Less spending on games this holiday season, says NPD photo

Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst of the NPD Group said, “I think consumers will be looking for the right gift, rather than the most extravagant or expensive one."

That means that you might not be getting games.

According to the NPD, 30 percent intend to spend less than they did last year. That's probably that recession talking. The plan-to-buy figures haven't changed much from last year, but one difference is videogames, as only 20 percent of those surveyed plan to buy games this year.

You wouldn't even need to get that specific to guess that high-ticket items like games and game systems aren't going to be as popular as they were last year. In fact, the same NPD study said that almost 50 percent of those polled said that the state of the economy would have a significant effect on their gift buying this year.

You know what that means, right? Socks. You're getting socks. The black tube socks you'll never wear.

It has nothing to do with charging a premium for games these days, right?? Actually, I'm impressed that Uncharted 2 is going for $60 CDN as opposed to the now standard $70.

Hmmmm... not at our house. My nephew will be getting a game, my niece will be getting scribblenaughts, my Mom is getting a DS and I've already bought a bunch of crossword puzzle games for her. My own list includes 4 - 6 games I'll be getting (probably some before/during/after). My husband will be getting a game (and a new red PS3 controller) and we're buying my sister-in-law a PS3 and a copy of Little Big Planet.

See, I don't get that. Relatively speaking, games aren't any more expensive now than they were in the 1990's. Actually, compared to console gaming, things are a lot cheaper.

Console gaming? Cartridge gaming.

Why do I even bother when Niero wins the Internet.

Games have always been around the 60 dollar mark, hell I think I paid 50 for my copy of SSBB for the 64 back in the day. They remained around that price and then jumped up to 60. People will spend less because they have less. A 10 year old could tell you as much. It's pretty hard not to understand that everyone is poor, especially thanks to the media.

Regardless, it won't stop me from bugging family members for AC2 and whatever else didn't get delayed.

You got SSBB on N64? Holy shit. That's got to be the Holy Grail of gaming.

I don't get games for the holidays anyway so this doesn't bother me. Sucks for pretty much everybody else here though.

@ Krow

And that is another reason why my Dreamcast and GameCube collections completely dwarf the number of SNES games I have ;)

When I bought my PS3 back in the summer of 2008, I don't ever remember seeing a single game at $70. Now I feel grateful when a new game releases at $60. I feel dirty for the way the industry has made me think. I'm still buying tons of games, but only 3 this year have been disc-based so far compared to about a dozen off of PSN. Companies can charge $70 for their games, I'm just not going to buy them though.

Also, Neiro that terrifies me haha.

I know there's been a cap for me. Mainly because they're charging so damn much. If a top notch publisher published a few blockbuster titles for $50 it could convince the industry to think twice about the current standard. Sadly that will never happen.

The recession is only compounding the real issue: the dearth of high-caliber titles for the last 6 months or so. Even if things pick up a bit this holiday season it won't be as much as if more of the bigger titles hadn't been moved to early next year. It would seem to me gamers are going to buy what they want and are willing to sacrifice other things first if funds are tight.

A lot of people want to buy a Wii! Not me, though, I'm saving up for whatever version of the DS is available in 2010.
