But yeah, I don't understand why developers whine so much about the used games market. Most people that buy pre owned games wouldn't buy brand new copies in the first place. Everyone prefers a virgin game disc/box, they just don't always have the money to buy it.
I've finally figured out how to combat the scourge of used games! Just make terrible games like Lionhead and they will sit on the shelf forever, sealed, in pristine condition. After all, the last thing we want is anyone using games.
In short; sick the treehugging whackjobs on them.
Piracy does nothing for anyone except the idiot stealing. He gets his game for free and can brag or whatever douchebags do. When you buy a game used, not only are you funding the developer (as the game had to be purchased in the first place), you're more likely to buy the sequel or next project new. It's common fucking sense.
Second, I'm noticing a trend here with companies going after used games after they've released a game that was a disappointment (Fable III) and, shockingly, is filling up the used bargain bin and driving the price of the game down.
I can't begin to say how much this disheartens me about the industry, that we're becoming THAT wrapped up in making money off of it, that people will go as far as to say used games are worse than piracy.
Can you imagine this same argument over used cars.?It's absolutely no different. How do they think they can get away with this rubbish.
Now they are worrying about the fact that nobody is buying a new console copy because of its more than lack luster reception. They've reached their market demand and any new people are just trying a used copy on the whim. Mostly because they don't want to pay $20 for Fable 3.
Of course, since they are a Microsoft owned studio, I doubt they really have any of these woes that he is claiming.
Make a game better than Fable 3 and maybe less people will trade that in.
In most cases, the used versions of games can cost a mere 5 dollars less than the new copy of said game. So it's not always a case of not having money. It's sometimes a case of being a cheap prick. Not to mention, you can sometimes buy a new copy for even cheaper than a GameStop used price off Amazon.
Depending on the company is who I've decided to buy used and new from to give direct support. Example being, I have planns to try out Final Fantasy XIII eventually. However, I am refusing to buy it new as to not support Square directly for how shitty they have become and how much they keep pushing out remakes of Final Fantasy IV. Same with Activision. I'll give Prototype 2 an eventual try, but because they're assholes I won't buy it new.
Anyway, I meant to tell Mike West not to worry. I won't pirate Fable III, or by it used. I won't buy it on sale or even for full price. Because I heard it sucks!
Hope that helps.
I bought Fable 2/3 Brand New and was sorely disappointed in both, ESPECIALLY 3. I don't see myself buying a new Lionhead game for a long while to come.
Now the series of aborted foetuses that are the Fable games have got a trilogy, make a fucking Kinect Black and White and quit yer bitchin.
Man, you'd think that Fable 2 would be bad enough to scare you away from ever buying Fable 3 new.
Hell if it wasn't for the used games market I never would have given Fable a try in the first place, which in turn did lead to me buying both Fable 2 and 3 new. I never would have bothered with Halo, or Tomb Raider, or Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dynasty Warriors, Tekken, Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Call Of Duty and a whole bunch of other series that I have ended up liking and buying new later.
People who pirate games, when demos are so common now, do not then go and buy the game new. Look at the DS and the R4. People do buy a second hand game because taking a punt on a cheap game isn't too painful if it turns out to suck and when it turns out it doesn't suck they often then do go on to support the series "properly" by buying new in future.
And if your game is a one-off then by the time people are buying it from the second hand bargain bin then it's probably already half a year since shops stocked your title new anyway.
Make another Black & White instead.
That is a true statement - You don't have DRM from services on the PC protecting the developer from trade-ins or second hand sales.
Hence, why developers want everyone to sell their soul to digital distribution...The place where second hand sales go to die.
There is "wear and tear". You're saying COD 2 prices stay constant when COD 3 comes out? Or launch games with no sequel (say Kameo) are the same used price that they used to be?
Requires a legal copy to start? How do pirates crack the game in the first place?
Lets poorer gamers get to play? Check.
It's a way to fight back against unreasonable game company sales strategies? Check (DRM/ Overpricing).
May get players interested in the game before getting the developer money? Wait a minute, used gamers aren't going to buy the same game twice.
I just go for the best of both worlds with steam sales, personally.
