LittleBigPlanet has no JPG support? Requires PlayStation Eye for image capture photo

Looks like Sony has found a smart little way to hawk its PlayStation Eye product to budding game builders who might want personally captured images in LittleBigPlanet. It seems that using Sony's peripheral is the only way to get custom imagery into the game, so you better save up some extra pennies.

The news was caught hidden away in a comment made by PlayStation Blog writer Chuck Lacson. When one pussy stroking gamer asked if he'd be able to import pictures of his cat, Lacson answered with: "Yes (If you have a PS Eye, that is.)"

This is a great idea for Sony, since it's guaranteed to shift some extra PS Eyes, but is it a good idea for gamers? Cost aside, I can't see using the Eye as a particularly convenient way of uploading images when you could have some high quality files exported directly onto the HD. Looks like some pretty blatant peripheral flogging to me, and not the good kind either.

no matter, I'll still be creating many levels with silly amounts of innuendo in them.
Besides, why would I want a picture of my fucking cat in the game?

Not that I have a problem with Sony, but if this shit doesn't get lambasted by a majority of the people who post in here, I'm going to lose what little faith I have left in gamers.

It's like they WANT us to take pictures of our penises and make Sackboy jump across them. Disgusting.

...

How are you supposed to capture high quality textures with the PSEye? At very least, the game is going to need photoshop built in to compensate.

Is that confirmed? maybe he was just implying that you'd need to take a picture of the cat first

Well what type of file does the PSE EYE camera use as it has to save them somewhere on the HDD....

So, on that note, wouldn't you be able to find where your pictures are saved, find your own "custom" pics convert them, load them up on the hdd then go into the game to use them?

Maybe...just maybe....

The PSEYE is great. I use it for poker and various video chatting sessions with other D-toiders. That and the built in microphones mean that you don't have to recharge a stupid bluetooth headset to talk every five mins.

Its definitely worth the money.

I like the way you think. I'd be surprised if someone wasn't able to figure that out.

I learned from gamespot's preview that there is a limitation on the amount of stuff you could upload to LBP so I think this could be some kind of way to upload as many standard quality pics as possible.

though I was kinda hoping for a JPEG uploading feature. but its alright Id rather use pics of my penis than some strangers.

On a side note, how good is the picture quality of the PSeye?

No importing whatsoever? I call that bullshit...hopefully...please!

Otherwise, fuck you, again, Sony.

Hmm... I don't like this. I don't like this at all.

However, I'm gonna wait 'til we get an actual press statement about this. "Yes (If you have a PS Eye, that is)" could easily mean that you'd have to take a picture of the cat, and that we should pay money for the camera to do it. He didn't say we absolutely can't import pictures.

If it's true, though, then that's garbage. The PS3 offers a ton of freedom, and that's why it's so nice. This would be the opposite of what we've seen so many times before.

lol, this will be easily hacked by game hackers. Changing image format is the easiest shit to do, and its not like they are going to invent a new image format just for this game.

Little big planet will probably provide tons of fun even without the level create aspect, and now you are bithching and moaning about this. Sure, a jpeg import would be dandy, but you are blowing things out of proportion:

First, you don't need to have custom textures to create cool levels. Trackmania does not let texture import but last time I heard there are lots of good user created levels, without penis photos in them.

Second, they might not have made it possible for users to use custom pics, *at all*, and everybody would still be happy, using game's built in stuff. But now the cat is out of the bag, and you just can't please everyone. You must admit allowing custom photos is quite a bold move, an actual hairy dick photo is probably worse than a fallic shape made of fluffs or wood.

This looks like hyper-sensitive blogging to me. This is barely worth reporting. Just an off-hand remark.

Wait for a press release before you go crazy over this, everyone. And yeah, if in the extreme case this is something to care about, it will be hacked.

@ry mc: it could be made to be very, very hard to hack if they encrypt the contents using custom algorhythms and custom keys.

@others
And one more thing.. Do you seriously think you will be able to use your 7.2 megapixel images for textures? It would be scaled down anyway, I'm guessing 512*512 for the textures, because you should be able to plaster many different ones aroudn.. The pseye resolution will just do..

And if you import anything that looks like a penis, you'll have to enter a 12 digit cock block code too
EVERY TIME YOU BOOT THE GAME UP

Thank you for being reasonable and saying what should be said to try and make people less angry and stressed about a media that's primarily about fun, leisure and relaxation.

@everyone else

Thank you for STICKING IT TO THE MAN!

I thought stupid peripherals that applied to half a game were gone with Power Glove and Super Scope and stuff, but companies don't seem to get over it. Still beats fragile, unstable console add-ons with bare improvements(looking at you, Genesis) though.

Come to think of it, my Wii needs some gangraping now that I mentioned it.

Was there any mention of being able to import custom photos before? If not then it's not really bad news, just good news for people who own a PS Eye.

Sony has to make money some how, right? I don't understand this. The PSEye isn't even a good camera is it?

Oh man. Just...wow.

Sony, you suck. I don't even have a PS3, but the level of dickery it must take to sell a peripheral for a basic multimedia service like importing images is ridiculous.

Mmmm this seems a little strange.

If the dude who asked the question asked if he could import PHOTOS of his cat, then perhaps Chuck was saying the only way to import PHOTOS, directly from a camera, in to the game is through a Playstation Eye peripheral. And perhaps importing other IMAGES will be supported.

I don't know, just seems like everyone leaped to their own conclusions.

I'd like to get a Playstation Eye down the road for Eye of Judgment, but I'd really rather use high-quality images for this.

Playstation EYE is 640x480

i figured it would be eye only when i saw the low res pics of the PS3, PSP, etc.. at that E3 LBP powerpointesque level.

btw, Wal-Mart is selling Eye Of Judgment which comes w/ the PS Eye for $30 on clearance. Which is a decent deal considering the cam by itself retails for $40.
