Let Super Smash Bros. Brawl show you its pokemans photo

Okay, I was all ready to tear today's Super Smash Bros. Brawl dojo entry apart, but the more I think about it, the more I actually like the idea. A brand new character has been unveiled, you see, and he's not quite what one would expect. I could just break the news, but let's allow the patronizing, childlike words of the site itself to teach you about him:

No way! The Pokémon Trainer has finally arrived. And it looks like he doesn’t do his fighting directly.

Instead, he uses the three Pokémon with him—Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard—to do the fighting for him.

No way! The Pokémon Trainer has finally arrived? I can't wait! Sarcasm aside, I honestly approve of this idea. It's essentially Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard who you'll be playing as, not the trainer himself. His only real impact is using his special move, a quick switch-out of the current Pokémon to swap for a new one. As well as a shared health meter, the Pokémon will have their own stamina levels, meaning you can't keep them fighting for too long a time and need to switch them at the right moments. Could be quite a strategic character with a focus on maintaining balance. As cynical as one can be about this idea, I am personally sold.

[Thanks to Geoff Mendicino for the tip]

Badass! This is what I've been asking for from the beginning! Good to know Nintendo was listening to those of us who wanted a Pokemon Trainer or at least more Pokemon to play as. Fuckin A.

Why don't they just call the kid Ash? The Pokemon Trainer is a horrible name.

As much as i likely won't be using this character, i think it is pretty cool nonetheless.

Because in the games, he's not Ash. You can name him what ever you want. This is not the character from the show, it the character from the show.

To me, the Pokemon games are a different in quality and style from the Pokemon show as the Mario games are from the Mario show.

The farther the games stay from the show, the better.

the inherent flaw of using Pokemon Trainer is as soon as one of them gets knocked off the stage, its gonna be "IVYSAUR/SQUIRTLE RETURN!" then "GO CHARIZARD"

If this guy were named Ash, then he would be the character from the show, not the game. Other than the clothes, this guy doesn't look like Ash. He is not Ash. Thank god, because Ash sucks. The Pokemon show sucks. I hope the games never assocaite themselves with that garbage.

Sakurai said he'd never put anime characters in Smash Bros, and I think that the rule applies here.

This update has my poke-johnson totally hard.

Where Nex to share in the Poke-porn that is this update?

What will his final smash be? I'm guessing Mewtwo or Mew or something. Or it could be dependent on the particular Pokémon out at the time.

I always hoped there would be a Pokémon game that had real-time fighting instead of turn-based. This is a step closer to it!

I like the idea of the Pokemon Trainer character. But i think they should have made the character Ash, and not just generic pokemon trainer. Tron Knotts points out that you can change the characters name in the Pokemon game but that doesn't mean anything.

In every single Legend of Zelda game, you can change the name of Link. We all know that the character's name is Link, but you can make it whatever you want. If they called Link's character in smash bros. Zelda Hero or something stupid it wouldn't make sense.

Ash is the name that everybody associates with Pokemon as the main character. There are no other generic character types in Smash Bros. I guess you could argue Pikachu and jigglypuff as a nonspecific character but I personally equate those characters to their main pokemon tv show personalities.

I don't know, i guess i just think that using the Ash name and likeness would serve better than just Pokemon Trainer. I mean, he even has the squirtle, ivysaur, charizard trio.

Definitely a neat idea. Sounds like it'll be one of those "for experienced players only" things, problem being that all the little kids will see pokemon and instantly choose him.

No they own everything about pokemon, including ash's likeness, they created ash. They probably just thought it would be better to have the character from red & blue, who is actually known as red. Red is also the character from the manga.

4kids doesn't own anything anymore anyway, Nintendo took all of their properties back and started handling them themselves.

Also, LOL at the Pokerap final smash suggestion.

This character is based off of Red from the original Red and Green Versions. Before the anime, the main character was just named Red, but in the anime, his likeliness was renamed Satoshi, who is the series creator.

Why Squirtle instead of Wartortle? The other two Pokemon have been evolved completely.
Justice's Avatar - Comment posted on 08/13/2007 08:58

No Ivysaur is the first evolution of Bulbasaur and not Venosaur
That's the point here I think, to have a pokemon with each "evolution level", also Blastoise is the final evolution of Squirtle & not Wortortle.

Everybody liked Squirtle (cool glasses) & Charizard anyway so I guess tehy figured Ivysaur was the only option left.

@ Spectral
That's exactly what I was going to say, along with the fact that Satoshi was renamed Ash for the American translation. Seeing as Super Smash Bros. draws from video games, it really doesn't make sense to use Ash. While Ash might be slightly more recognizable as the face of the Pokemon brand, Red is the most prevalent character in the games; as far as I can remember, Ash only appeared in the N64 version of Pokemon Puzzle League, which, along with Pokemon Snap, were the two games based directly on the anime.

I just thought of something: will Red's Pokemon be allowed be allowed to pick up and throw Pokeballs? Even though Pikachu does, it's still kinda weird.

They selected those evolutions to have explicably weak / medium / strong attacks. It wouldn't be very balanced to have three tanks now would it?

This = Fuckawesome.

That's all I can really say about it. Extra Awesomepoints™ will be awarded if the palette swaps are actually different models of the other generation's trainers, but I'm guessing that's a touch unlikely.

I think they should call him Pete - a not-too-clever-but-clever-enough derivation from the letters P and T, for Pokemon Trainer.

Nintendo, if you end up calling this guy Pete, I want $1,000,000 or else I'll see your ass in court.

I agree with free touch! Missingno. for the win! The final smash attack would then cause your game to randomly crash, but would give you 99 free master balls. Worth the pain I think!
