LittleBigPlanet sales are lacking, Sackboy develops a drinking problem photo

Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet is not experiencing the consumer impact that Sony was hoping it would. According to a Gamasutra report, the quirky platformer sold a meager 141,000 units this November in the US. This places it outside the top 20 games sold overall and just fourth on the list of Playstation 3 titles in the month of November.

Contrast this with the 215,000 units sold in October and it appears as though Sony may have a LittleBigProblem on its hands. LBP simply isn’t selling as well as it should. The critical reception of the game has been stellar thus far. It currently has a Metacritic average of 95 out of 100.

We’re interested in your take on this. Are LBP’s low numbers attributable to the poor sales of Sony’s console in November? Does this have something to do with the zany marketing campaign for the game and how it really doesn’t speak to what LBP actually is? Also, what did I have for lunch this afternoon?

The game is fantastic but they need to address the online issues faster than they have been. Only just a few days ago did they really make any changes that showed improvement over their rather shortsighted layout.

It really saddens me to see such an incredible outlet for creativity being stifled by online problems. :(

My guess: People don't understand what exactly the game is, PS3 users and others alike. And a lot of those who do are already tied to another console or PC and, despite seeing the promise in the title, aren't willing to take the full plunge. I'm one of the former, although admittedly I've been putting this game off as a Gmod for the console masses, that's essentially what makes this game so great. Still havn't had a chance to play it myself but I'm looking forward to it.

I think this is a classic case of the Psychonauts.

it seems like originality is punished these days. I mean if Sackboy was replaced with a Space marine I bet it'll sell better.

When they first announced this game, everybody said, "I'm surprised; this looks like something that'd come out for the Wii." And indeed, if it had, I bet it would be selling fives times as much.

Still, several hundred thousand copies sold in the first two months is not bad, it's just not the smash hit they were betting on.

1) Stupid online issues have plagued it since release.
2) They pandered to the non-existent Muslim 'backlash' when they should've just released the damn thing.
3) Advertising has been shocking slow to start, I didn't see it on Tv at all until a week ago...

The way I see it, LittleBigPlanet's problem is that its essentially just a giant level editor and not much of a game. The game's amount of content, good graphics and charming art style and music just isn't enough to interest gamers beyond those who are interested in these kinds of games where you can create your own level design. It also hurts that the actual platforming is floaty and just not that fun.

Sony is in real need of system-seller titles in my opinion. Microsoft has Halo and Gears of War while Nintendo has even more system-sellers including Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros. and Mario Kart.

Unfortunately, Every exclusive Sony has hyped just hasn't performed well in terms of boosting hardware sales including games such as MGS4 and Resistence 2 as well as multiplatform titles such as GTAIV and DMC4. I expect that Final Fantasy will clearly give the PS3 a signicant boost in hardware sales especially in Japan. However, potential concern is will that boost in hardware sales be short-lived or will it have long legs like some of Nintendo's first-party titles.

A great and creative game, I have it.
The worst bloody on-line servers EVER!!!!!!!
I could not believe that a game that relies on sharing levels and playing together can have such bad servers.

they only have themselves to blame, instead of spending money advertising in the cinema, spend the bloody money on the on-line.

Indeed. Whoever was in charge of the creative aspects of the game (aside from jumping issues) deserves an award while the folks who were in charge of the online implementation deserve a series of swift kicks to the crotch.

It pisses me off to see these horrible user-made levels permanently populating the front page (and thus getting tons of plays) while excellent levels barely get 1% of the exposure. It ain't right, man. It just ain't right.

I would've bought a copy if it had been on the 360. Seriously, if a sequel is still on the way, stop shooting yourselves on the foot and make it multiplatform. It's way too niche a game to limit yourself to one console.

And get a better marketing team on the project. Commercials did a poor job of selling itself, which is especially important for a brand new IP.

Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't this game passed the one million mark sold worldwide? It may not be orgasmic shattering sales but passing million sold isn't anything to sneeze at.

Also to me, this is the kind of game that will sell well throughout the PS3's lifetime.

I'm actually surprised that so many people are shocked that this game hasn't been the smash hit it was hyped to be. I've got nothing against the game personally I just didn't think that, after seeing all the videos it would be a system seller it was thought to be.

Still though, all things considered the overall numbers really aren't that bad.

Couldn't put it any better myself, it has some interesting segments but controls feel watery. It was the platformer that tried but could not.

Since creating things is not my interest the game falls flat.

The game is good, but I do wish it controlled better, the jump mechanic seems very "loose." I thought I remember hearing that MM was working on a patch that would be available soon after launch to "tighten up the controls." Still waiting to hear if that is in fact the case.

The game has a lot of charm and is very fun to play with friends. But I think the PS3 crowd can't relate to this title, at least in the US. I agree that if it had come out for the Wii it might have sold better because of the Wii's demographic and its "kiddie" appeal. Also, while I love the game I'm not a "creative" person. Yea I can do allright, but I'd rather play other people's creations than make my own, and I'm missing a good portion of the game by not creating my own stuff. But I do find it disheartning that a good orignal IP like this didn't sell as well as it could have.

Yeah this is an excellent game. Sure its not perfect, but the levels are so kool and original, especially the user created stuff. I think the lack of PS3's out there and the price of the system are what are keeping this and many other great games from being 'system sellers'. Oh well hopefully the rumour is true and that Sony will drop the price next year.

Uh...because Sony paid them money to make it exclusive? A small games studio like MM aren't exactly in a position to turn that sort of deal down.

I own a PS3, but not LBP. I was in the beta and the controls were horrid. That fact alone kept me from buying it, but I also don't think I'd ever have the time to make my own levels, which was a point of emphasis in the marketing.

A 2D platformer(in this day and age) and the bulk of the game is in the hands of the users.

Its not that shocking that LBP isn't doing so well, for every 10 stages you download, 8 of them will probably be shit, a game like this just doesn't seem like the kind of title that PS3 owners would buy in droves.

That's a damn shame.

I mean, the detractors will complain about the "horrible controls" which I find to be adequate, but this game isn't solely about that. I wish people would embrace the game for what it is, and respect that. LBP is not Mario.

And honestly, the beta levels people played don't do the game justice. There are some immensely creative levels right out of the box.

I didn't even talk about co-op. Local co-op on this game is incredible. I had a lot more fun with it than I did Castle Crashers.

Also, the soundtrack rules.

@boxmyth

Who says you ever have to make your own levels? I have fun by playing other people's creations. I haven't even begun to dig into the creation aspect of it.

And like I said, the disc comes with it's own set of fantastically creative levels.

It does make me sad. It's truely an amazing game, something which I haven't seen in years. You know, all these FPS games that sell tons, they're mostly all the same thing, but people like the comfort of it. Like someone said earlier, I think that unlike all the best sellers of the last weeks, LittleBigPlanet will stand the test of time, unlike another sequel of a sequel of a tried and true formulaic game.

I don't see Valve dropping an $80 price tag on Garry's Mod and pushing it as the best thing since sliced bread - why should LBP be any different?

It's a fancy level editor for a game with little or no content.

I don't have anything against the game or the PS3 personally, but the absolute fanlove for this game is really puzzling.

Not true. Timeshift did bad. Fractuce did bad.

It comes down to if people are interested.

LBP isn't that interesting, and it doesn't help that the commercials don't help to create the interest. They literally don't say anything other than "Gets good reviews."

So people should just buy it? Doesn't work like that. Horribly reviewed games still sell like crazy.

Have to create interest. LBP fails to.

Such a shame, but things might pick up later.

LBP is a fine game/game creator, the real problems began when Sony started tearing into level that many gamers put their heart and soul into creating, then stomping their jackboots all over them.

LBP is a bold first step, for wider user created content for consoles (beyond shoot em up and rpg makers). I really think that once many big wigs like Sony get over their fear of users breaching copyright, such games will thrive on console, just as they do on PC. They need a chilled Valve approach and create a good community. So far, there's no chance of this if they moderate levels and piss off users, with no reason or warning.

Now if MM were to produce a mod engine, that lets users create any kind of game on console, that's when things would get really interesting.

Apart from sales picking up later, my kindest advice to Sony, get to work on a PSP version. If we could create and upload/download levels for PSP, and potentially play them via wifi, this could give PSP a big boost.

As a PS3 owner, I never reall cared much about LBP.

I completely agree with viralhunter and TrailerParkJesus. People (the general public) just don't know what this game is or what it does, and the ads don't really give a good impression of the game. The commercials I've seen on TV for LBP make it look like some shitty, childish Wii game.

Sony really needs to start re-thinking their marketing strategies. Their console commercials don't make any sense, and they're just not advertising their game library like they should be. They've been badly marketing their products from the beginning. Sony has a lot of work to do if they want to catch up with the 360's success, if that's even possible now.

If anything, I think the delay/recall messed things up. There were a ton of games coming then and a week's delay put it right next to R2 and Gears 2, and Fable 2 and the less well recieved Spider-man game. I think Dead Space had just come out the week before. It wasn't a time when they could be wishywashy about releasing the game and they did a too-PC recall and quietly shipped the game to stores that Saturday.

@everyone – Awesome discussion guys. You’ve all made perfectly valid points. Let me ask this, though: Do you think that a continual stream of downloadable content will help push up sales or convince others who are on the fence to buy the title? Could new levels, creation items, or costumes help in any way?

I'm not sure where people are getting any of this. I love the controls and wouldn't change them if I had the choice. The gameplay is great and fun, whether alone or with friends. And there is plenty of content on the disk without the level editor. Just playing through the main levels and games makes the game last longer than many games out there. A level editor is just a bonus really.

I've yet to experience any online problems as well, so I can't complain about anything. This is game of the year for me.

"Could new levels, creation items, or costumes help in any way?"

I'd really hope not - unless they're provided for free. The game is fully centered around the idea of sharing user created assets, yet so many great levels are "moderated" in a mentally deficient manner and every bit of DLC with a pricetag is far overpriced.

People are and have created levels and some great ones are no longer around, even though levels created through the game should clearly fall under the fair-use umbrella.

Could it be Blast Works all over again? Nah, it's been out almost half a year and more people have heard of LBP.

By the way, Blast Works happens to be pretty apt for the would-be better selling Wii version of LBP being mentioned here. So.. *BUZZZZ* WRONG!

It has it's share of flaws, too; but the game isn't hindered by 'bad' controls or limited by physics effects and Budcat (or Nintendo for that matter) has yet to pull anyone's levels off of the BWD for 'intellectual theft.' Has that done it much good? Not really... most people still don't seem to look past the sub-par stuff that comes with it. :P

Maybe that's the case with LBP, too... I dunno.
