However..
You cant make a fighting game were there's always a random chance to 1 hit kill your opponent. Because of this its rarely about skill and more about luck, and thats not gonna keep you interested for long.
I get that their trying to make it 'realistic' but that doesnt just mean making only the combat system realistic.
DW has choppy animations and sub par graphics, and numerous other issues. This all adds up into one mess of a fighting game, with a combat system with a lot of emphasis on luck and an inconsistent look and feel. The deadliest warrior games are mediocre at best.
Bushido Blade did one-hit kills back in the PS1 era. It had a niche fanbase, but you can still find fighting game fans that think warmly of it. And people who will say that there were things in it that other fighting games could have learned from.
Deadliest Warrior is just a more stereotypical fighting game with hints of Bushido Blade. DW adds a life bar, so you can both see how you are doing and chip away at opponents. DW goes with standard fighting game arenas instead of BB's "whole world" map. DW adds super moves and flashier action, and goes for graphic limb loss.
And other fighters have 1-combo kills, which at times can be seen as fairly random. Heck, from what I recall, Samurai Shodown 2's Genjuro did something like 55-60% damage with an AB slash, and it could (randomly) dizzy. And what about game winning combos and infinites that are so long, or have a tricky connection, where even skilled players sometimes fumble them? The "skill" required to land combos varies from game to game (and successfully performing them once landed is general just rote muscle memory), but winning with one is often about position, set-up, and just knowing what is acceptable and what isn't. Kind of like knowing that in Deadliest Warrior, you don't want to take a javelin to the head...
I'm not saying Deadliest Warrior is a great fighting game. But you shouldn't just reject it because it is different. Too many hardcore fighting game fans take that attitude, and I think it has limited fighting game development and innovation, as well as driven away potential new fans.
One of my favorite "guilty pleasures" so to speak.
Grab your friends, grab some beer, throw this on, then mash and laugh your way into simple bloody oblivion. It was never meant to be taken as a "serious fighting game"
... aka, sorry guys, no DW at EVO 2012 =p
