Live Activity: Left 4 Dead not turning heads, people too busy with Halo 3 photo
     Left 4 Dead

You've got to love how videogame consumers reward originality. Here we have a fresh, brand new IP with an awesome gimmick and excellently implemented four-player co-op ... and people are too busy playing Halo 3 to care.

Left 4 Dead is not exactly breaking records in terms of how many people are playing it, coming in at only number seven in the Xbox Live activity chart. It has been beaten by nothing but established franchises with Halo 3, World at War, Modern Warfare, GTA IV and even Fable 2 charting ahead.

Personally, I couldn't imagine passing up wave after wave of infected for a couple of crappy Spartans, but there's no accounting for taste, I suppose. Hit the jump for this week's Live activity.

I would be contributing to the Left4Dead stat, however my 360 had major heart failure 15 minutes into my first session with the game, which I had bought that day. I have never been so pissed off at an inanimate object as just then. Damn you freezybox, damn you to hell!!!!!

also out of warranty cocks

Also, I don't understand why people choose COD4 over the new Socom.

Oh, here come the PC elitists again. Ugh.

Actually, nabbing the seventh spot is pretty good position for L4D. It is a new IP which probably did not pop up on people's radar until the demo was released.

Also, there were a lot of Halo 3 BF sales in various stores so that likely had an impact on the activity chart.

anyone who purchased orange box for 360 should have realized by know its much better to buy any valve game for your PC, unless you feel like never being able get the updates they constantly release or being forced to pay for the free additional content they released . . . months and months and . . . later

If my home pc could run left 4 dead properly then I would have grabbed it for that. I however was forced to pick it up on the 360. It controls great for a console shooter though IMO. I can't believe GTA is still up there though, I guess I still have time to get those online achievements I haven't grabbed yet.

Its sad that this world is filled with idiots. Halo is mediocre at best with the rest of the FPS genre that hasn't changed since Wolfenstein and Doom. Same goes for Madden.

But people don't like challenges, and L4D is a challenging game. Its like an arcade shooter. So people need to get over it and play this awesome game.

All of those new 360 sales, each and every month are getting Halo 3 when they buy their new systems. It only makes sense in a way.

Personally I'm more surprised that Gears2 hasn't overtaken Halo3.

Dunno why anyone would buy it on 360 anyway. I wish Valve would stop trying to cater to consoles. They've got the 2nd most dedicated fanbase on PC, after blizzard. We'll make sure they always stay in business, as long as they always show us fantastic support and eternally free patches and DLC for their games.

I don't get why people get offended when the PC *does* have more/better features. Valve has been far better at supporting its PC gamers with free DLC for TF2 and mods for Hl2/Portal. The same thing is true of Fallout 3 due to the modding kit that was used to make amazing things in Oblivion.

I'm not really surprised. Really, it just shows how loyal Halo 3 fans are, or how resistant they are to trying new things, depending on your perspective.

Look at it this way:

CoD fans are split in two now, as some have obviously moved on to WaW while others have stayed behind with Infinity Ward's offering. Before the new CoD, CoD 4 was dominating (from what I remember) this list.

A lot of GTA IV players have probably found other games, whether they be Saints Row 2 (even though it doesn't appear on this list), or whatever. Maybe even the new Madden.

You can tell that the Valve fans have mostly moved on to L4D, as the Orange Box is gone now.

Halo 3 is at the top spot simply because Halo 3 players are refusing to move on to a new game.

I don't see how halo 3 beating it out in playtime is such a big deal... first of all, more people own halo 3 than L4D, given the fact L4D has barely been out a month. Secondly, the majority of 360 gamers are competitive and halo 3 is competitive, with it's persistent stat tracking and ranking system, L4D is more about a laid back session just relaxing having fun killing zombies. Most people with L4D have it on PC as well. Anyways, I like both Halo 3 and L4D and I have been playing L4D way more, I don't see how not having L4D on the top of the charts is like the sign of the apocalypse for you people. I mean, will the fact that more people play Halo 3 than L4D on XBL damper your enjoyment of L4D? no. sometimes, even the dtoid staff needs to STFUAJPG.

I mean what do you expect. When valve gives barely anemic support to their multiplayer only affair last year with orange box, what idiot in their right mind would even bother buying the game when its more expensive on xbox, with less players playing. Not to mention any one who paid full retail for a multiplayer only game with 4 maps is the real idiot. Left 4 dead is fun, and granted it is an original IP, but barely an original game design.

I don't think any of us are bashing the 360. We're bashing valve's decision to support the 360. It's not their market. Valve's practices just don't work out on console. That's how it is.

In the meantime, the 360 fanboys can now stop being so defensive.

Heretic: What are you, twelve years old? Valve products are simply better on PC.

PC TF2: Updates, maps, mods, weapons, more servers, more people, more people per server, etc.

360 TF2: NONE OF THAT

Its just the facts, man. Don't get bent out of shape with your weak-ass sarcasm is you can't accept it.

And yes, I have Left 4 Dead on 360 because I get better framerate and already have a mic for it.

Let people play what they want, the majority of people who have L4D bought it for PC anyway.

Oh, lets compare an FPS that's better on PC to a console game that has sold millions.

Why did you even bother writing this?

It's true that most players with access to a gaming PC and a 360 should get the PC version, especially seeing as TF2 DLC has still not arrived on 360.

I do not have a PC equipped for gaming, and I also prefer to game on the couch with a controller in hand, so I sadly do not have the choice. I refused to pay $60 for a game with 4 maps, but when I saw the chance to snag it for $40, off of Amazon black friday, I ordered a copy.

Anyway, I'm more interested in xbox live stats the week or two after xmas, because many gamers with limited incomes may have wishlist'd L4D if buying it outright wasn't an option.
grafkhun's Avatar
grafkhun at 12/02/2008 21:53
@heretic- you really think L4D will be forgetten in 2 months? maybe for some, but I know I'll be playing it for a long time to come. Sure it has 4 maps and 2 modes, but it's so god damn fun, I can replay it over and over.

"THAT'S why I hate PC gamers not because they get better version but because every time Valve releases a new game they get a massive erection and won't STFUAJPG." they cum all over their keyboards when something from blizzard is released then?

"In the meantime, the 360 fanboys can now stop being so defensive."

That is where you lost me. Valve needa to give better support both the PS3 and 360 . There is a good market there for people who would love a solid FPS experience. Valve is good company that should try to branch out to the consoles because not every one can have good gaming rigs.

I don't care if I have to pay for updates. Remember, the only reason why that type of content is free is because Valve wants to give incentive for people to use the Steam store and program. It is also their servers supporting the updates and not someone's responsibility. That and PC gamers have a strong sense of entitlement and believe that all of their extra content should be free despite the work that goes into it. See 402's post on the COD 4 Map Pack for a sample of this.

I like FPS games on the PC. I played FEAR and UT 2004 on the PC and I had a lot of fun with them. So, don't assume that I don't like the PC as a gaming platform and I like Steam as well.

I think many people dont buy games for PC seeing not everytone upgrades their computers for playing them. Is just some common logic to think a console would run it better since it was designed to play games on it still when it could be the other way around for a much better experience.
Arttemis's Avatar
Arttemis at 12/02/2008 22:16
Just as sideburns said, if you have access to a 360 and a gaming PC, it's clear that the PC version will be superior in many ways which make it a better choice.

Pointing out this information in a thread (read: the one you're reading now) that highlights player-count statistics on the limited platform isn't elitist, nor is it trolling.

Going to people's blogs and negatively repeating this information would be.

As for L4D's longevity, I definitely can see it have a strong online PC following in the same sense CS and TF2 do.
