LittleBigPlanet 2 already planned, merchandise explosion probably imminent photo

LittleBigPlanet isn't even on (most) store shelves yet, but if you thought Sony would be letting this IP go quietly, then you must be some sort of village idiot. According to a BBC article on British game development, a LittleBigPlanet sequel is already being planned, while the potential for turning LBP into everything from comic books to action figures is being discussed:

LittleBigPlanet has big potential. Right now it is just a game but the firm, with Sony, are in talks to turn it into a franchise that could mean spin offs including comics, cartoons, and action figures as well as a publishing platform itself for other brands' content.

Evans says: "There's been a lot of being in the right place at the right time. When we went to Sony we were a tiny but very experienced team. Sony had to trust in us in terms of the quality of people.

"It was amazing how much they understood what was a new concept; it was quite blue sky."

Even before the game has hit the shops, the team are already at work on a sequel.

Would you buy an LBP comic or an action figure? Would you watch the cartoon, wear the T-shirt, eat the breakfast cereal and -- of course -- play the customizable card game? Would YOU smoke LittleBigPlanet brand cigarettes or slap a Sackboy condom on before slipping between your Media Molecule sheets?

Seriously though, it's interesting to watch Sony jump on this one. It's obvious how important the game is to the PlayStation 3, but will it be the savior that Sony has been looking for? Let me sit back in my LittleBigPlanet-brand office chair and wait to find out.

I've been craving a plush Sackboy forever. Whenever they release one, he will be atop my TV.

I can't wait to see what offensive songs they come up with for the next one.

"slap a Sackboy condom on before slipping between your Media Molecule sheets?" LO-Fuckin'-L

I can see this really taking off though. A film, maybe?

There will be a warehouse full of LBP shit somewhere when this dies down.

I thought the whole point of LittleBigPlanet, its appeal and such, is that is was done by a fairly small, indie kind of developer, and would be a great standalone game.

Oh well, it's just gonna become a merchandising whore.

I don't have a PS3 and I'd still be willing to buy a sackboy.

If I was able to customize my sackboy plush and have it made like I want I'd get one, also I could totally see this getting made into a cutsie CG kids movie. As much as I don't like big business taking over a small one if it was my idea or my company I would be raking in money by merchandising it. Its hard to say no when you see the mounds of money you could be making. I think its a great story of a small company making a potential "console mascot" kind of game.

Am I the only one who thinks that if LBP were on the 360 or the Wii, it wouldn't be getting all this attention?

Action figures surely will be on my shelf.

I haven't played the beta but Sackboy is really cute.

Hell, if this game were on the PC people be saying "welcome to 10 years ago".

Anyways, this is the kind of game that would be a lot better served as a one per generation thing. They gave players the tools, no need to make the tools and levels outdated in any way. Let people be comfortable and let the community flourish, patch it and add a few new features occasionally, but hold off until next gen to do a full fledged sequel. It's a model that has worked pretty well for games like this in the past.

Shirts and stuffies I could see being good and I would buy a stuffy asap but I think Cartoons and comics would be stupid.

Loving the game so far :)

They would do well to make sure everything LBP1 is compatible with LBP2, especially user created content.

Beat LBP with my woman last night, it was really amazing fun!

Strongly agree with Jonathan Holmes and Maxxthepenguin. That's not taking anything away from LittleBigPlanet, which does look like a good game and well-executed idea, just saying that I think the game won't be able to live up to the hype and high ratings it has already received for most consumers.

I'd buy a SackBoy, yeah, but that's about it as far as merchandizing goes...

Also, just my opinion, but with a game that's main draw is community created content I don't see the need for a shit-ton of sequels. Sequels are inevitable and eventually will be justified, but I hope they take their time and make it worth the cash. Unfortunately, I get the feeling Sony is just seeing dollar signs...

Well the game is fucking amazing so if they want to make some scratch on it, more power to them. I mean fucking halo has gone as far as the fucking boardgame version, little action figures (dolls), trophy heads and lets not forget the patented masterchief double dong.

News Flash: POPULAR GAME GETS SEQUEL AND MERCHANDISE. MORE AT 11.

It concerns me just a little to hear a sequel in the works for the very reason that it means somewhere there is an end to the original... and man the servers are not even up yet... or at least not for me! (Europe)

I imagined downloadable content and more costumes etc. but i have a feeling that now if they should ask for ANY money, i am not going to give it, as i myself will be aiming for the next game.

I mean, ok, granted i am stoked they are going to take this to the next level. I spent 2 consecutive days (totally roughly 12-14 hours) laughing it up with a buddy, i love the game and concept, and presentation. But somehow it seems that this little bit of info really squashed it for me....

oh well, on to my level creation....
