LittleBigPlanet: Some IP owners don't mind people portraying their stuff photo

Sadly, the majority of creators in LittleBigPlanet are still struggling with the notion of designing levels with unique concepts in mind. Media Molecule tries to keep it simple with moderation – create a level that is yours, without penises, Mario or some combination of the two. Penises aren’t trademarked (they're just rude), but Mario is and Media Molecule is just trying to protect its backside from lawsuits.

In a recent interview with IGN (via Kotaku), MM co-founder Alex Evans said that not all IP owners are up in arms over users recreating their assets. In fact, some IP holders are more than happy to let users favorably represent their stuff.
...the other point is the number of IP owners who came up to us and said please whitelist us – we'll never ever ask you to pull infringing stuff. I can't say who that is, but those two things really shocked me, I think it shocked [the IP holders], who were like, hang on, my IP's being represented and it's being represented really well. The IP holders have to have last say over the representation of their brand, and that's fair enough, so we've always got to have a method for people misusing a brand, but what's been really lovely is how well represented so many brands are.
I wonder if, as LBP ages, we’ll get a list of properties that we can mess with? Or should I say, favorably mess with?

Finally, Media Molecule not being dicks.

Uh, garison, they weren't being dicks. They were trying to avoid being sued, and now that they might have permission from certain IP holders, they can go forward.

This is exactly how more IP holders should react. It's free advertising!

Maybe they should publish this 'whitelist' on their website. Along with a 'greedlist' of publishers who want everything to do with their product banned from fair use in case they want to sell overpriced shit.

I'm just glad moderation was fixed. I mean, people called MM dicks for just deleting shit, but I doubt that's what happened. I'm sure some IP holder was like "Take that shit down!" And MM was like "Oh crap, can you give us a chance to tweak our moderating system? It needs work." And they were like, "No, we want it off now!"

So they had to delete it and everyone got mad. Grant it, they should have had a better system, but I'm just glad they give you a chance to fix your stuff now - at least according to the update. I've never had a moderation issue. I'm actually having more fun just making my own shit up.

Either way, they should find a way to get that white-list to the public so folks know what is safe.

If they displayed the whitelist, I am sure some people would specifically use those IP, with cocks. And the IP owner will have to ask to be removed from that whitelist. Some people just love penises.

You guys realize not many levels were taken down during Sackgate, right?

That got blown amazingly out of proportion, seeing as how the day the floodgates broke, most of the levels on the "Cool Levels" world were based off IPs.

I'm glad Destructoid didn't sue me for making that level.

The Spiderman ones are pretty cool but those that are cool supremely outnumber those that suck.

@garison: trying to prevent your company from facing litigation (that means "lawsuits") is dickishness?

That being said, people need to focus on creative content, instead of continually remaking mario and sonic.

Does it actually say they're going to let people use whitelisted IPs, or was this just to let us know there are companies out there that don't protest? I don't like reading stuffs

I'm disgusted that this had to occur as some revelation to Media Molecule by ACTUAL IP OWNERS, and not their own patrons who paid for their product and used it completely within the rights of Fair Use.

Yess!!! I knew that things would pull through for LBP. This game's too big and innovative to be held down by political copyright bs. I was sad when they started moderating and removing the mario, batman, etc.. levels. Hopefully, this will change things for the future of LBP. Granted, I would prefer to make a level that's not based on anything but I get enjoyment out some of the games that people put together when using movie or video game material.

I hope a lot of IP holders join the bandwagon. There's nothing like seeing your favorite franchise re created in LBP.
