LittleBigPlanet really hasn't had a lot of luck. Having got over its delay, the latest hurdle facing the PS3's crown jewel is a mass of online problems, including level theft, trophy whoring and broken or unfinished uploads. It doesn't help that the servers have been struggling to cope as well.
In fact, the problems are so great that LBP's online mode has been pulled. The official reason for this is being stated as "glitching issues" which are apparently affecting offline play. All we know at the moment is that Media Molecule is working hard to fix the problems.
Wow, really bad news for what is Sony's biggest exclusives of the generation this far. A week's delay, controversy, a load of bugs and abuse and now a server pull. Smooth sailing this has not been.

Halo 3 had very few problems at launch. Why the hell is every PS3 online launch so damn crappy? LBP was lagging my OFFLINE game because it was trying to get score/level/gamer updates during gameplay. Things got so bad that I just gave up for the night.
Beta testing my ass. I still love LBP though :)
The smoothest release with online functionality that i remember? The Burning Crusade expansion. It was so not broken when it released, so far as server issues. Or at the least, less broken than anyone could have ever expected.
But there's always this same launch day onlien problem with these consoles . . . strange that.
Level stealing is an issue as there are already 2 levels that are the same by 2 different people and they are not the person who 1st created the level during the beta period.
I guess I am just make some levels with my GF until this smooths over.
Is the Castle Crashers issue fixed yet, patched? I remember that there were random disconnects, save games getting deleted, very laggy co-op right at launch. The big issue last year with Live at the holidays, remember that, your paid service? I played WOW in its infancy and this is nothing compared to what like that was like for months. It goes both ways, its not just Sony, its MS, its Blizzard, it just happens that it has been more Sony recently with some of their exclusive games.
Companies never "over" do anything, in fact they do the bare minimum to turn the highest profit. If they have to scramble later on to fix stuff they do that. Why? Because there is a chance they won't have to do that. This little hicup won't change LBP's mass appeal. I've been saying this on other people's blogs all week, I didn't expect the servers to be 100% reliable at launch. Why? Because a game with this much appeal its to be expected. Yes in a perfect gaming world where we all get along, everyone loves eachother, and companies over-do everything in the sake of making sure a game works perfectly at launch this wouldn't be an issue. But since that shit isn't ever going to happen you have to deal with it. In a few days or maybe a week this won't be an issue anymore or at least it shouldn't be.
I agree, I dont think this mishap will not affect the appeal. Very true statement. Let me further say that im really upset BECAUSE I am anxious to get this title.
That said, I know companies do as little as possible to make the highest profit. They make games like ALONE IN THE DARK for the 360/PS3. Not LBP. I will agree with you that servers arent always st 100%. But why did I love playing Halo 3 online launch night? Gears of war? CoD4(360)? They key there being that thier servers were somewhat ready for the load. Althought they had the difficulty during last winter that is attributed to all the extra time people had around the christmas holidays. This is not the case here. And you mean to tell me that they didnt cover thier asses cuz of profit to potentially fix a map-stealing bug? Thats pretty harsh. Wouldnt you say?
Is that LBP's problem? Maybe. But you have to ask the question, at some point, of why PS3 is losing exclusivity to its titles? Do you think youll ever see Gears on PS3? Nope. But now you can buy GTA 4, and will be able to get FF13 on Xbox. Thats no coincidence. Its because game studios go with the system that SELLS GAMES. Like Halo and Gears, which have solid online launch play. Not saying that LBP isnt going to move games and consoles, but for a HUGE title for PS3's sake, youd think they would try o get it right before they put it out. Or at least make it safe to not map steal. Thats all im saying.
Bioshock anyone? Halo is a property of microsoft isn't it so of course that's not jumping ships whereas the playstation as historically relied much more heavily upon 3rd party software and given the times it makes more sense to be multiplatform. So now that the ps3 is picking up steam and doing well enough you will start to see those ol xbox IP start to become multiplatform as well atleast if it makes sense to. There are few IPs from the xbox that would make a nice home on the playstation and given the fanboyism of their devs (fable i'm looking at you) you aren't too likely to see them switch.
Well said, but my point wasnt at IPs in gerneral. My point was quality online play. Take the fact that I want Fallout 3, and thought about getting it seeing hows theres no online mode. But what swayed me to Xbox.. honestly, I wanted the achievement points. Because ive already got some, they are established to where I can measure them up with my friends on XboxLive, and the fact that I have friends on an online medium to compare my acheivements to. PSN? Not so much. Sure, ive bothered with some friends, but to enable trophys this late in the game, and not even make them retro-active. So I have to go back and redo all the shit ive already done on my PS3 games to get them? No thanks. Waste of my time.
Even something that doesnt have to do with clogged servers loses PS3 money because they are getting intoduced into the vast server-heavy world of online demand.
The laggy server issue sucks but how many of you roughed through it because the game is just THAT GOOD (When it's working)!
If the game mediocre and servers were laggy, it wouldn't be headline on every gaming blog. We all just want to get back to exploring LBP. Besides, there's still much to do in the offline mode.
I don't really care about exclusive titles and who's system they are on, that's fanboy shit there. And in case you didn't know there was an article here yesterday Link, about some interesting software sales. It's definatly not the end all be all of the numbers game in any case and yes the Konami stat is skewed because of MGS4, but it shows an interesting take on where software game company's revenue comes from. Losing exclusive titles doesn't concern me in the least, it lets the developers maximize their profits which means better games for all.
There was something interesting I remember about what some survival guy said, "when gathering firewood for the night, get what you think you need then multiply it by 5." I think when estimating server needs for games like this use that same rule, take what you think you need then multiply it by 5.
wow.. talk about ps3 angst..
btw, do we have to keep bringing up the fact that Live was having MAJOR issues last holiday season? imo the worst time eva to have problems. hehe.
like others have said; its not just sony or microsoft, its almost every game w/an online component lately that is highly anticipated. i've come to the point where i expect server issues w/a games release if its popular.
I really like LBP. I played WoW for 2 years, and I was around when Steam first launched. Major server problems all around.
Customers shouldn't expect online functionality to be broken on Day 1. Especially when you have something really cool that could push holiday system sales.
We'll all forgive and forget, but I wish companies would actually use their exclusive betas to stress test their servers, and not just build hype for their game.
Well, lets all hope they get it fixed soon. My online explorations yesterday were amazing and I was looking forward to jumping back in!
Bad news, not for gamers but for Sony, who is the one losing money because of this.
Not sure what you're getting at but they didn't pull the online modes for any of those games, Castle Crashers is buggy, Fable 2 co-op is shit and Soul Calibur, well its a fighting game and I've never played a fighting game with a decent netcode.
But you can still play them online.
This is just fucked up, big title, Sony should have known better.
BUT ITS FREE SO DON'T BITCH GUYS.
As far as trophies being very VERY late...yes, I agree. I thought the APs on the 360 were going to be dopey before it was released, but I've become an AP whore who loves to see I have higher scores than my friends...But making trophies retro-active is asking quite a bit. I mean, If I recover my gamertag, I still have my overall score, but individual achivements need to be re-achieved...
But Sony has had, and still does have some insanely great at fantastic first party IPs, as well as the in house devs to create beautiful games. I mean, at least for me, most of what is out on the PS that I want to play are first party games.
I couldn't tell if the "it's free so don't bitch' line was supposed to be sarcastic or not...I hope it was, because the 'it's free' line is getting stale. Especially when the PSN adds a feature, like XMB, that has been available on XBL for years, and the PS3 guys go bonkers about how it's so awesome and just as good as XBL are losing the legs to stand on about since it is free we can't complain.
Either it's awesome, and free, or it is mediocre because it's free. Sure the Christmas breakdown of XBL sucked...And the intermittant issues this year have been annoying. But since I've had my XBL account over the last 6 years, the issues have been few and far between when it comes to reliability.
Gotta pick a side and stick with it...
AND finally, choosing PS3 or 360 with Fallout 3 should be no hard choice if you own both systems...Exclusive DLC (if you have an XBL tag) should be the 'no brainer'. Extra content that you won't see on another console would sway me...(along with the FPS-esque play suits the 360 controller for me better than the DS 3).
It's very nice to meet you.
