LittleBigPlanet 2 DENIED

8:40 AM on 03.25.2010   |   Jim Sterling

LittleBigPlanet 2 DENIED photo

Despite a Sony executive confirming LittleBigPlanet 2 a few days ago, the company has officially denied his words, stating that no LBP sequel has been announced. Of course, it's not a straight denial that the game exists, but for right now, we're to assume it's not happening until further notice.

"As demonstrated recently at GDC, LittleBigPlanet has been shown as an example of how an existing game could benefit from PlayStation Move Motion Controller support," explains a party-pooping Sony rep. "This is not a confirmation of LittleBigPlanet 2, and we do not have any announcements to make about the LittleBigPlanet franchise,"

So, nothing to see here. I will still be surprised if we never see a LittleBigPlanet 2 in the future, though. Sony was so keen on turning that into a flagship franchise, and that didn't really happen. It's not like Sony to ever throw in the towel if at first it doesn't succeed, so I we ought to expect much more from LBP in the coming years.

RACISM! This proves Jim Sterling doesn't know anything about JOURNALISM. How can you use such a politically incorrect header image?

"Sony was so keen on turning that into a flagship franchise, and that didn't really happen."

Really? I mean I know VG Chartz is usually full of BS, but they estimate the first game sold 3.14 million copies. That's pretty solid for a new IP...

Both games are also strong critical successes, how exactly are they not part of a "flagship franchise"?

BlackwtrMerc:

They sold pretty well, yeah, but they never became this big face of Sony was hoping for. I mean, Kratos is still seen as the system's defacto leading man. There were all these plans for possible TV shows and merchandise and stuff, but it never seemed to take off.

@Uziwood Apparently you've never watched Fox News. You'd probably think they were one and the same.

I dunno about kratos, think that's just because of recent hype, but for me the "face of PS3" is either the non-descript Socom guy or Helgast. in fact, yeah gotta be Helgast.

is it Helgast or Helghast?

i dunno, you know who i'm talking about.

As much as I want LBP2 to happen, I hope it's not Sony pulling off another "worst kept secret".

People: YAY LBP2!
Sony: Sorry, no LBP2.
People: Aw.
*three months later*
Sony: Kidding. LBP2!

helghast...

When I think Sony, I don't really think of a particular character... Kratos, Sackboy, Helghast... Solid Snake? SNAAAAAAAAAKEEKAAAAAAAAAAANS.

I believe that Little Big Planet 2 will be released in the secon quarter of 2011. Media Molecule made a statement that before releasing the game they started developing a sequel. Now Media Molecule bought by Sony, they will use it for a meaningful reason. I believe LBP will have huge impact on the visuals of PSN in near future. If not this would be the worst acquisition of Sony.

Sony might release a disc with the latest-and-greatest LBP (including Move support) and a bunch of new Mm-created levels, etc, but with how easily that game updates with patches and picks up new level-creation content I don't see any need for a full-on sequel where everyone's got to buy a whole different game disc.

Actually, Naughty Dog never owned Crash. Universal did. Long story.

There are numerous improvements they could make to LBP. Just because the game has a stage creator, doesn't mean that a sequel isn't needed.

I'd buy LBP I'd they allowed you to tweak gravity or change sackboy's physics a bit. I hate that damn jump.

Won't happen for awhile. Why would you even need a real "sequel"? Because you are eager to find out about the next thrilling chapter in... umm... sackboy's story?

They'll just make a game similar in theme to LBP1, call it LBP2, but try to make it non-overlapping in terms of content so they can still milk LBP1. maybe a LBP version of 3D Dot Games Heroes

@ Deny Everything,

"Won't happen for awhile. Why would you even need a real "sequel"? Because you are eager to find out about the next thrilling chapter in... umm... sackboy's story? "

Why would you even need a real "sequel" to Super Mario? Because you are eager to find out about the next thrilling chapter in... umm.... Mario's Story?

In other words.. I either have no idea what a real "sequel" means, or don't understand why you'd only have to be interested in Sackboys story in order to want one.

This might be premature but the Last Guardian (...griffin?) is memorable, distinct and endearing. Failing that, it's gotta be Snake.

Goddamn, Snake is so cool!

This is saying something incorrect about LBP. 28,000+ concurrent users online, 3,000+ levels created a day, 1.25m levels to play available, and over 3million sales to date not even counting the PSP game and it's not a flagship franchise?

Maybe it doesn't get media coverage, but it gets gamer cred, and isn't that what matters?

It might just be crazy conjecture but if anything I see LBP being slimmed down for the second title. I think they will be eager to try to rope in some of their new targeted younger audience by implementing PS Move heavily and keeping the game experience relatively pure.

Even if this is not the plan, it's probably a good idea.
