Let the Modern Warfare 2 UK price war ... BEGIN! photo

MOOOORTAL KOMBAT!

Evil publisher Activision may have whacked an RRP of £55 on Modern Warfare 2, but that hasn't stopped British supermarkets from engaging in brutal price combat as they attempt to undercut each other while selling the biggest game of the year. Some of the prices are absolutely insane.

ASDA will be selling the game for £32, while Sainsbury's has managed the ridiculous price of £26! Tesco has the "cheapest" price of £25, but it only costs that much if you buy Modern Warfare 2 in conjunction with another chart title. At any rate, if you're looking for the best deals around, it seems your local grocery store has the answer.

Supermarkets in the UK are becoming the best place to buy videogames, due to their willingness to sell at a huge loss just to get ahead of the competition. It probably won't have good long-term effects for the market, but hey, enjoy it while you can!

26 big ones? Seriously.

Fuck. I wasn't gonna get it solely due to the price hike, but... That's pretty fucking tempting.

meh, risk not getting a copy at 6am tomorrow, or get a definite yet costly copy at midnight.

No 24 hour asdas or sainsburys round here.

Weaksauce.

I'll be at Sainsbury's close to opening time (7:30am) in anticipation. Will buy two, one for 360 and one Ps3 then decide which to keep. I should be able to either sell one for a profit or trade in towards L4D2.

@ Sexualchocolate ,

You can't possibly need this game bad enough that you can't wait 6 hours to save that much money. There's no risk anywhere.. the risk is in your head.

it was obvious from the announcement of the £55 RRP that nobody would be paying £55, but i didn't think it would come to this.

been watching that £26 since the rumors started, but since i can see it being a total shambles at 8am i'll be checking out asda at 12:01.

i don't actually want it, was going to boycott it because of the price hike (hate Activision) but realised that everyone on my friends list will be playing it and didn't wat to feel left out. i have some stingey friends who don't buy games till way after i've traded them in who i never get to play with!

Had some calls during work and messages saying "Ring me urgently" today, only to be a buddy telling me about this price war. Thought it was some kind of emergency.

So i looked into it and these supermarkets are offering that price on "the first batch of stock" and from what i read that is like 100/200 in most stores. Won't last 5 minutes.

so it's not a case of getting it tomorrow, it's a case of trecking to Sainsburys, finding out they don't have any left, trying the next supermarket etc etc.

Where as Blockbuster have £50 credit sitting in my account, a pre-ordered copy, and a midnight launch, so I can literally turn up, que a little and give them my name, no cash no early morning, no risk of them having run out. But £44.99 (+£5 rental vouchers) so it's only really like £14 cheaper, and will be a fucking ballache to get hold of.

Convincing myself that i wasn't going to get this game then dropping my morals at the last minute has me pretty pumped too.

I do love a midnight launch too, gamers coming together to que in the cold, got a nice big bag of weed last night, big sub in the boot of my car and will turn the Blockbusters que into party central! GTA4 launch was more fun than the game!

Anyone in Leamington Spa tonight, hit up Blockbusters launch and holler "Choco, where are you?" I'll be there.

Supermarket's really are great places to buy games these days: I usually find titles in those often for less than £10 than any Game or Gamestation would dare to sell them for.

That said, my local supermarket is Sainsburys, so I'll be up bright and early to snap a copy if possible tomorrow. My brother's birthday is coming up soon, and I know my parents will probably end up paying full price for it if I dont get one now.

wow good job sainsburys, my xbox broke two days ago (of all the luck) but im gonna be down there so fast so i can have it ready for when it comes back from repair!

i was hoping tesco or asda might do this because they're usually good for this thing, but i wasn't sure since they could charge whatever the hell they want for this game so it might of still been quite high. love u asda

@ sexualchocolate,

"I do love a midnight launch too, gamers coming together to que in the cold, got a nice big bag of weed last night, "

I'm jealous.. I have a nice big bag of weed here too, but nobody will bother coming to the midnight launch with me. Most of my friends thinks it's a waste of time. In fact, the guy I get my stuff from also happens to work at gamestop.. but of course he'll be at work which kind of ruins that. But still.. you're right.. it is nice that something gets a bunch of gamers together.. in my town that's a pretty rare event.

This article is great. But seriously, what is the deal with some of the header immages you use? You always sneak in one or two abstruse and obscure picture in your articles. And it drives me nuts either trying to figure out what in the world the image has to do with the article or wondering where the image came from in the first place...

@somnambulist: They are an accurate and informative graphical representation of the UK. Either that or I assume he's poking fun at places like Asda which are almost always inhabited by welfare-leeching chavs.

Welp hope this helps, gonna head to Tesco after college tomorrow and pick it up I think.

Yes, poor girl for laying down on the bar table with some unopened bottles and cans for a neat photo she can post on facebook the following morning (:

And boycotting is lol.
Is MW2 a good game? Yes.
Do we want good games? Yes.
Does a boycot from you change anything? No.
It's like, yeah, have fun not having fun, while the rest of us will.

Hey cap sorry for your loss, but this...

"wow good job sainsburys, my xbox broke two days ago"

...makes my inner fanboy smile like a motherfucker. I know it's mean, sucks to be you, but I can't help but grin when i read one of those oh-so-common comments.

To say a boycott doesn't work is silly, of course it isn't going to achieve anything but it's the bloody principle of the thing. By buying it we've voted yes to a £55 RRP on AAA games.

Saying that i fucking bought it midnight last night.

I R Weaksauce.

The game is the fucking bollocks though.

I also bought it at midnight. Since I live in West London, there was no cameraderie for me - just a gauntlet of angry-looking yoots to run on my way to and from Blockbuster. I had friends strategically positioned at 24-hour branches of Sainsbury's in two different parts of London, and for both, the story was thesame: hoardes of scumbags, nonexistent queues, police presence called in when things started to look ugly - a lot of you folks assuming that midnight launches are all fun and games are kidding yourselves a bit. And those who thinks it's gonna be easy to pick up a cheapy copy this morning are high on crack - the Ladbroke Grove Sainsbury's opened at 7 this morning and had sold out by 7:10. You might be lucky if you live out in the styx - In addition to Sainsbury's and Asda, I hear Morrisons have it for £25 - and if you can find a Makro (which is not easy), they have it for a score, as stated by Digital Fodder, above.

Anyway, when it became clear that none of my buddies was going to be able to take advantage of the reduced price, I bit the bullet and headed down to Blockie at about 12:30 - the queue had died down to a handful of people, I was in and out within 15 minutes of arriving, then up till around 4am playing the game.

Despite the advice of the developers, I went stright into mulitplayer - this is a MW tradition for me, I did't play the campaign on the first one till about two months after I bought the game. I won't wait that long this time round, but the online mode is why I buy MW, so it made sense to me to give it a thorough check straight away. I'm pleased to report that it's awesome!

I was totally off buying this game originally too... perhaps a little of the boycottishness, but chiefly because I wasn't that enamoured by the idea of the game as much as the hype suggested I should be. However. At that price (£26 Morrison's), I think I can afford to purchase a must-have-don't-really-need game. Bargain. I remember the original plummeted to £25 a couple of weeks after release too. Must say, these CoD games aren't costing me too much :)
