Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst of the NPD Group said, “I think consumers will be looking for the right gift, rather than the most extravagant or expensive one."
That means that you might not be getting games.
According to the NPD, 30 percent intend to spend less than they did last year. That's probably that recession talking. The plan-to-buy figures haven't changed much from last year, but one difference is videogames, as only 20 percent of those surveyed plan to buy games this year.
You wouldn't even need to get that specific to guess that high-ticket items like games and game systems aren't going to be as popular as they were last year. In fact, the same NPD study said that almost 50 percent of those polled said that the state of the economy would have a significant effect on their gift buying this year.
You know what that means, right? Socks. You're getting socks. The black tube socks you'll never wear.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
See, I don't get that. Relatively speaking, games aren't any more expensive now than they were in the 1990's. Actually, compared to console gaming, things are a lot cheaper.
Why do I even bother when Niero wins the Internet.
Regardless, it won't stop me from bugging family members for AC2 and whatever else didn't get delayed.
I don't get games for the holidays anyway so this doesn't bother me. Sucks for pretty much everybody else here though.
And that is another reason why my Dreamcast and GameCube collections completely dwarf the number of SNES games I have ;)
When I bought my PS3 back in the summer of 2008, I don't ever remember seeing a single game at $70. Now I feel grateful when a new game releases at $60. I feel dirty for the way the industry has made me think. I'm still buying tons of games, but only 3 this year have been disc-based so far compared to about a dozen off of PSN. Companies can charge $70 for their games, I'm just not going to buy them though.
Also, Neiro that terrifies me haha.
