LittleBigPlanet's Metal Gear Solid Level Pack explored photo

As you may well know, Media Molecule recently dropped some Metal Gear Solid 4 downloadable content for LittleBigPlanet. Unlike the Festive Level Pack, the MGS 4 stuff is packing quite the punch. It has five campaign-style levels and a ton of MGS assets for your own creations. The question is, how well does it play?

I think the MGS 4 content is spectacular and certainly something that Media Molecule needs to do more of. The five campaign levels (and one bonus) are strung together by a good narrative that has Sackboy defeating a Metal Gear, fighting in VR, spraying paintballs, and even being propelled out of turrets. Most importantly, the developers “stickers” are still all over these levels – that same ingenuity in level construction found in the traditional campaign is present in the new content.

Because of the monumental nature of the DLC, we decided that we needed someone special to walk the reader through what it has to offer. That person is our teenage correspondent, Taylor Tiffany.

Hit the break for her thoughts.

About the Metal Gear Solid 4 Level Pack by Taylor Tiffany

OMG, this is sooo crazy. so, this is like totally my 2nd asignment with destructktoid and an i'm really excited. The crew AND MY NEW HUSBAND TO-BE BRAD NICHOLSON!!! <3 <3 told me to play some level in Meida Molecule's Little Big Planet. First, I was like wicked scared because i don't have a PlayStation 3. i asked for one last christmas because AMERICAN IDOL was out for it but my parents said that the PS3 "was only for people who don't like to have fun," and I was like "that's crazy my friend [name redacted at request of legal guardian] plays it all the time. she has this game where you walk around and dance."

anywayz, destrucktoid gave me a ps3 and this really cute teddy bear game to play. then one of the nice people turned on the teddy bear game and set me up to play the metal gear solid levels. i don't know what metal gear solid is, but i really like that one level in Little Big Planet with the devil music and giraffes. whatevs, though.

so, it totally begins with a bunch of explosions and a green truck. you can't move the truck (idk why) and nothing happens except sum dumb text about the war econmy or something. also, a bunch of funny little cardboard cutouts keep popping up. its like that puppet show i went to when I was like six. After about 15 seconds the level ends.

i was thinking this was going 2 b a really aeasy assignment until i got to the second level of the mgs teddy bear stuff. you get to take the teddy bear and walk him through a bunch of blue lines while some weird beeping noise keeps going on in the background. u also get a gun to shoot dumb green things. i really liked the gun but i had to turn the ps3 off for awhile when mommy saw me shooting stuff.

the third level had these spot lights and when you walk into them nothing gud happens. actually, the game makes this funny "exclamation mark sound" and lasers and green balls start flying all over the place. the funny little machine-man at the beginning of the level said i had to use stealth. LOL. he's so silly. anywayz, after i died A BILLION TIMES!!!! i finally got past the strobe lights and i had to do a bunch more silly stuff. like, i had to shoot paintballs at turrets, hop around and collect those big bubbles that give you stickers and fight this huge tank that fired both greenballs and bombs. it was really tough.

the fourth level was really challenging, but i totally liked it. especially the neat jumping segments where you had to point the gun and shoot at the thing you wanted to jump on. there was also this elevator that stopped like every 2 secs in front of a turret. ROLFLOL, y cant it just keep going?

OKAY, so the last level is a boss fight. there's this really big machine and its relaly hard to shoot the weak spots. at the beginning of the level some old man pops up and says stuff. Someone at Destrucktoid told me it was "self-refrential humour" WHATEVS THAT MEANS, RIGHT?!? Crazy ppl.

so, that was all the content i was supposed to play. whenever u beat a level you earn stickers and whatnot that u can use to make ur own levels. i dont no y u would do that if the game already has levels. Ppl r crazy!!!! TTYL.

Score: 12 -- totally rad (this si the gretest thing ever. srlys.)

Nice write up Tiffany, and congrats to you an Brad.

As for the MGS level pack, I can safely say that I had more fun with it than I did with the entire on-disc campaign mode. Take that how you will.

The level pack is short and boring as well as very hard. You don't do anything in level 1, level 2 is a short tutorial and 3 to 5 are basically a series of boss battles. I hope there are more level packs but I would want the next one to be free..

I played through the levels, and was pretty much blown away by the paint gun. It can basically change the entire direction of a level, causing it to focus more on frantic running-and-gunning rather than platforming. The paint gun should have been free and accessible to everybody, though. We need more user levels that use it.

In the first level you use the sticker switch and play as a on rails shooter. Also, there is only one boss fight on the DLC and that is Rex.

While the article was clever, it missed out on the most important aspect of the DLC. The paint gun. It adds a completely new aspect to the game, and effectively lets you create action platformers (a la Contra). For $6, you get a hell of a lot of content, plus the nearly unlimited new possibilities to make some fun shooters.

Guys, I'll talk to Taylor about the Paint Gun, but she's awfully hard to work with. You have no clue.

coffeesash: Try playing through it a second time, and make sure to sticker all the hidden stuff now. For instance, level 2 becomes a completely different level, once you've stickered the Kojima fox at the beginning of the stage.

The girlfriend and I loved this. And for the price, you just can't beat it. Beyond the levels themselves, which were REALLY fun, you get tools that multiply the level creation abilities by two.

I'm glad folks are starting to ease up on LBP. It's a great game that folks seemed to hate on because it was cool, but finally people are getting the idea that it's a fun game that offers endless possibilities. This DLC was the best thing that could have happened for the game.

Destructiod is F@cked up!

I bought this game and love it and they gave it a very poor review (2nd lowest last time I checked on metacritic).

Yet they give this 12/10?

I laid down £5 on this and it lasted me less than 1hr of gameplay. Value for money?

Bah, atleast I like creating levels so can have fun with the new gun in my level designs... BUT... if it was not for that I'd be extremely annoyed!

Destructoid needs to sort out there review system... giving poor value DLC a 12 and giving the game a poor rating (for how good it is) is kinda lame to say the least.... The F@ckers ratd dead space higher (Read: crime of the century).

This article was disappointing. Before someone goes and calls me a fan-boy I want everyone to know that there is a lot of content in this pack, media molecule put a ton of effort into this. It't not all available at the beginning, you have to unlock it. I feel like this content was good, i mean, its only 6 bucks. Is there something wrong with me?

This level pack is quite simply the best LBP levels available. The platforming isn't as rigid and demanding like in later story levels and the paintball gun completely changes LBP. And the last level is beyond A-maaaaaazzzzzzzziiinnnggggg. Then again, I am a MGS fanboy so maybe my opinion is beyond skewed.

Cute, but totally terrible format for conveying information.

As others have pointed out, the paint gun has instantly changed the amount of easily accessible possibilities for levels (Guns, health bars, etc.)

The most brilliant facet is that unlike normal "Expansion" content for multiplayer games, MM decided that anyone can play on any published map. The only time non-pack buyers will be sans paint gun/extra material is when they are designing their own maps. This takes the emphasis of "pay to continue playing" and changes it to "drop a little cash to gain a birth of game altering creation tools"

Everyone wins with this deal. I just hope further down packs can continue to offer game altering tools.
