Live Activity: Left 4 Dead not turning heads, people too busy with Halo 3 photo

You've got to love how videogame consumers reward originality. Here we have a fresh, brand new IP with an awesome gimmick and excellently implemented four-player co-op ... and people are too busy playing Halo 3 to care.

Left 4 Dead is not exactly breaking records in terms of how many people are playing it, coming in at only number seven in the Xbox Live activity chart. It has been beaten by nothing but established franchises with Halo 3, World at War, Modern Warfare, GTA IV and even Fable 2 charting ahead.

Personally, I couldn't imagine passing up wave after wave of infected for a couple of crappy Spartans, but there's no accounting for taste, I suppose. Hit the jump for this week's Live activity.

Heretic, wtf are you talking about. most people, i know at least, who consider themselves gamers, game on multiple platforms, left 4 dead isn't fucking crysis, my POS 2 year old laptop that was required for my college runs it np at decent settings.

I KNOW their are "PC elitists" that exist, yet their few and far between, at least in the manner you describe them. the only super pro PC comments that were written in this thread i saw were by you and others with similar views, who wrote them sarcastically. their are also alot of fucking retarded "360 IS LEETSAUCE" dumbfucks and same shit for sony fanboyd.

people are talking about the fucking SOFTWARE not HARDWARE and how its more for less on pc in this circumstance. pull the fucking stick out of your ass and release what is obviously being stated by people, instead of saying that they really only like PC and think everyone else is dumb, but are secretly just thinking it to themselves. which must have figured out with your over the internet mindreading powers.

No, Cube, Halo 3 is a solid title that Bungie actively supports with updates and new game variations to play. The people at Bungie know how to support their fanbase and have continued to support it to this day. That is why I will never understand why people are so against the success of this title.

I do not call what Bungie give halo 3 as support.

Hell in ut2004 alone I got all the crap halo got for free, with a stat website and I do in a lot of other pc fps that kind crap should be standard and bungie is charging people out the ass for it.

I got the packs for Free or I would not have paid for a lame little map pack with like 3 maps in it for $10.

That is not support to me, maybe to people who don't know any better it is But I do not call it that. I call it a rip off.

Its been done and done better and longer elsewhere even by valve.

I'm just confused as to why people keep saying that L4D is "better" on PC.
I bought it for PC despite having a 360, simply because all of my friends are playing on PC.
I have also played it for 360, and have it to be... the same game. An awesome game, but the SAME game.

sooooo............ how about everyone quit whining and eat a dick?

cube, not going to say much about the map packs, seeing as they will be free eventually and you don't have to buy them. Plus, if you want to play online, it's not needed to buy them. When the heroic map pack came out I didn't buy it, I could still play online, there was a DLC map playlist specifically just for the new maps. And you know what? when the new maps were free, thats when bungie incorporated them into regular matchmaking, so I don't see the arguement for the DLC map pricing.

secondly, bungie is probably one of the best developer teams out there in terms of being in tune with their community. They constantly have special playlists, every holiday we get a special mode and nearly every weekend a double exp playlist. Also, when team swat was so popular as a double exp playlist, bungie made it a permanent playlist, same with team snipers, don't tell me thats not cool?

lastly, they constantly highlight great user created content. If you ever checked out 'bungie favorites' in the pause menu, you'll see pics, videos and maps all from the community there.

I agree that it is paled by PC gaming, but can you really deny the support bungie has given halo 3 and the potential the game itself has? user mods you say? yeah halo 3 has forge and although it is very limited and no where near as good as PC modding tools, there are still some amazing maps out there.

It's useless to be pissed about this.

We all know that Halo has dominated the online landscape since Halo 2 first came out. Hell, it wasn't until Gears of War came out that Halo 2 finally was knocked from the top spot, only to take it back not long afterward. Being mad about something that is inevitable is just stupid, sorry to put it so bluntly.

As frankly, as much as I want to own L4D already, it shouldn't be rewarded just because it's "fresh" and "innovative." Believe it or not Jim, there is such thing as taste and opinion, and some people DO prefer Halo to L4D. Calling people idiots for something that they have every right to do isn't going to change anything, so you're only hurting yourself by insulting them.

And one last point:

It's hard to compare ANYTHING to Halo 3. It's sold 8 million copies worldwide. Not even Gears 2 surpassed it, so it's no surprise that L4D didn't, either. Not being a Halo freak or anything, but it's hard to argue against those type of numbers.

Basically, L4D on 360 just doesn't have replayability and the PC version doesn't really either. When more maps are made and people really tweak the game to their liking, it will be replayable. But everyone has beat the 4 stories and I'm just waiting for something new...

Why wouldn't Valve support the 360? It'd be stupid not to. How are they "catering" to 360 owners? Some of you guys are fucking retarded for PC nerds. The 360 is a fucking PC made for gaming. Valve can make shitloads of money with very little extra work and not having to worry about people pirating shit. Valve is awesome, L4d is awesome.

THEY HAVE NO TASTE BECAUSE THEY PICKED A BALANCED SHOOTER OVER A CO-OP GAME WITH 4 MAPS.

I didn't pass up L4D, I picked it up on launch, had a blast, for about 2 weeks. At that point I had run through all the episodes numerous times, to the point where I could predict where the SUPER SCARY A.I director was going to place the enemies.

The game is good, a bit frustrating when your team sucks but good but its far to little content, I would have preferred a huge delay for the 360 version if it meant more content, hell there's only 2 VS maps and all we have from Valve is a promise they'll support it, even if its true, when its the content coming?

March? Maybe summer? Yea, Valve is mighty, can do no wrong, blablafuckingbla, but 4 maps is just to little. Same with weapon selection, pistols, 2 shotgun types, an assault rifle and a hunting rifle.

I liked the game for those 2 weeks but I doubt I'll be picking it up again unless more content is released and I sure as shit hope its not just one map they give us.

For now my L4D copy is on its way to New York and Tales of Vesperia is being shipped to me.

Also, fuck expert. Turns into a fun co-op experience in a job.

More interesting is the question how it fared over at Steam? Is this more played than TF2 or CounterStrike?

Also in reality L4D is kind of a niche hardcore title and doesn't have the incredible casual appeal as Halo or Gears.

so... many... flames...

srsly tho- How many units of Halo 3 have been sold compared to L4D? does L4D have vehicles? Other Gameplay Modes like CTF or GrifBall? how many map packs have been released for L4D? L4D has a solid Co-Op experience over four 60-90 minute campaigns. there's an AI director (which means Tank every ten minute). don't get me wrong, I LOVE L4D, and how much simple fun it is with co-op and VS. modes, but it's chinese take-out in game form, interesting and tangy, but hungry for more after an hour.

I haven't played Halo 3 in awhile though, and I'm assuming its rise to the top is due to CoD fans divided between franchises.

Nobody gives a shit. Just play your fucking games, and let console gamers play their fucking games, and just shut the fuck up about it. You're idiots.

Yes, Valve is a PC company, but the 360 version of L4D is 100% just as functional as the PC verson. The only -- yes, ONLY -- objective advantage it has over the console port is the accessibility for modders. Stop being goddamn dicks. Some of us just prefer consoles. Your version is not better than ours. Fuck off, you whiny, cocksucking assholes.

Anyone, with that out of my system, let me just say that this is why I'm fucking fed up with Halo and its fans. Why -- WHY -- in God's name would you continually play Halo 3, when you have Gears 2, L4D, Call of Duty, and not to mention tons of great single-player games, to choose from? Are you that boring and unimaginative?

Now, let me clarify: I am not trying to bash Halo 3. Halo 3 is a relatively solid FPS. However, it is also about as vanilla as it gets. Average characters walking around average environments shooting average weapons at one another. It's okay for a while. I used to enjoy it. But it got old. I started playing other, better games. I think it's fine if you're a fan of it, but play something else. Broaden your horizons. There so many more interesting games out there. You're missing out.

L4D being slightly lower on XBL does make sense as most of the L4D fanbase will be playing on PC when most of them are not in here gloating over how awesome they have convinced themselves that they are.

I bought Orange Box on 360 and enjoyed Portal a lot, and that was about it. TF2 did end up sucking on there and I bought it on PC and it was great.
As of right now I don't think that will be the case with L4D though. TF2 sucked on the console from the beginning IMO. It did seem like Valve just quickly threw Orange Box to the consoles for a quick buck. L4D doesn't seem that way to me right now. Its a solid game that I have had HOURS of consistent fun with on 360. I think that there was a little more effort put into making L4D work both ways which tells me that the updates may go both ways too.

However if that is not the case and consoles get the shaft then I will probably end up spending money to play it on PC at some point. :(

Left 4 Dead isn't eactly breaking records on PC either. Yesterday it peaked at around 19,000 players. I wouldn't have expected it to be showing numbers like lowest common denominator Halo anyway, but I can see it dropping much further in the next month or so due to the lack of content.

Co-op gets pretty uninteresting after a few rounds of Versus, which only has 2 campaigns available and don't last long as it is.

@Parparking: Yesterday L4D was 4th on Steam stats, behind Counterstrike:Source, Counterstrike and Football Manager 2009. TF2 only seems to have around 10,000 players at peak when I've checked. Steam Stats even gives you numbers and everything!

@ Sharpless

Believe it or not, there are people out there that think Halo is better than any of the games you listed, and that's why they still play it over those games. It's in your full right to say that people should play other games, and sometimes they do. However, like I said in my other post, it's all about taste. Some people enjoy continuous games of Halo, and if that's what makes them happy, then LET THEM BE.

I don't understand all this bashing. Honestly, if they feel that they aren't missing out, then you shouldn't feel like that for them. I'm just trying to say that you're wasting you're time complaining about something that isn't going to change for at least the next year or so (with Halo 3: Recon [i hate ODST] and the Mythic Map Pack coming out).

Again, it's in your full rights to bitch about Halo and people continuously playing it, but doing so isn't really going to change much, so I suggest just moving on and letting everyone be.

Has anyone put 2 and 2 together and figured out that Left 4 Dead maybe just isn't that good to begin with?! Anyone who does own it for 360 has probably beaten the game since its far too short, the game itself isnt graphically impressive by any means (borderline last-gen), the controls are mediocre, and the gameplay is very repetative. And everyone creams themselves over the whole 'four player co-op!' thing... News Flash : Halo 3 has four player coop too.

Its like I said before the game launched, Left 4 Dead is a game everyones going to forget in a month or two because its not that good.

Overpriced game is overpriced.

I didn't even bother to buy L4D on 360 until the Amazon sale. Great game sure, but it's just multi and that's still considered an extra feature in my mind. So if that's all you've got then you better bring TONS of content. Which L4D didn't have. So $40 I think was the perfect price and I jumped on it.

Nevermind that it's a Valve game and should primarily be bought on PC anyway. I'm gonna trade in this 360 copy once my friends stop playing. Hopefully I won't lose any cash on the trade for the PC version.

I think a lot of people just don't understand the "Halo phemenon." Yes its a good game, but its fallen into the realm of a Madden game for me. The whole line "duudddeee you have to get it, its Madden," just replace Madden with Halo and you get what I'm driving at. Its got, IMO, the biggest hype train behind it, more than any other game to date. Thats not to say the game isn't good, because it is, but is it really that good?? Is it better than getting a good lay? I highly doubt it. But "dude you have to play it, its Halo" doesn't hold up anymore. I don't get the appeal anymore, I really don't.

And here I thought console developers spread the word that PC gaming is dead? Didn't you all get the memo? *sarcasim*

I think its great Valve is brining their amazing games to wider audience that otherwise wouldn't have the chance to play them. Orange Box was a step in the right direction, even if Halo fans don't really appreciate it (or L4D) like PC gamers do. They are just looking for different experiences basically, but they don't speak for all 360 owners...

As far as free PC mods/support goes, thanks Valve! I <3 U!

I think a big part of this is that Valve products are much more superior on PC than a console. For example, TF2 is better to own on the PC than 360 mainly because the updates are more often, quicker, and free. With how much Valve sends out patches with maps and other additions, owning the 360 copy is not the way to go.

Why do people feel the need to:

--Shit on others for buying a game on a platform they don't personally prefer

--Shit on others for playing a game that they don't personally enjoy.

Gaming has become like music, where everyone has to crap on what everyone else likes. The only justification you need for playing a game is that you LIKE IT. That's all that matters.

I don't give a shit what other people choose to play. I don't give a shit what platform they prefer.

I don't see how anyone could feel any other way about it, honestly.

Somebody please explain to me why it personally matters to you what game someone you don't even know is playing, or what platform they're playing it on.
