Life With PlayStation is finally ready for consumption photo

It might not be Home, but the delayed news and weather service, Life With PlayStation, finally came out and is ready to enjoy on your PS3. The service briefly popped up on PS3s yesterday before pulling a Houdini and mysteriously disappearing, but it's back up and running now and should be a neat little toy for a few minutes.

Through network connected PS3, it delivers worldwide news and information centering on two themes, "place" and "time" on a world map interface. Some of the live content includes; cloud imagery (provided by University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center), along with weather information (provided by The Weather Channel), news headlines (provided by Google News(TM)), and live camera images (partially provided by The Earth Television Network) of nearly 60 cities around the globe.

Through LIVE CHANNEL, PS3 users will be able to enjoy worldwide news and live information free of charge. In addition to LIVE CHANNEL, Life with PlayStation will continually deliver a wide variety of interactive content and channels to living rooms through network connected PS3s to further enhance the world of entertainment made possible by PS3.

Life With PlayStation also works with the Folding@Home project and doesn't cost you one thin dime. So hey, go switch your PlayStation 3 on, for this is a joyous day -- Sony has finished one of its projects!

Life With PlayStation(R) Comes to PLAYSTATION(R)3 on September 18, Worldwide

Proposing a New Life Style with PLAYSTATION 3

TOKYO, Sept. 18 — Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced that it would release Life with PlayStation(R) for PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(R)) today, September 18, 2008, worldwide simultaneously. Life with PlayStation is a new lifestyle service that offers users a new visual and interactive way to use their PS3 to access news and information from around the world, only possible on the PS3's feature-rich platform.

As the initial content, LIVE CHANNEL will be released for Life with PlayStation.

PS3 users can easily join Life with PlayStation by simply clicking the Folding@home*1 icon on the network column of XMB(TM) (XrossMediaBar) that will update to Life with PlayStation.

With the latest update, Folding@home will support more advanced simulation of protein fold, and will also support PS3's unique Folding@home ranking system, which enables users to see where they stand among the worldwide contributors based on their level of contribution. SCE will vigorously promote the expansion of the world of PS3 by introducing new services that will open up new possibilities and enjoyment in interactive entertainment.

*1 Folding@home is a distributed computing*2 project run by Stanford University which aims to understand protein folding and misfolding, and how these are related to diseases and many forms of cancer. PS3 provides approximately 74% (as of February 2008) of the computing power in Folding@home and over 1 million PS3 users has participated in this project.

*2 Distributed computing is an approach adopted by universities and research laboratories to utilize immense computing power without the use of central supercomputers. Small computing tasks are assigned to each user's computer and the results are collected after computation is complete.

What's with the negative comments. I have an idea....DON'T USE IT THEN!!!!

Sometimes it's handy to just jump out and check these things while using your PS3, instead of having it, and a laptop/desktop running. They aren't forcing you to use it and it's free.....stop complaining.

Thanks for offering more FREE functions for the PS3 Sony....I, for one, appreciate it.

When I'm home, I use my PS3 web browser for basically everything. I'm sure I'll get great use out of this. Funny how just yesterday in one of the stories I was complaining about how this hadn't released yet :P.

fucking haters will hate what they DON'T have. my ps3 due to linux has now covered every generation of gaming from atari to nes to snes to gba to ps1 to ps2. and i play them all and my machine ain't never turned off unless i'm not home or sleeping. i think this is good idea to cover more then just gaming and applaud sony for trying new things. if i can do everything plus more i didn't expect to do then i'm a happy gamer and guess what? i'm a happy gamer. once lbp comes out the limits to what we can do are gonna only be marred by our imagination and thats possible the best thing to marred by.

And you could have bought a PC and used the exact same emulators that do your " from atari to nes to snes to gba to ps1 to ps2." thing.

and run linux at 6 times the speed and acutly have more than 256 main system ram to Acutly DO something worth while with linux since it is not running the cheep slow ass console hardware.

Oh and I do got a Ps3 look my up my psn account is cubcial,

hell you might as well add my wii and xbox crap accounts too.

Oh By the way the wii globe weather and news channel is easyer to use and gives more info than this new crappy life with playsation interface.

where is the patch that makes it useable and useful?

Well it must be new because they did not copy nintendo enough to make it work as good as there spiny news and weather globes.

the amount of newness sony has shown makes it's posterior simply superior! I have never seen anything liek it! ..... except on wii and Google earth like 3 years ago.

i turned my net off at house....but after doing the swap memory on linux so i can use my 2 gig flash drive its much much better and faster plus its got a badass dvd to divx converter so i've been slowly adding more videos to my harddrive, all without voiding anything or ripping apart my machine but i installed linux so i wouldn't have to get a new pc and its on my tv so i can lay down and get into it where when i play something at a desk it just don't fit in my comfort zone and my ds3 is a controller that makes everything for me so much realer, i can't stand using keyboards and mice either to plat with.
don't get me wrong, i love video games and all systems but as of now can't afford any others right now but i'll eventually have a 360 and a wii just not right now, i'm not greedy and have alot of games i can play now that i may have missed when i was younger.
i'm not gonna download this update to the flash drive to see it so i hope by the time i get my shit up and running again it'll be all fixed (life with poopst..er.playstation).............
