Anywho on to contest portion I prefer paid mmos over free since most free mmos i have dealt with tend to be f2p cash shop mmos which end up costing you more in the long run compared to sub based mmos.
But the other side of that coin is that you must commit. If you're no longer wanting to play, you no longer play. You can move on with a pretty small loss.
They have to pay for the server and other costs, a single pay wont cover that. You have to have a very commited community to make a single charge work.
Also most free to play games have cash shops which unbalanced the game too much.
If I were to pay, I'd feel too obligated to play it since I'm putting money into it. When I feel obligated to do something, I enjoy it less. I felt that way about XBL, and for a while, I'd think, "I paid for this subscription, I better use it." Well, at least, if I went a couple of weeks without going online (which by now must be a couple of months with college and this PS3 in my room), I begin to feel guilt over wasting money on a service I'm not constantly using. As weird as it sounds.
Crafting is cool for end-game, but I tend to just farm up cash and let other people do the crafting for me.
However it seems to be necessary to facilitate enjoymenet in the game. It feels like actual work when you get the whatever you're making. You feel accomplished.
Of course crafting isn't the only thing that leads to this problem, but that's for another discussion.
