element to keep your momentum going or to reach secret areas in the air, which if used right can be awesome. Also, just because you use a homing attack doesn't mean it'll hit and kill the enemy. Consider that you have to time the (probably slightly delayed) homing attack appropriately, and that if the enemy relights itself on fire or raises its little coconut arms again, you'll just home into danger. So no dilemma with that. You'll want to jump for the most precision anyway.
Mostly though, I just want a run button. You know, a nice run button to hold the entire game. Like Mario. Because after I play Mario and try to play Sonic, I hold that damn button (which is Jump in Sonic) and extend all my jumps inappropriately.
(Answer: No, I am an idiot, as is anyone who takes that comment seriously.)
The hell are you smoking?
