Lil' Tommy Turnipseed: Ban war toys and war games, please! photo

You know what we've never run before? A story about some old, out-of-touch activist who claims that "studies show" videogames are bad for children. We've never written about people like that before, so let's write one on this unique fellow, South Carolina whingebag Tom Turnipseed. He wants the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ban certain games and toys. That's also his real name.

"It’s easier for children to play with war toys than to learn how to read or play the piano," says Turnipseed, inadvertantly making war toys sound really good. "War toys teach children aggression. Aggression needs an outlet, but aggression can be played out in a non-violent manner with peaceful games.

"Children should know what really happens in a war. People are hurt, maimed and killed. War toys, games, television shows and movies using guns seldom show the real effect of what violence does to people. Studies indicate a direct correlation between exposure to media violence, especially interactive video games, and increased childhood aggression...

"Better alternatives to children enjoying shooting at people and blowing up buildings are games that encourage the use of their minds, skills and physical dexterity in activities promoting the sanctity of life and peace."

We really do need to end the whole "studies indicate" bullsh*t. Anybody who invests even a little bit of time into actually researching this issue finds that "studies" show arguments for both sides of the debate, because that's all studies tend to exist for -- backing up the opinion of whoever conducts them. Anyway, "violent" games and toys will never be banned, so Tom Turnipseed's plans are about as ludicrous as his name.

You've said all that needs to even be said about the debate and I couldn't agree more.

This reminds me of the new "Penn and Teller's Bullshit" episode which was about video game violence turning children into killers. They had every other proof lacking psycho on there, they may as well have thrown in this guy too.

Is this guy really asking for a hyper realistic war game, because that would probably be one of the most controversial games in a long time.

The guy makes some good points. War games present an unrealistic depiction of something very real and ugly, and are debatably a form of propaganda. I've heard (stupid) people say they think war would be fun based on their experiences playing war games. War is incredibly ugly and wrong, but war games usually have a conservative bias and portray it as something glorious and fun. The reality of war is children being killed and women being raped, especially when it comes to the current war in Iraq, which was just a racist massacre (aka genocide) against a civilian population. Army of Two is a particularly disgusting example, glorifying the private military, the worst of the worst butchers of children.

kids know what happens in war by telling them so. i don't lie to my nephew, i tell him people get hurt and killed.

why this guys at it, why not ban barbie and pee-in-pants dolls? they make and almost groom little girls to want and make babies. girls have dolls for their maternal instinct, boys have guns and swords/lightsabers for their aggressive instinct. you can't deny instinct and we always need an outlet for such. these kids will just pick up a stick, why not ban wooden sticks while we're at it as well? then the kids will pick up stones, then lets ban stones too.

For fucks sake... correlation does not imply cause. First thing we had to learn in statistics for psychology.

Mouse, you really show your bias and ignorance. After reading the story, i was going to post something more or less like what Qraze said and i think he is right on. My nephew who is 3, has literally never been exposed to violence. My sister and her husband are religious and dont let their kids watch tv much at all, if any. For some reason though, he will stomp on bugs in the yard and my niece will try to stop him. If she breaks the dolls out, he bends one in half and uses it to shoot the other. Watching this behavior really got my thinking. She plays house, he crashes cars together, she paints, he kicks down the lego towers i build. He squishes ant, she puts sand on top of their hills to help them build it. Hes not a bad kid by any means but that is just what he thinks is fun. While war is never fun, we are still doing what we did as kids when we play games. We can separate a game from actually going out and killing somebody and taking pleasure in it, just as a little child can play cops and robbers and not want to actually shoot the neighbor kid next door.

People killed people, just like now, children got in to fights, just like now, killed ants, climbed trees, stole their sisters dolls...Nothing has changed.
