Like lamb to the slaughter, 100,000 sign up for Conan beta photo

You know, if we're ever to escape this MMO madness, you people are going to have to stop falling for every mom and pop gimmick that comes out each month. MMOs suck. End of discussion. Why do they suck? Well, it's simple. They all boil down to the same boring rinse and repeat formula. Paint a turd gold, it's still a turd. Why the rant? It seems as if the upcoming Conan MMO isn't dead on arrival after all. Check out the news:

Eidos and Funcom have announced that over 100,000 gamers registered for the Conan: Hyborian Adventures Beta over the Easter period. Despite a rigorous sign-up process, which included the detailing of personal information and PC technical capabilities, 50,000 gamers registered within the first 24 hours, boding well for the game’s developers.

Grrrr. Stop it. Stop supporting crap. Demand something better for your hard-earned cash. Demand that game companies offer something fresh. By catering to their pockets, you are hurting the industry.

Awesome, first comment goes to me. Summa, FUCK off. Your lil opinions have cost you another reader/ad viewer. While the contents of your article are "news" the article it self an editorial. Your opinions are not news. Get the fuck off your high horse. Good bye Destructoid.

Never played a mmo, don't intend to either. However, if they released one based in the Shadowrun universe that had some serious depth UI'd probably piss my pant with glee.

Also, eigokyoukan. You didn't get the first comment lol

That's quite a few people who want to crush their enemies, see them driven before them, and hear the lamentations of the women. I'm more excited about the hack n' slash game coming out, but just slightly. Conan is a franchise that needs to come back and be done awesomely.

@ eigokyoukan:

This is a blog, not a news site. It's about the writer's opinions on gaming news and culture. Stop sucking.

MMORPG's are great avenues for gaming. It has brought many gamers from around the world together to share the same passion for a particular fantasy world and given them ways to “live” in these worlds like never before.

The problem is for every half-way decent MMO that is out there, 20 horrific ones are also launched……

The MMO realm is over-saturated IMHO. Having personally played SWG, Horizons, Lineage 2, Guild Wars and WoW.....I can say SWG was fun for about 3 months and WoW is a great game....the others just suck....major suckage…..not much uber leetness to choose from out there these days.

eigokyoukan ..... go pwn yourself

Summa....keep up the great work. I have been a long time reader, but just registered to comment today. I'll be getting more involved in this wicked hella pissah community.

I fail to see what the big deal is about 100,000 people signing up for an MMO beta. MMOs cost money - betas are free. Of course lots of people are going to sign up to get something for free that you normally have to pay to receive. Besides, I seem to recall that a ton of people signed up for The Sims Online and that was a resounding failure.

How will you stop people from signing up for a free beta though? Its free. Conan will blow though.

Yeah, when it's free, people will come!! Ever go to a sneak preview? That theater will be packed.

I like World of Warcraft. I play it casually. I personally think there is more to do in a game like WoW than there is in a game like Crackdown (which I know is one of your favorites). I mean hell, WoW has lasted me about two years and crackdown lasted about a week.

Hey Summa, did I miss the post where you got a large amount of play time on this game? Why hate on it when you haven't played it? I'm not MMO fan, but I try to withhold hate until I've spent a good amount of time with a game. Maybe thats just me.

They just want what is best in life.

There are some good MMOs out there, but the problem is that 90% of MMOs suck ass. And the thing is, we can "vote with our wallets" as much as we want, there's still enough of a market in Korea alone to make ANY grindfest MMO profitable.

Summa: For once I agree with you.

Stop supporting bullshit, kids.

I'm looking at you, WoW players.

While I don't see eye-to-eye with a lot of Summa's statements, I can't deny that I really don't like MMOs, so props to Summa for coming out and saying it. (Now, RPGs about MMOs, like .hack, I have a strange affection for.) How come no MMO player considers what they're doing to be boring work?

I signed up. I agree Most MMOs are bullshit. And I already beat WoW. But I believe that there is one MMO out there that will be fun, and between this and Gods and Heroes, this is what we have left. I'll probably get bored quick as I did with EVE/Matrix/LoTR/Galaxies/CoH. But hope springs eternal.

Being that I've played MMOs in some form or fashion since the original EQ, I've seen a lot of these MMO franchises come and go. I still play World of Warcraft on and off, but I do not play it as much as I used to. I do have eyes on Pirates of the Burning Sea, but I will wait until the retail product is released before giving my final judgement. Age of Conan is believe it or not, highly anticipated amongst some people ... not more so amoungst the readers of DToid.

In conclusion to eigokyoukan: One bad cock that has a shit-ton of STDs will spoil the whole bunch of cocks, and DToid is better for him leaving.

I signed up for this... I agree though, MMOs really suck, I have yet to see one significantly break the formula enough to justify the purchase. Half an hour of LOTOR and I haven't played the game since.

Signed up for Conan because it was free, I wanted to see how it would run on Vista, see the graphics first hand, and see if the gameplay dynamics had changed significantly enough to make it a worthwhile purchase... so far the only thing that somewhat interests me is the user created cities idea.

What would really tickle my whistle would be an expansive MMO with fully functioning political systems, and paths that don't force you to fight i.e. you can purely be in the political administration, or business world if you choose to. The potential for inter-community conflicts would be great, assassinations of leaders, spying, bribery.

Imagine for example if resources were distributed around these maps in limited supply, they can be captured, monopolized, and traded. In political disputes they can be withheld (which would lead to, for example, one colony not being able to produce gunpowder or types of armour). Trade can be disrupted by foreign armies, leading to a situation where new occupations would be created based on changing circumstances (i.e. hiring mercaneries to guard trade routes).

It would be expansive and expensive, but I'd play something like that in an instant, as opposed to spending 100+hours of my life hack/slashing critters to gain levels and fearing ganks.

Finally, somebody agrees that MMO's suck! My brother plays tons of them but never for more than 1 or 2 months because they all suck. The basic formula for making an MMO is to take all of the things good about RPG's and make them boring and shitty. The quests have no variety, the graphics are always worse than the latest single player games, the story is completely pointless (how can you immerse yourself in a world of fantasy when the second word out of everyone's mouth is lol?) and the AI just sees and attacks. It never does anything differently. There can be no 'emergent' or free -roaming gameplay in an MMO either because the game-engine is so restrictive it won't allow it. They suck as games!

Their only 'redeeming' quality is that you can play with thousands of people you would probably never want to be associated with if you actually met them. I am not sure about everyone else here, but my experienced with social interaction in MMO's have been almost exclusively negative. I never want to play one again in my life.

You know what I'd like to see? More RPG's with regular, non-massive multiplayer. Not just your Champions of Norrath style dungeon crawls, but deep story driven games.

You need to realise that MMO players are no longer people, and it is pointless trying to appeal to their better nature - they all sold it to Blizzard for 8.99/month
