Let boobs flounce free! photo

A recent FileFront editorial treats a topic near and dear to all our hearts -- boobs in video games. However, even though the article's author identifies himself as "someone who enjoys eye candy as much as the next man," he then thrusts the blade of betrayal into our breasts by positing that there's actually something bad about the cutting-edge advancements in breast physics.

Um, dude? What's wrong with you?

The article suggests that the mammiferous undulations of bountiful bosoms cresting corpulent crescendoes in our video games might "set unrealistic expectations for young male gamers when they actually encounter the real thing." Someone might want to point out to this guy that breasts in video games are clothed, at least to some extent, and no more graphic than what we might see at the beach. To suggest that gamers never see clothed breasts is tantamount to the rather insulting stereotype of gamers as people who never go outside -- a sentiment the article supports by referencing "the huge number of game designers who simply never got out of the office enough to interact with real women."

The article continues:

The growing ranks of GRRL gamers out there (well most of them anyway) want interesting stories, social dynamics and good action and so should the guys - it's too bad game developers keep delivering breast physics as an answer.

Why can't we have both? ...And did he just call me a GRRL?

"How can any real female ever hope to live up to the fantastic behavior of these modeled mammaries?" the author wants to know.

Well, buddy, I'm not inviting you to play Wii Sports at my house, so you'll just have to wonder.

GREATEST. TITLE. EVAR.

(you’ve got yourself quite a vocabulary there, Leigh...what, do you teach an SAT prep course or something?)

Of all the double posts to have...the shiny pants image is burned in my brain. I suppose you could've done worse, like "The swollen mass was like a bundle of concentrated energy exploding with delight." That would've sucked worse. Now, back to boobs.

Am I too late for the boobs? I like boobs in general. Most guys like boobs. Many girls like boobs, too. In fact, girls have boobs. Boobs are really everywhere. Why not keep boobs in our games? Boobs sell. Boobs are really just...good... and the author has a problem with boobs. Who has a problem with boobs? Besides the author? Boobs ftw, I say.

LOL HAY GRRL, I hear that around Memphis alot ^^

Characters like Taki and well...practically anyone from DOA are know for that right? A physics engine vs realistic expectations are two different things.

At this point aren't DOA and characters of the like are known for their outstanding physical qualities? Case in point; I don't think that looking at it as a girl to live up to a standard for cosplaying via her cupsize should water down the high-def beach volleyball.

yes! I want realistic breast physics.. not these huge gazongas that pulsate so you don't need a raft if you ever get in a rack.
big tits never did anything for me. i dont want tiny tits, but a handful is enough and all i care.

I have to say something. To me it is not about big boobs or small boobs but the amount of skin shown, or the stretchness of clothes that cover the body (the ones where you can almost see the surface of the body as it would be without clothing(see picture on article for example). In our world of hypersexualization (where im pulled by each side unable to make a choice between hypersexualisation or non objecttification of women), the amount of boobs is almost inversely proportional to the amount of clothing worn. And when I usually say "that's enough" is when you almost see the female body nude (stretch clothing, (very) small amount of clothing). Why can't it be shown with a decent amount of clothing like Alix in Half-Life 2. She does not need to be in bikini for people to like her, if she had bigger boobs, at least she would not look like a slut. And I think it is evading the problem not talking about why do the developers put big boobs in games. Because, again in our world of hypersexualization, it sells. It is not for the story, not for gameplay (I do not see in what way big boobs colliding with objects could be used to enhance gameplay in any game except a porn one).

In conclusion my point is that I like big boobs but i do not understand why they have to put clothing way too suggestive where you can almost feel she's nude (see picture on top of the article for a good example). And I am sure that a big boobed girl with more decent (not considering today's standards because they are way too flawed. And I must add that again it is not because i do not like big boobs but i do not understand why do (almost) every developer make create big boobed girls, and like violence when there is overflowing gore everywhere like these days, the gore in movies becomes normality ( see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_(behavior) , normal being not deviating from the average, and to me, the average "behaviour" being "almost every game targeted at young males contains a/many big boobed girl(s)")).

i think you may not understand my post (I've never been able to convey my ideas clearly so people would understand them, well, clearly... and my post is quite dense) but i thought I touched something that had not been mentioned before. Flame me if you want... i dont care DX .

and, sorry to add yet another post...

but while many of you consider it not real, so non "damaging", for lack of a better word, to the mind of the viewer (as I understand it from your points of view), is only a way to discard the the damage done by objectification, being the thinking, unconsciously, of the female body, with no meaning behind the image.

For example, if i watch hostel, which i did, while i did not hate the movie as such, it does not try to pass some kind of message to the audience (or if it did i am sorry but it is really hard to find just by watching the movie), and it is what is transpired by today's society, a lack of meaning, and a futile search to fill our life with even more empty objects, ways of thinking, etc. What I am saying is that making a game with big boobs does not make a game better (if it does to you, it is because you are a BIG pervert, which would be quite sad, honestly, because what happens to pervert?? they fall into CP! So be careful to not become a sick pervert). But I digress.

Unfortunately this "story" (or article, which is a more fitting word to me) shows the way our society works at the turn of/during the first 7 years into the new millennium, Me seeing it as an emptiness or lack of meaning, while our world suffers many a woe, more pressing than physics on boobs.

(no link with previous talk)And, as I see it if you try to add physics to boobs, it is because you are trying(i would hope so)to add more realism and BIG boobs are, I do not think, I do not think the only kind of boobs that need physics, even small boobs obey the laws of physic.

anyway I think i'm thinking too much and being a bother, so I wll stop NOW.

Leigh, you really don't feel like "the man" has ever tried to keep you down, make you feel like all you are good for is porkin, makin' babies, and getting slapped around?

Maybe the world is slowly becoming a better place.

Leigh- This is what I'm geting from what you are say "Men have discriminated against me because I am a woman, but I refuse to do the same back. And it's fun to be a girl, and to look at girls."

For that, I love you.

You are an evolved human being.

And I can't wait for your next San Andreas story.

Leigh, you are ten kinds of awesome. You are probably the first female gamer I've seen, aside from my own wife, to make assertions like these. You rock.

Personally, I have made no illusions here at Destructoid about the fact that I'm a world-class pervert. You get these articles about the latest sexual "hot-button" in the gaming world (such as the recent diatribe on Ivy's breasticluar enhancements for Soul Calibur IV), and I'm in there going, "MOAR!" I'm a perv, what can I say? I enjoy looking at this stuff. Hell, the reason this article caught my eye was because I play Taki primarily in Soul Calibur. Guess why I was drawn to her? No, srsly.

Anyway, my wife is also fairly large in the mammary division (44 DD) and she's proud of every natural bit, even if they are inconvenient sometimes. She gets the stares, the guys poking their friends in the ribs to "check out the rack on that chick". She doesn't mind. In fact we both believe if guys didn't stare it would be kind of weird. Like, what kind of society would we have to be living in for the majority of men to not appreciate a great pair?

She, like you, can appreciate a beautifully rendered video game girl, and enjoys realistic breast physics on boobies big and small.

But, overall, the main thing we agree on is that nobody should be making a big deal about objectifying women in video games. Why? Because they ARE OBJECTS. They aren't real! Not only that, but in some of those same games with the giant jubblies you have heads exploding, people being cut in half, or other incredibly violent and unrealistic acts. I don't see anyone going, "Well it's going to create the unrealistic expectation that one man can take down an army of ten thousand aliens with a gun that never seems to run out of ammo..."

Video games are about imagination. We mostly imagine up unrealistic and fantastic things... like an entire island populated only by cute, large breasted and scantily clad volleyball players/world class martial artists. I'm sure the hipocrites who write articles like these would be pleased as punch if, say, Kasumi was replaced with a loppy-breasted girl that looked like she was beaten with an ugly stick. "What a triumph for fairness and realistic expectations!" You go with that, buddy.

On a side note, this guy says sex has sold since the 80's? Yeah, try like 200,000 years ago. Since the dawn of man and woman, yo.

Great article Leigh. I've really gained a huge respect for you through your work.

I think people need to stop trying to dissect the effect of every little thing in video games and just let the developers be creative. After all most people play games to relax.

Leigh is a great writer, allot of Kudos to you. You can grab any article, even boobies articles and actually turn it into a very intellectual conversation/argument.

Now getting back into the subject, we should have a Taki vs Ivy thread. To me Taki has been my favorite since Soul Edge, Ivy's boobs have grown too dam much, she was a low cup B now a double size D. wtf? and if you noticed, in Soul Edge she looked like she was 40, and each passing sequel she's been getting younger and bigger boobs? dam those Mcdonald whoppers...

Awhile back, when I first got into gaming, just knowing the identity of some space bounty hunter, sent my imagination reeling. If she were real, what would she be like? I know its odd to hear someone admit, "hey Samus has been my lifelong crush". Who wasnt into her for the longest time?

Looking at now, how much character "design" has changed. Going from creative, to another level. When you glance over at fighting games, one name might come to mind, Chun Li, the 2nd would be Mai. Why? One kept their values, the 2nd let go, and just wants to have fun. Maybe its this generation gap, or showing how immature we really are inside.

The most stirking moment I've had? when i glanced @ Capcom VS SNK, and saw Mai's attire literally flow along with her movement. Awhile back many were astonished with 3D graphics and some lady named Lara. Go foward, yet still 2D, and Mai drops jaws. Its one of those moments that leaves you blank, and just not really understand why, its just a game, have fun, let it be entertaining. And well now we have all these lead femme fatales', and see where it goes.

I question though if its just the artists' own decision to draw the leading ladies in such a way, or is it by the design teams' own vote. "Do we sex it up? or keep the same routine?" I have wondered what it must be like at those creative team meetings. Is it conceptual, or a discussion over some sake' that one night before.

I am curious what other female gamers we have in this community. What do they think about how videogames have changed over the years. Are you alright with it? or 50/50?
just curious.
