Of all the times I’ve played the Grand Theft Auto series, it never once crossed my mind how easy it was to get out of jail. Just give up some of your money and all your weapons and you’re a free man once again.

This video from Atom.com points out the unique justice system from GTA and it made me realize that I would prefer a little mini-game over just getting a slap on the wrist in the GTA games. I avoid getting sent to jail as it is (I’ve reloaded save files just so I could avoid getting jailed off my stats) but I wouldn’t mind it if it involved some Splinter Cell style jail breakout.

Granted, that would get really annoying after awhile if you kept getting arrested.

They just want you back in the game as soon as possible. Yeah, you fucked up and got arrested. You're an idiot. We took away all your weapons. Now get back out there. Anything more than that would be so tedious. Would you want the death to be more involved too? Watch a cut scene of doctors reviving you after you've been shot 47 times, then have to go through a rehabilitation minigame so you'll be able to walk again?

The system they have is perfect. Asking for more realism and punishment is GTA is interesting, but not fun. Hence why the driving in GTA IV is so polarizing.

Oh, also: The mini-game, or actual view of you being in jail could be optional, like in the Elder Scrolls series. It would have worked really well with San Andreas' psuedo-RPG stat elements.

How does it work when he loses a star by grabbing the badge power-up?

Oh I have to watch this when I get home.

I've noticed how easy it is to get out of jail but then again the entire cop vs. robbers element of GTA is extremely flawed then in real life. I mean I can go on a crime spree in the same car and nobody notice my car is the car of the killer. That always bothered me and I always thought it was kind of lazy. I always kind of wished escaping the cops as your stars increased became more of a game of wit and cunning and not just chasing.

A minigame would probably become boring after a while. I was arrested only once or twice while playing GTA IV, so it wasn't that annoying. Although it did feel a little weird when a got shot to death by the army and woke up at the front of the hospital without any impeditive to resuming my criminal activities.

GTA Vice City at least gave us a lawyer to pretend he's always getting us out of trouble. God, I miss that game.

Yeah Vice City was brilliant.

Getting Jailed in Oblivion is different, because so much is possible in that game. You can leave a thousand lockpicks in every cell in the game or simply be invisible all the time so you can never get caught.

GTA4 crime sprees are fun, if every single one ended with a tedious mini-game it would suck. I don't know about anybody else but I never get arrested in GTA4, I would usually die instead.

GTA should allow you the option of breaking out of jail, keeping your weapons and stats, but you're working against a high wanted level on exit of the station.

That's a choice you'd have to make, and consequence is applied immediately. Rad idea.

Really, it never crossed your mind? From the first time I was ever "busted" in GTAIII, I thought it was strange that I was simply let out, despite being a mass murderer.

@Clinton
The first two GTA's made more sense in that respect, as it was bribes that you collected to bring down your wanted level xD

I remember a prison riot in GTA2, it was pretty hard to survive the mayhem. It was part of a mission, which I think is a whole lot better than having to do the same thing several times.

Funny, although they forgot the whole bribing thing. I only ever got wasted in GTA4, which funnily enough, lets you keep your weapons. So "death" is actually the better option.

While I think the minigame idea is overkill, maybe they could increase the bribe amount (enough to dent your funds) depending on wanted level.

I'd also like to see being thrown out of a squad car from GTA2 make a come back. It's at least a bit rougher than peacefully walking out of the station doors.

Or...
You could get caught, locked up, go through the legal system, receive the death penalty, get electrocuted in the chair, survive with newfound powers...and then you start playing inFamous.

Brilliant.
