After already being revealed by way of Game Informer, Sony has today officially announced LittleBigPlanet 2. The game, developed once again by Media Molecule, will be out this year, given a release window of "Winter 2010" which should see it arrive just in time for the holidays.
The game's first official trailer has also been revealed, making this official confirmation even more official in all its officialism, which is officially an official word, officially. Looks good, and it would be incredibly gauche to bring up the fact that Media Molecule said this game wasn't going to happen, so we're not going to do that.
LittleBigPlanet 2. It is a thing. Upon reflection, it's probably a good thing as well. LBP had oodles of character, but the platforming needed severe tightening. Marry the creativity of the first game with some awesome gameplay and better physics in this sequel and we have a thorough winner on our hands, I reckon.

Meet the rest of the team
I seem to be alone in this, but I thought the platforming was great in LBP.
Also, after seeing the new features they've added, it seems that a new game may actually be necessary to do all the things that they're adding, and not just a DLC pack.
Oh god. I've been playing LBP non-stop recently, and found myself getting pretty frustrated with some of the limitations set by the game... needless to say, this trailer has got me excited.
So am I correct in thinking you can make a massive variety of game type with LBP2, we're talking FPS, RTS, Racers, Platformers, etc etc right?
I cannot wait, although I always start with big ideas and end up spending days making a robot or something. I'm too much of a perfectionist to make LBP levels properly, i get sucked into the tiny detail and NEVER finish a whole level.
The first one was a good game, was not a big fan the floaty jumping but it was a great game anyway, if somehow you can modify the jumping to make it feel more like mario would be great!!
Im raelly looking forward to this & seeing what the LBP community can produce. Also (just a note) can you create levels on-line with other people? Just think about the implications (if this was the case) of this.
@JEDI-BABY: Yeah, online co-op creating was introduced about a year ago in a patch I think, I do know it's there though and yeah :p it's great but it can also frustrate you if some pleb joins you :p
@ Max likes turtles: Are we talking about the potential for underground/indie dev studio's? I mean, if you want to get a foothold in this industry I cannot think of a better way to go. Maybe MM & Sony can offer a reward scheme to those who push the boundaries.
yeh i just couldn't get over the controls in the first game...really killed the whole experience for me. and i'm just not creative enough to make my own levels. hopefully this game will offer something for me - someone that just wants to play a good platforming game in this awesome world/style they've created!
oops. Anyway, As much as I loved the original LBP, I wasn't sold on a sequel. What's the point when you have 2 million levels online? Then this trailer comes along and blows me out of the water. First day buy for sure.
LBP is the only game that I haven't traded/sold in the past 2 or 3 years. I just love the fact that there were trends in the level design. You could stop playing for a month and come back to a brand new game. I can't wait to see what happens with the second game.
Nice. I never picked up the first one, though this kinda game seems like I'll still wanna get it. Communities have a way of making great levels years after the game is hard to find.
I loved Little Big Planet, which makes me an absolute minority here as everybody here seems to HATE it.
So yeah, I'm officially the only person looking forwward to Little Big Planet 2, bar a few people. In my opinion, there are not enough Media Molecule type studios who are eschewing the testerone-heavy violence-laden"hardcore" trend in the video game industry to make some genuinely charming and lovely games.
So no one is going to call them out on their bullshit? That story about "LBP2 isn't happening/counterproductive" was posted less than a year ago. Were they not working on the game at that very moment?
Anyway, this game looks...a lot like the first. I'm still hoping for improved running and jumping physics.
We can't say for sure its bullshit or not, this all could have started as DLC they were making. As you said "this game looks... a lot like the first."
However I and many people so far believe this is a welcomed sequel. All the content being added? All the items, levels, and hours spent on LBP1 are compatible? Basically making a gaming platform to build dream games outside of platformers? I was too a little ticked when I heard that LBP2 was coming out despite their earlier comment.
Being able to create your own "game" looks neat, but I have a feeling it's going to be pretty difficult and time consuming to actually make a good one.

It seems that this is now on my Christmas list.
I didn't like the jump or some of the controls of what I played of the first game, so hopefully they will have improved that.

SOLD!!
Sorry for the double post.
Also, a new version gives me a good excuse to play this game again. It didn't get old, more that other things came out... :/
It's just so awesome
Hmm...

Did you even read the comments above you? The first one is getting nothing but love in here, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

...But fuck, seriously? I can't wait.
Hell, at this rate, I probably will start saving up for one after I buy my HDTV (me = poor college kid).
