Levine promises 'huge surprise' with 2K Boston's new game photo

BioShock creator Ken Levine is being elusive about his next game with 2K Boston, eschewing details in favor of hints and nonspecific hype, but promising that a huge surprise is coming our miserable way.

"2K Boston is focused on our next project," he says, "which will probably come as a huge surprise to our audience and yet at the same time will make total sense once they see it. I will say that we're clicking on all cylinders.

"Besides delivering on the narrative experience we're known for, it will include a type of gameplay that is completely new to us -- something the BioShock team has never really explored in depth before. In all areas (art, design, and programming), we spend half our day being totally psyched, and half our day wondering what we've gotten ourselves into. We're kind of humbled by the challenge.

"In the end, our new project is something we're champing at the bit to talk about. But we're not showing it to anybody and won't be for some time. In fact, the only way to get a look at it is to interview for a job with us."

So, we should all apply to work at 2K Boston and then we can see what they're up to. So far, Boston has been very good at keeping this game under wraps, but I can't wait to see what Levine and his team are capable of beyond BioShock.

My question for Mr. Levine is this: It's great that you're clicking on all cylinders, but how many cylinders is that? It just seems to me that if you were clicking on 12 cylinders if would be a significant improvement over clicking on 6 or 8 cylinders.

Yup this confirms it. I have decided to apply for 2K Boston after graduation.

Wasn't there a rumor a while back that these guys were working on a current-gen remake of X-Com? I recall reading something to that effect. Was that whole theory ever debunked?

@BlackFreefall

Me too, the fact that they are in Boston means I won't be too far from home (compared to studios in California and Vancouver). Besides that, working for 2k Boston would just be a dream come true.

*Rubs eyes*

Am I reading this wrong? Because it sure seems like this guy is agreeing with my view of the original Bioshock, that it didnt introduce anything new gameplay wise. Bioshock just pulled a ton of ideas from other sources, and it is just a giant rehash of System Shock 2.

Anyways, I'm excited to see what they have up their sleeves. I wish I could apply with them and then afford to move there. *Sad face*

SephrothX he's saying they're doing something that the 2kBoston/Irrational team has never done before, a different type of game. If you look at their release history they've mostly done 'intelligent' FPS, with Bioshock, System Shock 2, and SWAT.

Also if this isn't X:com I'm gonna be pretty disappointed. X:com's pretty much my most favorite game ever that isn't Deus Ex.

Is that artwork by Scott Sinclair?

He was the art director on Bioshock, (and did really sweet work for Hot Water Music) so I thought it would be topical.

Seriously? What kind of new gameplay haven't we've been exposed to yet? I'd be REALLY fucking surprised that there's another new type of gameplay I haven't experienced yet.

I wish it were X-Com...but Irrational did Freedom Force, which was squad-based tactics, although not turn based. So turn-based squad tactics wouldn't be _completely_ new to them...but maybe Levine's just exaggerating, and it is X-Com. Let's hope it is X-Com. Cuz 2k Boston is probably the one company I'd trust to do an amazing job with X-Com.

Whatever it is, it will be better than Bioshock 2.

X-COM would be completely new to 90% of the current game population and to 2k Boston, Freedom Force played like a Baldur's Gate with super heroes, really, only without the dialog and questing and inventories.
