No, I'm not being smarmy and showing you footage of the movie Goldeneye. Rather, Zac Kroger and some friends put together this tribute to the awesomeness that was Goldeneye 64, a game that will take 6 years to come out on the Virtual Console. I think they did a wonderful job with this video, as their firing skills truly capture what it was like playing the game for the first time on the N64, or if you play Red Steel at any point.

We all know its crap, but it was awesome at the time. It has a special place in our hearts.

BTW Road Rash sucked out of control... fun but sucked out of control.

I too have very fond memories of Goldeneye. If they tweaked the controls and made it online multiplayer for the VC, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

That is awsome.... I've personally been pondering a Gears of War type of real life movie thing... Look fun to do.

The rampant misuse of "smarmy" since Jaffe's 1up interview drives me crazy. Just because Jaffe thinks smarmy means "smart ass" doesn't mean the rest of the English speaking world should.

For the rest of us:
smarm•y [smahr-mee]
–adjective
excessively or unctuously flattering, ingratiating, servile, etc.

I never read Jaffe's 1up interview, so I've just been using wrong the entirety of my life. Thanks, HarrasmentPanda.

Funny video, alright. To be honest, I didn't really like goldeneye that much at the time. The controls still bugged me then, even fucking turok had better. No denying the impact it had on the FPS, though. Also, don't hold your breath for goldeneye EVER coming on the VC. Rare is microsoft's bitch now, remember.

@Dick McVengeance

No problem. I didn't mean to come across like a dick. If I did, sorry. You guys do great work on this site. But, what I like to call the "smarmy pandemic" has pushed me over the edge lately.

Alas, those who believe this game is crap have not played 4-player in a while. Sure the graphics are not cool (and the Lag!) but the ability to turn to your friend and call him a "shitcock" for rocket-launching you is still awesome.

This was good stuff. My favorite was how they did the goofy "ow I got shot in my hand" animations.

And I'm in the minority I think... This game was great for it's time, but I have no desire to ever play it again. Even if they revamped the controls, upped the graphics, and gave it online multiplayer, I doubt it'd be as good as it was back then.

I think GoldenEye was the game that got me interested in gaming when I was little. I used to play it for hours with my brother and Dad. Very good video though. Loved the original sound effects and actions. lol

About a year ago, I hooked up my old 64 and decided to play some Goldeneye. We hadn't played it in years, and we were psyched. And then we started playing, and... instant disappointment. I didn't really mind the ugly graphics; it was the awkward controls, the poor framerate, the general slowness of the game, the poor animation, the way you spawn without a weapon. Perfect dark was even worse in some ways, with it's incredibly slow framerate and annoying blur effects that make it hard to see and last even after you die and come back.

A lot of 64 games really still hold up well today; Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, The Legend of Zelda games, and Starfox 64 are still fun, and to this day I warm up Super Smash Brothers every so often to play some 3 or 4-player deathmatch. Goldeneye, unfortunately, hasn't aged so well.

If you still long for some old-school Goldeneye action, give Goldeneye Source a shot. It's still in beta and has its share of bugs and balancing problems, but it does a remarkably good job of capturing Goldeneye's vibe while making it suprisingly playable for people who've played games like Serious Sam, Half-Life 2 and FEAR.
