It's satire, it's meant to be funny. I thought it was hilariously awesome. I don't see what the problem is here. It's really depressing that there are people who actually took this seriously.
You know that Zelda fan film? The one Nintendo shut down? Yeah that actually released and wasn't good...
If it IS a joke, then it worked.

That said, I do think Apokelypse is funny, and it's been great at inspiring conversation. I have zero complaints about the video itself. It's what the video represents to me personally that I have some issue with.
Otherwise I'd be totally happy to see this as "Pokemon's gritty future" where battles are sort of outlawed and have become like cockfights and organizations like team rocket are much more evil then they are in the games/cartoons. Even having Ash be at his wits end and deciding he needs to join team rocket because the things he's done seem to mean nothing in the world he's saved a million times is a nice twist.. Idk.. it could work if the pokemon were just done better.
Death Troopers
Hilarious trailer, though. Loved it.
Perhaps you could even interpret it as a satire on how Hollywood (and incidentally fan filmmakers) attempt to turn an inherently cheesy IPs into something to be taken with a degree seriousness.
Of course you can... in fact all of those sound pretty cool and would be a much needed shot of originality for the 2 franchises you listed which are endlessly repetitive and derivative (starwars and pokemon).
You say they'd be "losing the essence" but really dont you mean "losing the same old boring shit they've done a thousand times to milk their cashcow"?

They're, y'know, being ironic, and it's only true love and understanding of the source material that can do that. I mean, Mewtwo is making Officer Jenny shoot herself in the head! Brock has his eyes closed and face bandages! The production values are high because they are professional and love their work.
Taken from the article: "[The trailer] really shows you fan fiction has taken huge strides since the days of silly handy-cam movies that look like Bob Sagat should be narrating them."
